Last Resort

By pishposh, in Imperial Assault Rules Questions

Is using Last Resort optional? If I have it attached to a group with more than one unit does it automatically activate when the first unit is taken out?

Last Resort
Deplete this card when a figure in this group has suffered [damage] equal to its Health. Before that figure is defeated, roll 1 red die. Each figure and object on or adjacent to that figure suffers [damage] equal to the [damage] results.

To throw some fuel on the fire:

Inspiring leadership class card Supervisory Agent - Deplete this card before activating a group. Deploy an Imperial Officer card from your hand without paying its deployment cost.

So does that mean deplete = optional? Or maybe I used Supervisory Agent incorrectly.

Deplete is a cost you have to pay to activate the ability. See page 2 of the RRG: Abilities.

You choose whether to pay to cost to activate the ability.

You choose whether to pay to cost to activate the ability.

The words "choose to" don't appear anywhere in the rule section you cited. Neither do the words "choose", "choice", "optional", "doesn't have to" or "may".

So that doesn't really answer the question.

"Abilities provide special effects that can be performed above and beyond the standard rules of the game."

You can assume and take my word for it that abilities that may or can be used actually include a choice. You can choose to not to pay the cost to not activate the ability. You can choose which surge abilities to trigger when you have surges to spend, and you can choose to not spend surges if you don't want to (for example to avoid Gaarkhan's Rage).

Forcing Jyn to Quick Draw on figures too far away for her to reach the required accuracy would be a great way to avoid it and give Jyn 2 strain if she had to trigger it as soon as she could.

(Most agenda cards would be useless if you had to deplete them as soon as the trigger condition existed.)

"-- Deplete: The player must deplete the card to use this ability."

"To use" also implies choice.

OK thanks, that clears it up for me.
