Monday Matchup

By HistoryGuy, in X-Wing

I had an idea a while back to post a couple ships and then debate it out. Then Friday Fights started so I organized with him and Monday Matchups was created.

I've been teaching my little brother to play X-Wing and he loves the TIE Advanced. So I picked the closest Rebel ship to match it. The X-Wing is almost exactly the same with a few differences. If you had to pick one with no upgrade (see below), which one would you pick and why?

Red Squadron Pilot

PS: 4

Actions: Focus/Target Lock

ATK: 3

DEF: 2

HUL: 3

SLD: 2

Astromech: none

Torpedo: none

COST: 23

VS.

TIE Advanced: Storm Squadron Pilot (Initiative)

PS: 4

Actions: Focus/Target Lock/Barrel Roll/Evade

ATK: 2

DEF: 3

HUL: 3

SLD: 2

Missile: none

COST: 23

Does the tie advanced have access to the title? If not. The x-wing. If so then the advanced.

For this one, no. Just what you see there. That may be a future match.

Time limit? Obstacles? Play area size? All of these are important considerations.

But I think the most important factor is who gets initiative, which I see you have given to the Imperials, probably following the basic game rules.

If the Rebels get initiative, the TIE Advanced can arc-dodge more effectively because it's moving after the X-Wing. It doesn't matter if you're shooting second if you're not letting the first ship get any shots at you.

If the Imperials get it, the TIE Advanced has to anticipate the X-Wing's movements, and there's no real advantage to shooting first because of the simultaneous fire rule. It's a more evenly matched battle in that case.

So it's actually a matchup that depends very much a single coin flip (or arbitrarily giving it to the Imperials as the basic rules do). On the chance of being able to arc-dodge, I suppose I'd take the TIE Advanced.

Red Vet should win that most of the time.

Yeah. For this first one I did follow that basic rule from the book for this first one. This first one is just to see how this goes and make tweaks for future ones.

For this matchup, I was mostly thinking ship to ship on purely stats and maneuver dial.

It's hard to judge them in a vacuum (haha). If you're playing a standard match with 6 obstacles, 3x3 play mat, 75 minute time limit, I think the TIE Advanced has that one because it will be able to fly circles around the X-Wing, but it's going to take a long time and it won't be much fun for either player.

How do you upload pictures?

I use imgur.com and then link it from the photo icon in the tools above your post. It has to be an external source, and there are others, but imgur.com seems to be the most friendly with a lot of options on sizing before linking it.

Plain Adv is straight garbage. My money's on the X-Wing.
