Kanan and Ezra = Obi Wan and Anakin

By Crabbok, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Do you remember before the prequels? The original Trilogy had certainly set us up to expect certain things from the backstory of Obi Wan and Anakin. The Prequels came and thrashed every idea I had about their relationship.

But just like how Star Wars Rebels is acting like a throwback to many old concepts, like Ralph McQuarrie art... I believe they are also acting as a throwback to how that relationship between Obi Wan and Anakin SHOULD have been. Reflecting that relationship in Kanan and Ezra.

Statements like Obi Wan saying :

"When I first met him he was already a great pilot" - goes back to episode 1, Ezra is piloting the speeder when Kanan encounters him. And it's actually Kanan meeting Ezra, not some other guy meeting ezra and later saying "Oh btw, kanan meet ezra, ezre meet kanan. "

"I took it upon myself to train him" - Kanan wasn't forced to train Ezra by some dying master.... Kanan did this on his own.

" and a good friend" - You TRULY get the feeling that Ezra and Kanan are good friends now. Their teamwork is simply amazing. Their relationship is freaking awesome.... and IF Ezra ends up turning to the dark side at some point, it's going to be that much more heartbreaking.

This is Disney, fixing the prequels, in my mind.

No, kanan and Ezra are obi wan and LUKE. They've basically been setting up the crew as analogs for the OT cast, Hera is Han, Chopper is Chewie, Zeb fills in for the comic relief of the droids. I will be absolutely shocked if, in the final story arc for the show, Kanan doesn't sacrifice himself to let the others get away.

And the prequels did a fine job of telling a tragic story about Obi Wan and Anakin.

Maybe so, but it wasn't the story that we were set-up to expect in the original trilogy. So many things were wrong.

But if they had gone good... how would we have gotten Darth Vader? It was still a story worth telling, and in the end, through the original trilogy, it is a redemption story... with a whole lot of CGI. The redemption story is obviously a very good space opera trope, but we are already expecting another redemption story, but we do not know how it will end as they have had differences in the past... oh wait... excepting that it is a Disney property now... ok, so we know how it's going to go... well, at least it should be a visually thrilling ride to get there!

To be honest I don't really expect Kylo to be redeemable. Maybe in death, but he is set for the dark path.

We weren't told all that much by Obi Wan in the trilogy really. Mainly that Anakin was once a pupil of his until Vader killed him, which turned out to be himself from a certain point of view. Oh, and he was strong in the Force and a great pilot.

Obi-Wan is a liar and watching just OT should tell you that.

Watch The Clone Wars, that's Lucasfilm "fixing the prequels".

Kanan and Hera = the new Kyle Katarn and Jan Ors. I kinda see the Obi/Luke connection with Kanan and Ezra, but I do firmly believe Hera and Kanan were set to be the realized Kyle and Jan(even their choice of clothing and their appearances are suspicious).
