Sure ain't cheap, cost to play x-wing

By EmpireErik, in X-Wing

The star wars licence can't be cheap, they have to have stuff made assembled painted then shipped from China so that's a significant up front cost.

Plus they don't know every ship will sell, look at tie advanced they've never been hard to find.

So while yes they could sell for less they probably don't make as much per model as gw who sell 50p`s worth of plastic for £50.

None of the ships are hard to find. They're mass produced, and importing from China is easy, especially thanks to Clinton.

GW's prices are a bit wonky in my opinion and could be priced lower to expand their market penetration (but I haven't seen anything other than their yearly financials), but their models are top notch quality, assuming you're fine with their heroic scale.

X-Wing models are typically of decent quality, and being pre-painted is certainly a plus. But it's not really much of an equivalent.

If you buy £50 of X-Wing models, you've gotten a lot less plastic for your money. And then you've had to buy other plastic you didn't need in order to get the cards you wanted to play with the plastic toys you did need. X-Wing is definitely not a value-product unless you're just playing for fun with your buddies who don't care if you got the rules cards online. The main thing that makes it favorable to Games Workshop is the significantly lower cost of entry, in that you only need 3-7 models to play (one side of) the game, typically. But if you're simply looking at "What you paid for" vs "What you got", no.

I disagree, their molds have evolved to the point they can mass produce most of their line rather easily. They're not that consistent with resin, and their plastic isn't any different from cheap chinese imports. They choose not to lower their prices based on marketinh, and they're going to if they don't want Chinese recasters or the new generation of 3D printing to put them under.

GW has nothing but itself to blame for its screwups, just like anyone who umbrella'd under EA.

The tournament list I use is about $299.81 (MSRP before tax & shipping)

also assumes you bought the ship for the card (which I did)

TIE Phantom (Whisper) $14.99

- VI (Millenium Falcon) $29.95

- Agent Kallus (Gozanti) $69.65

- Advanced Cloaking Device (included)

- Fire Control System (included)

Lambda Shuttle

- Emperor Palpatine ($99.99)

TIE /FO (Lockdown) ($14.99)

X-Wing core set ($39.99)

-Damage Deck

-Templates

-Range Ruler

-Asteroids

Your clearly new or you'd remember the interceptor and falcon shortages, as well as b-wing shortages and even at one point y-wings.

As for value yes you get less plastic per expansion but that models worth more £25 of space marines is under 200 points which is less than 10% of what you need to play.

One ship in x-wing is anything from 12% up to 50% of your list so you need far less to reach a full force.

A swarm sets you back £80 but even one of the cheapest armies knights sets you back more than three times that.

So individually yes the ship's cost more but they are also worth more.

I was referring to now, not then. I have no experience with this game, but everything I've bought has been remotely easy to find, and at discount. I never said anything regarding your ratio, but good on you for your quid numbers.

Of all the hobbies, desk top miniatures have evolved to keep the spending going (thanks Games Workshop) and FFG's X-Wing is no different in this respect. It's a great game, easy to learn and play and has "endless" waves. I am already full in my expansions.

So as a curiosity how far are you going with this? How expensive is this going to be for the full game?

I am looking forward to wave 8. But after that I seem to be unsure. I am already out side "my universe" but thanks to Rebels, I am buying this wave. Wow what an investment.

X-Wing is SO worth it, and they keep waves relatively balanced and well-designed. Have you seen Star Trek Attack Wing? They are on wave twenty-something. I think FFG has done an amazing job.
