Tournament Today!

By sirseatbelt, in Star Wars: Armada

Hi friends! I'm going to a big 50 person tournament in Indianapolis today. Thought I'd try and post a report after each game. It will be 5 rounds played over two days. Here's my list.

Advantages:

Absurd damage potential divided over up to 5 attacks to mitigate defense tokens. I can kill a Motti ISD in one round.

Absurd maneuverability. I've had ships zoom out of the engagement zone after taking damage in the first round only to return on round 6 for final parting shots and I laugh at the front arc of an ISD.

All my ships are speed 4, so I can out-distance bomber squadrons without even trying too hard.

Probably some of the most fun I've had with Armada. So it's a good fleet to play for 10 hours...

Disadvantages:

Since all my defense comes from evade and redirect, XI7s ruin my day. Close range is bad news bears. I've made mistakes and had an ISD1 side arc (lucky rolls) 1-shot a corvette.

Extreme lack of HP. With XI7s you need only 8 damage on an attack to kill my strongest ships. Lots of dice. But I've seen it done.

Without squadrons and weak flack, my only defense against squadrons is speed and murdering carriers.

It's an extremely high risk/reward list. A single mistake can blow my entire fleet apart. But skillful piloting can just drive people insane. I've done both those things. At this point I'm fighting my own tendency to get greedy, go YOLO to try crazy strategies, and generally not think before I move.

But my ride is here! Will try to post after the first round!

RAYMUS TAINTIVE

Seems very similar to my Dodonna the Oppressor list.

If you are confident in your list you should do good as long as you don't make mistakes

Maybe we'll get to play each other with almost identical lists. :)

My only concern is the yellow objective. The other two are very good for me. But all the yellow ones are bad. I don't think I can exploit any of them. But hyperspace assault let's me place Admonition somewhere dangerous. I just decided it's better to bid for first. Registration starts in 20!

Why no TRC's? At the very least, corvettes NEED TRC's!

First game went poorly. My opponent happened to be the guy I play with regularly. So that was sad. We wanted to play new people!

It was an interesting game. I went first and picked superior positions. I set up abreast on the left corner of the map. He set up a conga line of 3 whales +Ackbar Tantive across from me and pointed towards the left of the map. Turn one I turned hard to the right and tried to hook behind him. But I couldn't quite do it and on turns 4 and 5 he blew up my corvettes on approach. I lost foresight on turn 6. He rolled like a hero (never less than 2 doubles per attack) but still well flown. It was 266/15 for a point spread of 1/9.

I did not bring TRCs because I went for engine techs. I find the added maneuverability has allowed me to do incredible things. Although I'm realizing that it doesn't mean much against Rebel mirror matches. My usual opponents only play Empire. So my anti rebel game is purely theoretical.

In the future it might be helpful for you to just have text on the post. It is extremely difficult to read. Please help us, help you.

Second and more minor, I would have offered some some copy and paste ideas to you list for you to maul over that may, or may, not be a good idea but at least something for you to consider. Since I was unable to copy and pastes and really see very well on the iPad that presented me with a little too much work.

Anyway, good luck with the rest of you day and hope you have fun!

I copied and pasted from fab fleet builder. I don't know what format it is. I'm sorry it made your life challenging.

Second game went much better. I scored 208/0. He had relentless + tarkir and 2 Raiders + titles, demolisher + engine techs. He was a fairly new player but he was really fun, and very tall. Well groomed beard. Attractive. Not relevant but he asked I include it.

I went first and chose hyperspace assault. I deployed my mc30s to cover one token at close-medium and the three cr90s to cover the second at long range. He deployed demolisher turn 2 by my corvettes. Did some good damage - took a cr90 to 1 hull but I zoomed out of there (engine techs for the win) and was able to kill it that turn before engaging the rest of his fleet. My corvettes did long range damage and one insane maneuver by a crippled mc30 + activation economy kept it from going poof. Very fun game.

I wonder if your list could take on Dodonna the Oppressor. . . Hmmmm

Learning how to play blue on blue missions in a tournament for the first time is rough. I had never played against the Empire as the Empire until Massing at Sullust back in September 2015. That was a rough game, lost it 2-8 I think. In my last tournament I only ever played against the Empire and it went much better.

Good luck for the tournament!!

Game three was good. I lost 277/93. He was flying a loaded up AFG and and a loaded MC80 with Ackbar, and 133 points of yt-2400s and outrider.

I actually lost to his fighter screen. My usual bomber plan is risky because it relies on separating the carrier from the squad and then abandoning them to the squadron phase. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. But I couldn't fly away from them. They're just able to keep up with a speed 4 ship. I took the AFG apart. It flew right in to my two mc-30s. I managed to weather the side arcs from his mc80. But his rogues tore me apart! If I wasn't running from them I might have been able to land enough attacks to kill him.

It was still a fun game. I went first and We played mine fields btw. They were not relevant.

This guys flys a bag of dicks. Admittedly a bag of dicks that beat me in game two. Well played sir.

Thanks for coming sirseatbelt! It's great getting to meet everyone from all over! :)

Tremendously fun tourney so far!

Fifty folks! Congrats! Meanwhile, I went to a store championship in San Francisco where we had a total of three people show up. Hey, locked in for third place (I squeaked out second, no thanks to TERRIBLE DICE LUCK, RWARGH).

Looking forward to more batreps from big Armada country!

