considering im in high school, and I can still slowly collect these ships, while keeping a good amount of money for more important stuff, I think that's pretty good.

While X-wing isn't the cheapest part of my diverse collection of gaming equipment, it's by no means the most expensive either. The particular honour belongs to Games Workshop products. Out of the 14 or so different systems I play (or have gear for), GW holds 6 of those spots which equates to a total of about $15,000 worth. My X-wing collection is less than $1,000 and includes ships from all three actions, and no huge ships.

I can't remember the last time any of my GW stuff was used, because I've been playing X-wing, World War II Naval or Modern Microarmour for the past couple of years.

Is X-wing expensive? I don't think so. When compared to other systems, that invariably need to be assembled and painted and thus require more investment than just the models, X-wing compares really well. The ability to go to a game, unwrap a blister pack and have it on the table ready to play in less than 5 minutes is just fantastic. No other game I've played has been able to come close to that.

Will I keep buying future waves? Just the models that appeal. And as I run all factions, that still leaves me plenty of options without having to buy every ship.

In conclusion: cheap or expensive? Definitely somewhere close to the cheaper end of the scale. Ongoing appeal? Absolutely!

I'm just gonna sit on that for a minute....

Parravon you proved this perfectly.

Now if your playing TAU (which I did) a basic core set of Firewarriors (basic troop choice) is 50.00 for box of 10 however you can run 12 for 1 squad choice, which means you need 2 boxes. You max out at 72 units for 6 troop choices and this is highly recommended for this Army because they are bad at hitting but can shoot weapons twice if in range. Now if your going to attach drones to each unit you going to want to buy a couple of drone boxes, or if you want them to ride a APC that's 1 per squad also. There are different Weapons configs for each troop choice which means if your playing and the weapons must be on the Mins or you cant use them your going to buy maybe 1 to 2 more boxes so you have the different models. By the way the basic troop choice config is about 200 points as described above. This does not take in account you must assemble and if your playing in tornys fully paint with 3 different colors and undercoat not counting as one. (GW never wants bad looking mins in any pictures from there ternys as it makes the product look bad) If you want someone to paint the models good that's 10-25 per model that is small much more larger. So for 100 firewarriors your looking at 1,000 for the mins and 1,000-2,000 for someone else to paint them.) There are 2 other core troop choices for this army.

I have not even covered HQ or anything else, but your spending 50 - 100 for a squad or even a single model when your going to want up to 3 models for a single unit choice in most non core troop option . Your going to want to buy at least 3 of each of the following for most army's based on the if the weapons are not on the model you cant use them. Also below does not include forgeworld models (this is 250 for a single model if you want one in your army https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-WW/Tau-KX139-Ta'unar-Supremacy-Armourand again you have to build and paint it having someone else do the larger models can run you from 1k-5k depending on the person. Also Forgeworld has a 1K ship model so if you wanting to have everything for a TAU army its 20,000 and up before you even look at putting them together and paint). Here is the site for building a list feel free to play with it. http://www.epicroster.com/Calculator?army=564ed7bbe4b09f26c891dee7f

GW changes Army's about every 5 years, which you need to pick up as they sometime change the units you own (new weapons or equipment most be on the model) or some Army's will just never be used again. (squats)

Last thing GW makes great models they suck at making clear rules, terrible items that are OP (void grend), or the fact that the armies you pay much more for are much stronger.

The rulebook wouldn't be included, in fact it would be a hard cover book with 500 pages and 400 of those pages would be fluff.

Fantasy Flight, if you're reading this...please please please go down this route! I need that Rule Book.

I want those 400 pages of fluff to be a high quality extremely detailed breakdown and exploded view of every single ship in the game with interviews from the pilots about the ship's handling.

Should I mention that's been accumulated over 30+ years?

This is part of the reason XWing doesnt seem like there is much of an investment to me, its new! I've been accumulating things for hunting, ie guns, reloading equipment, gear, etc for 34 years! Ive been doing leatherwork almost as long! The historical wargaming has been only a tad over a decade! XWing has been two+ years. So spending a few hundred a year on each "hobby" means XWing has a lot of catching up to do! LOL!

It's not expensive. It's just terribly addictive. I must have more, precious.

You may see me around town holding a "will work for crack shot cards" sign.

I want more more more more more.

It's worse than that really.

Not only do you need the ridiculously overpriced main rule book, but you also need the rule books for each army (over a dozen!) jut to know what your opponents armies can do. This means that you will spend a few hundred bucks just to get the rules for each faction.

Try playing without all the rules and you'll get curbstomped because you must know what each enemy unit is capable of. You must have someone idea of what you will do if you co e across any given enemy unit type.

And to make matters worse, the editio s change every five years with the individual army books spread out across that release. So the meta is always changing and the Army that you worked so hard on May be useless by the time you get it fully assembled, painted, converted etc

I will preface this by saying that I am a board gamer more than a miniature gamer. Replay value is crucial. For most games that I own the replay value comes from different setups, different opponents, different victory conditions, etc. It is easy to then figure that a $50 game played 100 times costs you $.50 a game. Split that among all the players involved and the price drops further.

I do not play X-Wing competitively and it is clear to me that its pricing model is different from most games that I play but when the same 3 ships get boring from the core set you can add a new ship for $15 (more or less depending on online shopping or size of ship) and spice things up. A relatively small investment every couple of months. As someone mentioned earlier in the thread, going to Starbucks a few times a week is a heckuva lot more expensive that this. That one new ship every so often is enough to grab the attention of my kids and get them back to the table to spend some time with their dad trying to out maneuver each other. This is value and time that I cannot (as a geeky father) put a price on. I have spent roughly $400 on this game, and with each new wave or ship it gets even more exciting. Do we play X-Wing every day? Not nearly, but every time it hits the table I am glad to have spent the money.

