Winter kit tournament (first competition)

By Mr Trep, in X-Wing Battle Reports

I've been playing X-wing for a month and i'm pretty hooked to the game. I decided to give a try on the competitive side of the game.

18 participants, winter kit tournament. I was probably the least experienced player in the group. All the guys welcomed me very kindly.

I decided to run the following list.

Poe Dameron, VI, R2-D2, autothrusters

Miranda, TLT, Tactician

Gold Squadron pilot, TLT, R2 Astromech.

Prior to the tournament, I had maybe a dozen games under my belt. I enjoy flying high mobility aces the most, but to be honest I haven't got much success with them since the learning curve is more difficult. So for my first tournament I decided to go with a list that would be a little bit easier to fly. The TLTs make it harder for my opponent to fly, and the rebel regen abilities might give a little more room for error.

** I know that this list would be much better if I run the Y-wing as a Stresshog but I don't own the cards yet. I've been spending alot in the last month to catch up with the waves; at some point I'll get there. but mean while I gotta enjoy what I have. **

--------------------------------------

First game. VS :

Lando, PTL, Nien Numb, Weapons Enginer, Title, EU

2x A-wing Prototype pilot with Autothrusters and Prockets.

I made sure I stayed away from his A-wings because i didnt want to get a taste of his Prockets on my low agility ships.

All game long I took TLT shots on his Lando while Poe took care of his Low pilot skill A-wings.

The game went pretty well for me. He never had an opportunity to use his Prockets. at some point Lando managed to take out my Y-wing. he should of focused his fire else where I think. this game went to time limit and Lando survived the match. I think I could of take him out but my opponent had very slow planning phase. I do not think it was on purpose tho, he was a classy guy.

72-25 Win.

--------------------------------------

Second game VS.

Palob TLT, crackshot, Tactician

Torkhil, TLT, boosk

2x Cartel Marauder with Glitterstim

I met this guy the week prior to the tournament at my FLG. very knowledgable player that is very active in the local X-wing community. he is famous for running brobots and other scum lists. I played him before and it was a disaster game for me, as a new player I had very little knowledge of what the scums can do. But this guy was kind enough to explain his squad in details and how nasty it was. I have to say I was intimidated before the game even started lol.

I made a huge mistake right off the bat. I put both TLTs in the middle of the starting area and I isolated Poe on the right side. The asteroid placement made it that Poe only had one angle of attack and I didnt noticed that until it was too late. Torkhil made him 0 PS and Palob stole his Focus token. All of his ship unleashed on Poe before he could fire a shot and he died on the second turn of the game. My K-wing and Y-wing were late to the party. I felt like a total noob.

After that it was just a matter of time. he took care of my 2 other ships. I managed to take out one of his Cartel Marauder just before he finished me so I avoided a shutout.

It was a very quick game. We stayed at the table for a while and he gave me a TON of advices on how to fly my list for the rest of the day. and I must say it helped me quite alot.

100-22 loss.

This guy went on to win the whole thing !

----------------------------------

Third game VS.

Another scum list I don't remember all of his upgrades tho.

he had guri with VI, Autothrusters, inertial depeners and something more.

He had this annoying M3-1 Scyk with push the limit and a HLC

and he had a YV-666 with boosk in it with a few upgrades aswell.

at first this game was a cruise for me. I out played his Guri quite easily and took him out early with Poe. I was proud about that. after that My TLTs melted his YV-666 but he managed to kill Poe. Anyways, the odds were still in my favor. Miranda was quite damaged so I flew her very conservatively and that was my biggest mistake. He stayed in the donut hole of my Y-wing for a few turns and he managed to kill it. At that point it was his 2 hull Scyk Vs my 2 hull + 1 sheild Miranda.

with 2 minutes remaining it was probably the last turn of the game. it was tense and alot of players who already had their game finished came to watch the end of our game. The pressure was heavy and I will forever regret my last move. I could of decided to run away with slam and Win the game by a slim points margin. But I didnt want to be that guy and decided to make one last Joust with him, maybe just for the sake to keep all the attendees entertained. My attack dices failed me. He then proceed to roll a 3 hits, So it all came down to one green evade roll for me and guess what I rolled a blank. So he killed my K-wing and made a happy dance. I was not a sore looser but it did hurt haha. It was all in good fun and people around the table really enjoyed this last minute joust.

100-71 Loss

This guy went on to make the Final Four. (Thanks to me ? haha !)

---------------------------------

Fourth and final game of the day ! VS.

standard Darth Vader build

Whisper with a few upgrades I don't remember exactly.

Omicron Group pilot with Palpatine.

This was my best game of the day as I started to really get the hang of my list. I was very proud on how I managed Poe, it felt good as I made quick work of whisper before he managed to put on some heavy damage. He flew his Vader quite well until he made some guessing mistakes, I surprised him with a well timed talon roll god **** it felt good. After that I melted his Lambda with my TLTs. He took out my Y-wing to score some points tho.

100-25 Win

----------------------------------

Conclusion. I finished 10th out of 18 with a 2-2 record.

It went much better than expected. the 2 wins are just a bonus as I went to the tournament with a learner attitude. When I look back at it, I loss to the champion and could of won my third game...

But in the end it was super fun!

Sounds like you had a very successful tournament and welcome to the game.

Batting .500 in your first tournament after playing so little is impressive in it's own right. Keep up the good work!

Thanks alot. I like to think that all the reading I have done here helped greatly my preparation!

Sometimes you will have to carve your own path. Just because something is working for an individual here does not mean it will work for you or in your local meta. Don't be afraid to experiment. Before scum released I was having a great time destroying our local meta with all A-Wing lists.
