I am in a game with a friend and a claims that if I tried to do a target lock with dash and it fails i cant barrel role closer and target lock then with ptl? As far as I do understand the rule I can try- if fail make a dofferent action, like boost or barrel and then try again. How does it work? Thanks for help.

Your friend is mistaken, and you're right. If you declare a target lock but it fails because you're out of range, then you can't perform the "acquire a target lock" action. It's perfectly legal to perform a barrel roll and then use Push the Limit to attempt to perform another target lock.

Again, the key is that if you can't perform an action for some reason, then the game doesn't "remember" that you tried and failed. The attempted action just doesn't count for anything, and you rewind to the moment before you declared it.
