I love this game. I truly do. But the quality of components is terrible. I'm thinking about doing something to improve it. But even if I paint them and create a small base for every one the main issue is their size. If they went with size (and quality) as in Xcom I'd buy this in an instance instead of playing a used copy of my friend.

Has anyone moded the ships somehow? Any ideas?

My brother used his 3D printer to make bigger Cylon ships. There are templates out there (though I'm sure an handy 3D printer will be harder to come by than the template file).

Why do you think the quality is bad? For me it is quite nice and I'm very satisfied with the game.

I couldn't disagree more. I think the ships are well done and match the scale of the Galactica on the game board (with the exception of the Base Stars, which simply couldn't be done given that they're so much bigger than BSG).

It does not look bad compared to other objects.
