Which tournament program to use?

By Mearl, in X-Wing

I will be TO for an upcoming store championship and am hoping to get opinions on tournament programs. We've used the TO app on the iPad for prior tournaments but are looking into usin Cryodex. I've downloaded Cryodex and fiddled around with the program but am failing to see much of any major difference. What am I missing?

Insight from those with experience using these programs is much appreciated.

Cryodex is much better. I have used both and Cryodex is more accurate for calculating the rounds, pairings and points.

For a store championship, I would highly recommend going ahead and using cryodex. The major difference between cryodex and the iOS X-Wing TO app is that the app still pairs players in the same win/loss bracket by mov. Cryodex pair players in the same win/loss bracket randomly. The tournament rules call for random pairings between players with the same tournament score, so cryodex is the clear choice in my opinion.

Cryodex also does some other nifty stuff like automatically avoid matching players with each other more than once during the tournament (the app only highlights when this happens and leaves it up to you to fix it). And cryodex has a very easy to use method for uploading the tournament data to list juggler when the tournament is over.

A friend uses the X-wing TO app to run league events and the occasional tourney, and I was astonished to find out that it not only makes mistakes in pairing, but its solution is to have you re-pair those players manually. That alone is a good enough reason to use Cryodex, for me.

It is also a pain to figure out how to do things in the app whereas Cryodex is more user friendly.

I would say that the iOS app is automatically disqualified because it doesn't follow tournament rules.

There's a reason that the pairings were changed to random. Last year, you'd have 2 ship builds fight other 2 ship builds with perfect MoV and the swarms that they fear get filtered out after round 1.

Is this true?? There have been lots of people running events with this app and if it can't follow the rules, not sure why anyone would do so...

Thanks for the replies. Looks like Cryodex is the hands down favorite. I'm curious about uploading the information to list juggler. Is there an method in Cryodex for inputting a player's list? I see that I can indicate which faction they are flying, but nothing beyond that. The program appears pretty simple but is there a manual or instructions anywhere?

According to the iTunes app store, the app was last updated on April 16, 2015. This was before the tournament rules about using MOV for pairings changed if I recall correctly. It's a subtle change that you can easily miss if you're not paying close attention.

EDIT: The app is super convenient in that I can run a casual event from my phone and don't have to lug around a laptop. For official events, though, I would not recommend it.

The first post in this thread details the process.