It Works on My Machine™

Neat. Thanks guys. I appreciate the suggested solution, rather than just telling me you're withholding information. It's constructive AND useful. :)

Round 4. Rebel mirror match. Mc80 with x17 s, home one, ackbar. Mc30 scout with x17, apt, ordnance, title? I forget it wasn't relevant. One cr90 with overload pulse. He had 3 B-wings and 4 X-wings.

I went first and chose minefields. He laid a diagonal slant of mines and asteroids running corner to corner with two at the top to form a half letter T near his deployment zone.

I put Raymus and the naked CR-90 in the middle of the map as a fake to bait out his deployment. There was enough space for me to turn them right through the T or slow down and turn left and go back around my deployment zone.

I deployed my remaining 3 ships in the corner to loop around the outside of the T. He deployed in a line across pointing to my left. My MC30s and his MC80 ended up being completely irrelevant the entire game. It became a skirmish between Raymus and friend vs his overload pulse. If I had rolled 1 more damage in the last round we would have gone 5/5. Instead his mc30 caught up with both of mine in round 5 and round 6 was able to one-shot the one. So he scored a 62 point ship. The difference between a 5/5 and a 7/3 or whatever was literally 1 damage on a blue die. Made me sad.

Round 5 was really intense. It was a true mirror match. My opponent was running 4 CR90As with TRCs + Jaina's Light. 2 MC30 torpedo variants with Foresight, APTs and Ordnance Experts. His Admiral was MonMothma. So we got to test out the opposing doctrines. He bid 12 points for initiative so I went second, and he chose dangerous territory.

Asteroids and objective tokens got placed in such a way that it favoured my engine techs. I was able to scoop 60 points with two activations and ended up nabbing 5/6 tokens. We ended up stacking MC30s in an amusing way and his Foresight managed to survive two close range broadsides from my MC30s with 1 HP left. I managed to score 2 CR90 kills and he managed to kill a corvette in the last activation of the game. It came right down to the dice. If I had rolled an accuracy I'd have scored the MC30, and if he hadn't rolled an accuracy he wouldn't have killed my corvette. So that's two games I played that hinged on a single die roll. Which is exciting even though the dice were ultimately against me! It was an awesomely fun game. Lots of really tough choices by both players. Do I turn left and try to deny him this space with my close range die, or turn right and hope to intercept his flankers? Do I activate this ship and get a kill or that ship to prevent a loss? All kinds of cool interactions. We played right up to the minute and we were both sweating from the intensity of it all. Great way to end a tournament!

I think the advantage of the Mon Mothma list was his ability to change his commands to things other than navigate. I pretty much exclusively throw Navigate Commands to get value out of engine techs and line up side arcs. Distance + maneuverability is how my list stays alive. He's able to capitalize on close range evades, so he throws more aggressive commands. Also TRCs are silly good.

It ended in a 19pt win for me and a 5/5 split.

Final thoughts: The feature table was a Motti Duet with Rhymerball vs a Motti tripple vic list and a Rhymer Ball. So the reports of the demise of the victory are greatly exaggerated. Other top players included two 3 AFGs + Yavaris and squadron lists. The two guys I came up with placed 7th and 8th. 8th player was my 1st match. He was flying the Ackbar Whale Conga + a few bombers. I overheard a lot of people complaining about how tough that list is. Entertainingly he had NO IDEA that this list is the talk of the internet. He was genuinely surprised when we told him about all the discussions and theory-craft on trying to beat it. 7th place flew an ISD1 + some shennanigans? Leading shots I think?, an ISD2 + gunnery team, Demolisher + Engine Techs and APT/Ordnance Team, and Ozzel and 4 ties for escort. In a reasonably fighter-filled meta he said he felt like 4 ties was an effective amount of fighters to slow people down a turn. Ozzel is extremely good guys. Being able to dictate the flow of the engagement with surprisingly agile beat sticks is devastatingly effective. Is his next command a navigate? Am I safe moving here? I don't know?!?

There were 5 "wingless commanders" out of 37 active players and all but one did middle of the pack. So while I don't think the fighterless list is necessarily going to sweep your store championships I think they're fun and viable lists.

Another huge surprise was the number of people who got tabled. There were a lot of games where squadron heavy lists got tabled. There was also a surprising number of people who got tabled but still won (including the 1st place ISD Duet + Rhymer in the feature match) because of Superior Positions or Precision Strikes tokens. Watch out when picking those objectives. You might win the moral victory and blow your opponent out of space. But you can still lose.

I like my list a lot. It's obviously not the best list out there and it has a few hard counters. But it's really enjoyable to fly and I think if I was just a little bit better of a player I would have scored a lot better! But regionals are in April! So it's time for more practice...

Last but not least, a few memorable moments. I looked over at my friend with the 3 AFGs and I see a huge furball in a corner of the map and Ackbar on the other side of the table just minding his own business - Ackbar's owner had a big s**t eating grin on his face when he saw me scoping it out. Another friend ranting about how he did 36 damage to a triple ISD Motti list. 36 damage cards. Not a single kill. And last but not least a friend walks over and sits down. He looks at the table and my fleet scattered to the winds. Then he looks at my board state and sees how many of those ships are near death and completely out of firing range of anything for a long time. Then he just sighs and says "you're despicable." Also having my fleet labeled "a bag of dicks" was pretty funny. I might not have won many games. But I trolled a lot of people. :D

Was it mutual tabling? When you get tabled you lose no matter what your points are unless you table your opponent at the same turn.

I don't know the point results. But a number of games ended such that even though someone scored 400 points for tabling their opponent, the guy who got tabled scored EVEN MORE points in kills + victory points.
