First Store Championship: Did Alright, Had Lots of Fun!

By That One Guy, in X-Wing

So I took a list that would be more fun than cutthroat competitive.

Rexler Brath + HLC + Predator + TIE Mk. II

Black Squadron TIE + Predator

Black Squadron TIE + Predator

Black Squadron TIE + Predator

It did really well against low agility ships. I went 2-2. I was really hoping to go against some of the archetypal lists out there like Corran/Dash and quad TLT Y-Wings, but I never got paired against them.

First match was a win, 166-66. He had Boba and Patrol Leader. Lots of stress mechanics. Predator more than pulled its weight here, along with the TIE Mk. II. Lost two TIEs.

Second match I got smoked by a Crack Swarm + Punisher. Only rolled 2 evades the entire time. Didn't kill anything.

Third match was another win, v. Poe, 2 B-Wings and an A-Wing. I managed to focus down 1 B-Wing before it ever even fired, in the very first round of firing no less. Round after that, he lost the second B-Wing because I was able to thoroughly predict his maneuvers. A-Wing had no shot, Poe landed a single hit on a TIE, second B-Wing died as everyone focused on it again. Poe lost a shield, which he regenerated. I blocked his k-turn, then chased him down with the TIEs which proceeded to rip him to shreds over two rounds. Rexler killed the A-Wing. Whole thing only lasted 5 rounds of firing. Only took 1 damage on a TIE, and Rexler lost shields and took a hull. Had decent evades, and focus tokens were spent on defense almost exclusively, while Predator did the heavy lifting on attacks (Poe was the only ship above PS 2).

Fourth match went much like the second, with me basically utterly failing to roll evades. Lost to a duel Decimator list with Palpy and Vader. Every single roll, natural or not, was 2 hits 2 crits. Nothin' i could do, but I did get half of Oicunn's points, so it wasn't an utter shutout.

In the end, I had a great time playing and meeting new people. The venue was amazing too, Gamer's Gauntlet in Clinton Township, MI. I really really wish I could have fought the TLT guy, I think I could have beat him with my list. As the B-Wings demonstrated, it utterly devours low agility small ships.

Awesome! I love hearing TIEs taking down Poe! Predator on two attack ships are beautiful. Flew against five A-Wings last week with predator and it was nasty. Almost like accuracy correctors out there, just two hits, two hits, two hits, two hits.

Would you change anything with your list now that you battled a pretty diverse field? Or run a complete different one?

Glad I didn't get paired with you, sounds like your list would have smoked me. Predator is so good, especial in numbers like that. It leaves you free to be defensive and since it is not action dependent it is not bothered by stress.

I bet once the new defender titles come out you'll have more success with this list. With the normal ties what action were you mostly taking? I feel like with predator I'd always evade with them and just rely on predator for my offensive modification.

Mostly took Focus. Usually only bother with an Evade if I know I won't have a shot, or don't think I will. I know evade is good, but usually what happens is i get a bunch of focus and no evades on the dice. Usually, anyway.

Which person/list were you?

Glad to hear you had a fun time! Planning on doing more?

Well, there aren't really any more SCs near me. I'd probably do another competitive event, but I think I'd need to give it a bit of time.

I flew an ion stresshog, double b-wings with tactician and fcs, and a green a-wing with pred and crack.

I apologize for not replying to this post sooner. I have no idea why I didn't see it there before.

As to your question, honestly I don't think I'd change much. I would say I had two main problems. Inconsistent (or more accurately, consistently cold) evade dice, and being very new to how some of these particular people flew. Some of them just had a drastically different play style, and it was good to experience that. I now have a much better idea of some approaches I might make in future matches.

I think I would be more likely to change how I play than what I play. I would probably take more evades early on, we'll say the first 2-3 rounds of firing, because if I can survive into the furball that is where I excel, and can start outflying my opponents and taking focus or barrel rolls instead. One opponent I flew against, round 2, I think was thoroughly surprised by my ability to eyeball very precise maneuvers, especially in one round where I positioned not one but two ships into spaces between blockers that was only about 1/4 of an inch wider than a ship base itself (and then proceeded to barrel roll one of them out of two or three firing arcs at once). If my dice could have matched my maneuvers it may have been a very different game. He'd have probably still won, but I could have taken out a good number of his ships at least. So yeah, taking some evades to perhaps even out that statistical hiccup might be a better idea.

Oh, you destroyed my buddy John though (Guri/Scyk/Bandits).

Yeah, but in fairness even he admitted his list wasn't super competative. Nice guy though.

Oh yeah, of course. Honestly, we were both just there to face new play styles and have fun. Y'all are welcome up at GS any time.
