Building Rocket inspired character (from Guardians of the Galaxy)

By JP_JP, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Like the title said, how would you build Rocket from the Guardians of the Galaxy.

It's more of an inspiration for a character, we are still in the Star Wars universe... Must be from published material also.

On a side note, we are starting with a +50xp Bonus after character creation.

The only small rodent race published so far is Drall.

So we have a base of Br 1, Ag 1, Int 4, Cun 2, Wis 2, Pre 2 , with one free rank in Knowledge(Education) .

Now the most obvious problem is choosing starting Career/spec.

Since Rocket is a bomb expert, maybe Hired Gun Demolitionist (which is better the Saboteur from AoR).

Since Rocket is a rifle maniac, we could go with Hired Gun Heavy or even Ace Gunner .

Since Rocket looks like a good tech, we could go with Mechanic (either from Engineer or Technician).

When trying to escape from prison, Rocket demonstrated some good analytical capabilities, so maybe Ambassador Analyst .

Now you might also go for something like Pilot since he flew a ship or even Assassin since he's a Bounty Hunter....

How would you build Rocket ?

Thanks

Don’t forget Chadra-Fan. I think they’re in AoR.

Why not Gadgeteer? Or Outlaw Tech? Both exemplify making crazy weapons and gadgets out of nothing which is the core of what he does

He probably has high Agility and Intelect with low Brawn and Willpower.

Mechanic + Contraption?

The best skills for making crazy weapons are probably Improvised Detonation (Demolitionist) or Contraption (Mechanic).

Outlaw Tech has Utility Belt which could also be useful to pop some Limited Ammo weapons out of thin air. Other notable talents from Outlaw Tech are 2 ranks of Jury Rigged and Known Schemati c (like knowing the layout of the prison and spotting all the cams and other security issues).

So high Agi and Int, with low brawn and will.

Maybe : Br 2, Agi 3, Int 4, Cun 3, Will 2, Pr 2

Could those be nice starting stats ? (I don't really like leaving one stat at 1) (You need +10xp from Obligations to get the 100xp you need to get to those stats)

First use Chandra Fan Then make him a Hired Gun Demolitionist, Heavy and finally Outlaw Tech.

The Artisan spec from F&D would be a good fit. It has a lot of the mechanic/outlaw tech talents and includes talents that let you forgo the use of tools which I think is a good fit since Rocket never seams to use tools, he just uses his hands. Mix Artisan with Heavy and I think that would make a great Rocket spec.

I think you need to decide how important is for you the look of Rocket. Is sticking to the raccoon look important to set him apart from the rest of the universe (like in GoG)? Or you don't care about his looks and want a star wars species that more or less fits the bill of Rocket's reasonable stats? In the first case keep the raccoon look (or somethign equally esotic like an Ewok) and apply the stats of an appropriate race (like Chadra Fan). In the second pick the race you prefer.

As for his career, given that he is an high xp charctes and likely has multiple specs, define what is the essence of his charcter and build on it. Personally i see Rocket as a technician: Outlaw tech/Heavy who is working as bounty hunter. On second thought the Artisan/Heavy is also a very good fit, as others have noted

Pump up his cunning and intelligence and rely on the Burly talents to reduce the cumbersome ratings of the biggest weapons.

I knew I had seen this topic before... just couldn't find it when I did a search... or maybe I was lazy when it didn't pop up in the first few results.

Thanks

I think Lareg is spot on the problem I have right now...

I know Rocket is probably a High XP character, but what would be his starting spec, his essence... what would define him in his first few steps out of the blues...

I'll take a look at the other forum thread and see how this all adds up...

Outlaw tech, Heavy and Demolitionist seem to be the most promising specs.

A player in our campaign built a "Rocket" character from a base of an Ewok. The Ewok hid on a cargo vessel that was ferrying cargo from Endor when the Imperials were just starting to set up a base to start the second Death Star.

It is funny to think of a "cute fuzzy fur-ball" to be running around with duel blasters.

We had a murder-wok in a previous game I was in. The player had managed to figure out a way to get his Brawn boosted to 5, and then took the Marauder spec. And he played him quite psychotically. Basically, like a psychotic midget Wookiee, and the fact that he was a midget just made him ten times more psychotic.

It was a little funny, for a little while.

I could see Rocket as a Drall.

Jawa isn`t out yet, but either that or Chadra-Fan: Bountyhunter Gadgeteer + Heavy so he can use all that cool gear and huge guns.

A Pilot/Gunner?

HA, I'm playing a Squib Bounty Hunter/ Gadgeteer. I went with 2 4 3 2 2 with focus on mechanics, space piloting, and heavy ranged. I picked up a small ACP repeater gun, jury rigged the auto fire to 1 advantage (pending final GM approval), and am now waiting to start wiping crowds of Stormtroopers from existence. I picked up the Squib info from the Unofficial Menagerie online. It seems to fit their character pretty well and the GM gave the OK. Deadringer for Rocket, IMHO. He works in tech procurement (duty) for the alliance snagging droids. Oh, and I stole like 900,000 tons of Imperial goods, tech, prisoners, as well as the huge cargo ship carting it. Super fun to play, especially while mocking my teammates relentlessly in character. I even rigged my captain's blaster with a flash mod that he thinks will create a blinding flash about 30 feet in front of him. It will work, but I look forward to the unicorns, rainbows, and tasteless messages that are going to be surprising everyone...

Blam, I murdered you! (read the comics if you have only seen the movies).

Here's what we used:

Species Abilities Wound Threshold: 9 + Brawn Strain Threshold: 11 + Willpower Starting XP: 100 Special Abilities: Squibs begin the game with one free rank in Negotiation. They still may not train Negotiation above Rank 2 during character creation. Tech Savvy: Squibs always treat Mechanics as being a career skill, regardless of their starting career. Size: Squibs have a Silhouette of 0. Characteristic Rating Brawn 1 Cunning 2 Presence 2 Agility 3 Intellect 2 Willpower 2

I made a Chadra-Fan heavy and he's 150xp in, and I can reccomend it for a Rocket Raccoon clone.

bump brawn up to 2, agility up to 4 and then pick the heavy tree. 3 ranks of burly will get you holding cumbersome 5 weapons with ease, and higher with a sling attachment. Later on take gadgeteer or modder and your natural 3 INT. will carry you from there

happy hunting!

Don't forget gunner, heavy/gunner is probably a good combo.
