The future of Armada...

By PsykoPenguin, in Star Wars: Armada

.... Man, some of the vitriol the FFG twitter is getting for having X-Wing Wave 8 Delayed until Mid-March.

Well to be fair, that's mostly because they published an article today saying Wave 8 would be in stores next week.

Oh, I'm mostly just very happy* that gaming groups can find a way to justify abuse, one way or another, I guess...

I've never been caught up in a collectible/miniature game before Armada, so I don't know they typically get releases, but I've had at least one of everything since wave 2 rolled out and it still feels new to me. Getting to play only 1-2 games per week, there are still so many things to try: never used Vader, never used a Raider, never used several Rogues/Villains, crazy deployment strategies I've seen, objectives I'd like to "master" (or at least understand better), etc.

Maybe it's different with games like MTG or X-Wing where you can get together with your friends and play several games in a row...I could imagine it might need constant refreshes. Right now I'm still loving wave 2. :)

For those especially bored:

May I suggest using Fab's Fleet Generator to assign random forces?

This combined with the 200 point 3 x 3 playing field results in a good, casual, absurd experience.

God DAMMIT people we have been over this.

the reason wave 3 has not been anounced is because I have not been able to save up for wave 2 ships.

I made a go fund me: https://www.gofundme.com/62gajtp8

I have been able to save up for rogues and vilains, raider, and mc30 though.

You cheeky bugger, you actually have......

eBegging... Awesome!

I was very commited to the joke and now I don't know how to remove it...

wait I found i can change the goal, i'll prolly be able to set it to 10 to make it reach its goal... well... I'll leave it at 30 for now, who knows...........

OMG we just talked about this yesterday with my group. Having two Fab random forces face off sounds so hilarious. I love how it throws like 8 upgrade cards on every ship.

I've not seen the comments, and I was rushing off to lunch when I posted that. I by no means find abusing FFG for this to be acceptable. It was a simple mistake on their part and honestly what harm is there? Wave 8 will be out a week or so after what they said in that article.

But the reaction isn't because Wave 8 is coming out in mid march, it's because they said it would be out next week but it isn't.

I just don't understand the unending need of some players to keep buying new things for a game to keep them playing a game.

Do you really need to keep buying new things to be happy and have fun with a game?

Are you content with one video game? Probably not. I buy a game every two or three months. The same game is not going to hold my interest any longer than that. For armada to hold my interest it needs to release new stuff.

I am still having fun with Empire at War! Who needs new games!

On a side note. I just bought an airbrush so now I have excuses to buy more copies of ships so I can practice!

I hear Wave 3 will be released when Half Life 3 announces

Chess? :P

Sorry, just had to. I'm actually an old fart who will likely stop buying as many things once the Liberty and wingless Liberty come out. Then I'll keep buying extraneous SD's until I have every ship seen on screen. Then I'll put everything on the DSII playmat and keep yelling "It's a Trap!"

Then I might actually play some games.

Lol. I do hope they make a wingless mc80. See why I'm so impatient? I just want to know what's come by!

Completely new to the game but I am all in. I do wish we had some teasers for Wave 3, but being new I am still catching up with the other waves. I don't see them ending Armada, it seems to be growing and maybe it took a little longer for it to catch on, which I can attest to but it does produce steady revenue and it has some serious backing.

On a side note someone mentioned quitting it if there was not a Wave 3 release soon, please message me and I will gladly take your ships off your hands.

they made a wingless mc80, it's in wave 2...

Nah, during RotJ production what we know as the Liberty did not have her wings attached and was painted a pearly white. To add some variety they changed up that model to resemble the Liberty. The Wingless Liberty is shown only in something like three shots, and is hardly remembered. Home One is very distinct by contrast, mostly lacking the projecting "tail" that the Liberty and wingless Liberty have.

I would love that permutation of the model. However, like how the TIE Avenger just can't seem to happen in X-Wing, the Wingless Liberty I think is too low-visibility for it to be made into a model. I'd love to be wrong.

There's still some stuff I could do with Wave 2 in trying to find my desired balanced list archetype. However as an Imperial player I feel a little... stifled? by the choices we have. Even if the VSD isn't completely hosed, it still doesn't feel as flexible as the Assault Frigate does, and by extension the Empire doesn't seem as free in their choices as the rebels do. So I wouldn't mind seeing a few more ships to fill out the Imperial side and open up a little more options.

I'm confused, if you just random, then how do you ensure that you have Raymus Taintive in your fleet?

Pssh, y'all talking about enjoying video games that came out this century, and here I am playing Rebellion and Panzer General.

Also, after playing Warhammer and 40k for a decade, this release schedule doesn't bother me. In the ten years I played them, my Dwarf army was updated twice, and only two new units were ever added. Everything else was just updating points costs and rules to match the latest ruleset. My major gripe with the way FFG handles releases is that they announce them so goddamn far in the future. Armada was announced in August and came out in April. FFG, y u do dis? I heard about it and crapped my pants in excitement, then sat there in soiled pants for eight months. Kind of kills your enthusiasm. And your marriage. But mainly the enthusiasm thing.

You dont and you get over that crutch.

Oh wow... Panzer General. Now there's a game I've not heard in a looong time. A looong time.

Excuse me, I think my afternoon just filled up...

40k had the worst release schedule for the longest time. Several of their armies had no gotten updates in 40k for YEARS!!!

I still need to get Rebellion off of Gog. . .

Every time a 40K player grumbles about their release schedule, a Fantasy player curses them in High Bretonnian or Dark Khazalid. Tis the natural order of things, and the curse of the Fleur De Lis de Nottingham.

... Rebellion's on Gog? Might be just the tonic to the bitter reminder that I have Panzer General II's CD, and no compatable computer to play it on.

So all in all, it could be a whole lot worse when it comest o FFG's releases. As the venerable serpent doth say, "Always look on the bright side of life." -whistles a bit-

If Armada stops now, I'm left with a great-looking board game that evokes everything I've always wanted Star Wars to be. My only regret would be that Admiral Piett missed the show.

Yeah I still play Panzer General, Peoples General and the original X-com so I understand. And Rebellion has now been added to that list, lol. Totally agree about the release schedule. I remember a time when I waited years for updates to certain other games. So the one Wave a year is kind of nice. Plus It gives me time to buy both sides.

That's true, the slower pace does make it easier to own multiples of every ship.