I guess my point is that the value in the game can only be determined by yourself. Who do you play with? How often do you play? Do you find it entertaining (because it is a game after all)? If you are looking for an excuse to stop buying new ships, then you don't need anyone's help or opinion.

Just bought a 70-200 2.8 is for canon. I use 5dm3. Any camera is fine. The important thing is your lens/glass.

I have a great time with xwing. Met wonderful people that thought me new games. And someone is putting me under the wing to teach me how to paint minis.

Not to expensive for me when I drop 2k on a camera lens. I do not buy every ship though. Just what i like to use. My goal to have at least 10 of each faction. Along there with reb/imp. Only 4 s/v.

Which one? Here I've been considering spending some $1300 or so for a new camera body and then another $1000+ for a monster telephoto zoom. While the camera may be toward the top end of crop sensors I know lenses can to a LOT higher but when I'm not getting paid for pictures they are hard to justify.

That's another thing about X-Wing's cost compared to some of the other things you could spend your "entertainment" money on. When you're done you should still have all of those models, cards, and stuff which you can potentially resell and recoup a large percentage of your initial investment. I kind of wish I'd bought into MtG when I first had the chance because there are few of those early cards which you could potentially use to trade one card for all the X-Wing products you might reasonably use. I'm thinking that even my Red Dragon "miniature" has possibly appreciated to 6x what I paid for it.

I have two midlife crisis addictions... bicycles and X-wing. Both I can share with my kids. The bikes keep me slim and X-wing keeps me nerdy so my Bride gets a fit husband who's too much a dweeb to be overly attractive. Both are less expensive than a sports car, fishing, or golf. It's a win for everybody!

Bikes are so much fun. especially mountain biking.

Motorcycles, aren't cheap.

Antique cars, aren't cheap

Fishing equipment? isn't cheap.

Drones? Not cheap at all

Rollerskates, bicycles. not exactly cheap.

Airsoft Guns? Not cheap.

No hobby is cheap. Hobbies are made with disposable income.

But I still think X-wing is one of the best investment/fun ratio out there

Neither Wave 7 or 8 have excited me much. Some of the cards are nice; some of the ships are ugly in my opinion. The Ghost is sort of cool because of the show but otherwise I'd be hard pressed to even consider it otherwise.

I've considered stopping. Looking for the right point. Balance, variety, favorite models, etc...

I'm hoping that if there is a soon released Rebel Veterans that will be a good place to say, 'enough' and be happy with what I own. Who knows? I was stopping before wave 7 and ended up getting those so we'll see.

I picked up X-Wing a little over a year and a half ago. I had seen it online and thought about getting into it for months before I finally bought the OT Core set. I have spent about $700 on my collection since then, picking up one or two expansions a month.

I played the game with my wife a little and occasionally my nephew but I was itching for some games where I wasn't teaching the rules. After some searching I found a store with an X-Wing night and made the hour and a half trip over there after work a few times. Beginning last July I found a store with a couple of regulars 5 minutes from my work so I've been playing over there about once a week since then.

For me the cost isn't so bad; the minis look great, I don't have to paint them, and I don't need to buy multiple packs to randomly get the thing I want. My previous money suck was PC gaming. I still buy some PC games from time to time but a whole lot less and I am fine with that because impulse buying has left me with a fair number of PC games that I didn't like all that much after the first hour or so. Flight sims and Racing sims still pull my money away but in general they are good value for the money as well because of the nature of those types of games.

I've met some cool people and had some good times playing X-Wing. I'm looking forward to my 2 year old son growing up and X-Wing being something we can play, if only once in a while, to pull him away from the TV and video games for a little while.

No doubt it's expensive. I mean, you shell out $12-$30, and you get 1 small piece of painted plastic with some cardboard. Really, how much do you think it cost them? My daughter will sometimes buy one of those $2.50 plastic toy things at Walmart that comes with a piece of candy - and the detail and paint job of them is just as good as X-Wing Miniatures.

That being said, I will continue to gradually feed my addiction and buy these things, but I'm not going to kid myself about the profit that FFG makes on them. They are expensive, but we gamers are conditioned to pay these prices, even though X-Wing is cheaper than many miniatures games. They are expensive but comparably not overpriced.

If you still don't believe me, look at some of the other games that FFG does that you literally overdose in plastic when you buy (Imperial Assault, Fortress America, Forbidden Stars, and soon to be released Star Wars Rebellion).

Once again, I love this game and will continue to support it.

It's all what you make out of it. Sure, the model is $15 bucks, and it's only worth that much if you leave it on the shelf. Make memories with that model playing games, the worth goes up. Win a store Championship with that model, I think you've gotten your money's worth out of it. Win Worlds? goes without saying, that Model was well worth it!

Could be lots worse. Could be random packs like MTG.

This is why I never complain about the cost. Giving up MTG pays for all my gaming combined.

Anyone ever play Axis and Allies miniatures, a bunch of my friends got into it, and I love WW2, so I got a few packs, and it's random stuff! I JUST WANT PANZERS GOSH DANGIT!!!! I got a truck, whose only purpose is to pull a cannon around, thank the lord I got a Cannon in the other pack.

I started buying when it first came out and was collecting and hording them for a while. Just liked putting them all on a shelf. Didn't even crack open the cardboard until this fall. Then I started buying multiples when I started wanting to learn how to play... then I started playing and learning what I really needed... then....well..... mistakes were made

The star wars licence can't be cheap, they have to have stuff made assembled painted then shipped from China so that's a significant up front cost.

Plus they don't know every ship will sell, look at tie advanced they've never been hard to find.

So while yes they could sell for less they probably don't make as much per model as gw who sell 50p`s worth of plastic for £50.
