So, this concept came to me because something funny cropped up in the game last night, but I don’t want to restrict this topic to just events that happened the previous evening.
We’re not quite into the “Weirdest thing your Engineers have ever done” territory, or anywhere near the “Craziest thing that ever happened in your game”, but I thought this was entertaining and I wanted to share it with folks. I also wanted to give you folks a chance to share your own experiences.
Anyway, onto what happened last night.
So, I’ve talked a bit about the F&D game where I have taken over as the GM. The GM who got this game started had work conflicts, and had to bow out. I was one of the players, and I wanted the game to continue, so I was willing to step up to the plate and take a crack at it.
Being an F&D game, of course all the starting players were Jedi-wannabees, or Force-users with some sort of connection to the Jedi. That was how the game started. But since I’ve taken over, I’ve gotten a player who has a non-Jedi Bounthyhunter (Chiss), and last night we just got another one (Chadra-fan).
I’m running “Chronicles of the Gatekeeper”, and the PCs have just arrived at Cato Nemoidia. The other PCs have done their respective things to gather some information, and the Bountyhunters want to do the same. So, I figure there has to be a Bountyhunter Guild Hall on the planet, and probably one in every major city.
I decided to make the Guild Hall kind of like a bank, in that there is a reception area by the front door, and you can go up to various counters to transact different kinds of business. They also have a “Bounty Hunters Only Store”, where items like weapons, armor, and other gear can be bought, and might even include some Restricted items.
I figured the “Receptionist” would probably be a decent enough bounty hunter, and maybe even a droid — an IG-88 model sounded good. This droid has access to the basic information they might want to know about the situation that I’ve set up, and can provide pointers if they want more detailed information.
Mr. Chiss Bountyhunter decides that he wants to get more information from the droid, and so offers up a bribe — In the form of a single credit, which he tries to “slot into” the droid in some fashion. Like, this droid is a slot machine for information. Riiiiiiiiiiight.
I figured the droid would be annoyed by this, so — using the exact same voice and mannerisms that he has been using up until now — he asks to see Mr. Chiss' bounty hunter ID card. When the card is handed over, the droid promptly puts it into a pocket, and proceeds to start talking to Mr. Chadra-fan Bountyhunter.
You should have seen the look on the face of the player for Mr. Chiss Bountyhunter. He thought he had permanently lost his ID!
Mr. Chadra-fan Bountyhunter plays his cards reasonably well, and gets good information. At the end of that process, he kindly asks for the ID card back for his buddy, which the droid hands over.
The droid then informs him that his friend should be more careful, because if you want to bribe someone in broad daylight in the public reception area of the Bounty Hunter Guild Hall, even he should realize that the price would be a lot higher than just one credit.
Of course, Mr. Chiss Bountyhunter was still standing right there. [1]
Yeah, no one died. No permanent damage was done.
But I think that was the funniest situation that I’ve seen in a long time in this game. ![]()
And I felt that I had to share that.
Thanks!
EDIT: [1] The other funny thing was that Mr. Chiss Bountyhunter didn’t understand why the droid would be offended by such a low amount, and what a droid would want with money anyway. Of course, that leads the question as to why he would offer money to a droid as a bribe, if he didn’t know what a droid would want with money.
As he discovered, the droid has an investment plan for retirement, and the brokerage fees on small change just isn’t worth it. I thought that was pretty funny, too. ![]()
