Omega Leader - full fledged ace or more of a support?

By Vitalis, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Recently i Omega Ace really interested me. In my area meta is currently ace-heavy thats why he became so interesting for me.

As i have no option to try him now, i need opinions: can he be treated as full "ace" or is he more of a support ship?

With shield upgrade he is as durable as advanced, his ability is a killed and comms+juke is basically crackshot every turn. I should i not build a list around him and include him is i got ~25 spare points?

I would like to field him in

OL + Comm +Juke +Shield (30)

Thats 5 points cheaper then Vader or Soontir. Crackshot every turn. 5HP with decent defense. Only things that worries me are: 8PS, 2 reds and only 1 action per turn.

Rest of list: Fel and Palpi Lambda. I got 6 points left. Maybe Jammer for some defence on shuttle? Or upgrade to Jendon and keep OL close to shuttle?

Omega Leader is quite strong against a single enemy ship (that he has TL on). Against lots of enemies, he's less effective (crack swarms in particular laugh at him).

So yeah, he's good but has weaknesses (much like so many other ships in this game).

My general rule of thumb is, when building a list around a particular ship/pilot, try to identify what he is strong against and what he is weak against, and then take stuff elsewhere in your list to deal with the weak aspect. Also, its a good idea to take stuff that counters anything you feel afraid of or not confident against (whenever possible).

So for example, if Omega Leader is weak to crack swarm, then taking something that deals quite a lot of firepower (to threaten 1 TIE kill per turn) might be a good idea. As of now, the imperials don't have a ton of options in that regard. Buzzsaw Whisper, HLC named defender or predator/lone wolf Vader are probably the best options.

Of course, if you never see crack swarms, then there's no point in countering it, so I should add the caveat that you should only worry about stuff you are likely to see given your meta...

"support", insofar as he supports by murdering things

Omega's a Tie Fighter at the end of the day, albeit a super awesome one with sloops and green turns. He's not and never will be soontir, or even the Inquisitor, with their fancy multiple actions and boost and thrusters.

The trick with OL is that, for 26 points, he can put in far more work than you'd normally imagine. He's sort of the imperial stress hog in terms of largely self-sufficient anti-ace tech, only he's a lot more selfish (removes mods only for himself; does the work himself)

once the inquisitor hits, it'll be possible to run

Omega L (juke comms) [26]

Inquisitor (ptl, tie/v1, thrusters) [31]

Wampa [14]

Omnicron (palpie) [29]
