When and how are Regionals usually announced?
Dear FFG - Please Send More Regional Kits
What our US cousins fail to realise is that a 3 hour drive in a uk that involves going to (practically) any city will actually take you more like 5 hours thanks to the fact we have about 20x the number of cars on the road per square mile of road than in the states.
Seriously?
It can take me 5 hours to go about 5 miles on some freeways in and around LA.
Wow you guys are crazy, driving such long distances.
On the other hand you dont have to put up with crazy traffic jams like I do, can take an hour to move 10 km.
I don't have any problem believing that, but still--for my friend in Albuquerque, New Mexico last year, his closest option for Regionals was the six-hour drive to Denver, Colorado. What our US cousins fail to realise is that a 3 hour drive in a uk that involves going to (practically) any city will actually take you more like 5 hours thanks to the fact we have about 20x the number of cars on the road per square mile of road than in the states.
That's... amazing, I guess, although not in a good way. I can't imagine a mode of travel less comfortable than coach airfare in the US, so you have my deepest sympathies. As a side note, your flights cost abot the same as our trains, take less time and offer a lot more comfort. There was a chap here that travelled from one uk town to another via Berlin as the flights were cheaper than getting the train!
Yeah, generally your going to have a regional within two hours of you here, it's only going to be if you want to attend multiple you need to do a bit more driving.
I've flown coach in America Boston to Chicago. It wasn't too bad. The lack of comfort on the plane was made up for at the ease of boarding and alighting, not crossing an international border really speeds things up. It's the 4 hours spent pee-pee'd up the wall at the airports that I hate most about flying.
You should seriously google image search some of our trains. First western, my local provider would be a good start. The things look like the only pre WW2 tech still in use in our tranport system!
Random thought: UK trains do have one advantage over flying - you can still travel by train without any obligatory anal probe
You have clearly not sat in a British railway seat.

Ah, good old Virgin Trains. So that's what that horrifying smell is when you step on board.
I have what will probably be a 3 hour round-trip train ride to a Store tournament tomorrow. ![]()
Be happy that your country even gets one.. We here in Finland are going to miss our Regionals second time in a row now.
Last year we didn't get one, because the store which held Regionals in 2014 said that it was too expensive and so on. This year they said that X-wing sells well, but there isn't enough players that play actively..(bull.. I say...) We had 14 players today in our store (other than theirs, they don't have play area suitable for X-wing at least in my city)
Well this year we had 24 players tournament fully booked in less than 2 hours and many people left out. This same store would've been eager to host Regionals this year too with space for easily 32-64 players. But got denied or something..
Basically our OP kit distributor (Fantasiapelit) said that they have their own plans for Regionals, but for us when asked they said that they don't have any shop that is willing to host Regionals (Again)
So we are missing out Regionals again at this moment..
We just want our X-Wing Regionals.. There hasn't been any problem with other games (mainly LCG's)
We have sent FFG messages about this as this is total bull.. that we are having over here. Haven't received any reply from them.
Poland will have about 4 probably, come visit ![]()

Deal with it

DC and LA would like a word with you.
Sorry for the double posting.
carry on wayward son. There'll be peace when you are done.
Edited by maniacmcgooI really hope not. I'm kind of sick and tired of the "UK and Ireland" lumping together we get all the time. Just because there's X amount of events on in the UK, doesn't mean any one of them is a convenient, or even possible, trip for an Irish player. Even the Belfast one is a 6 hour trip each way (the UK mainland ones would almost be shorter trips).
I know my local put in a bid to host one, so I do hope that's not a final list. At the very least, there should be one in Dublin...

There is one in Dublin, Gamers World and one in Limerick, The Gathering.
Only one in Scotland.
And lols to everyone who thinks you can drive from one end the big island to the other in 8 hours.

USA is not UK, which is not Europe etc. People in different countries have very different ideas about reasonable travel times, and I think the only thing we can take from this discussion is foreign people are strange and more Regionals please with at least 1 per country!
The irony of all this is that I'm another Brit and in the last few year I haven't even considered regionals due to travel cost/inconvenience but this year my FLGS(Half an hours walk from home) has landed a Regional so its going to be a funtime for all of us in the east of England who were previously shut out of the next level of the UK tournament circuit.
When did the UK stop being part of Europe?
It's not as if Europe is one country.
Edited by DagonetI think that one thing people are forgetting when they ask for more Regional kits is that they're meant to be one per region. If they were being handed out to anyone who wants to host one, they'd be Store Championships instead. Are we going to complain that there's only one National next?
That said, FFG/Esdevium would probably do well to be more open about which regions cover which areas of the UK. I'm guessing that they don't want people to feel that they're constrained to only taking part in the region they live in (or have others misuse the maps to whine about "outsiders coming taking our prizes!")
Edited by nekomatafuyuWait, is there an updated list? Last I saw, there was nothing south of Belfast here?

Fair points, well made.
Looking at the list of Stores that have been given a Regional then (assuming my geography is reasonably accurate) the full south coast of England has missed out.
And Northern Ireland.
Funkleton's got a pretty valid grumble methinks.

Wait, is there an updated list? Last I saw, there was nothing south of Belfast here?

I must have been looking at an old list. I could have sworn the one I saw said Belfast, and no others for here.
Now I just have to hope one of the two isn't scheduled on a weekend I'm working, a lá every goddamn SC in the country this year.
Hmm, I was sure I saw one for Exeter. I've just realised though that I was focusing more on Armada than X-Wing (partially due to having won an Armada SC but not an X-Wing SC). In that case, it looks like either the south coast is split between Cardiff and Bromley's regions, or we're missing an event.
I know for Armada at least it would take me nearly 4 hours to get to my nearest RC in Hockley (Essex) by train due to it being on the other side of London, whereas I can get to Cardiff in half that time (although at twice the price). I suspect the same would be true of trying to get to Bromley, sadly :/
I was wrong, Bromley is apparently in Kent, which just leaves the South West of England as having no regional.
Edit: I was saying wrong about myself. But then again, it is Englandshire.

Anyone from Sierra Leone want to chime in?
When did the UK stop being part of Europe?

Apologies for overgeneralisation. UK is obviously still part of Europe was just getting infuriated by Americans applying their completely different standard of "reasonable" travel distances to berate someone who's standard is much closer to my own. Applying a national standard like its a universal is tone deaf bull that I hope the internet can help remedy as people learn from other cultures! This is how things like FFG regional distribution gets turned into a problem every year.

Exactly, we have bugger all idea of what they consider to be a valid region size so lack a yardstick for comparison. Would it really be that bad to hand out Regionals to anyone who has capacity to host a large event(say 40 plus players?) and a proven track record of running sucessful X-Wing events for the last year or so? That seems to be the criterion that got my FLGS a regional, and I would hope that that no one else's would miss on the opportunity due to a lack of tournament kits.

Yes these are very first much world problems. This is a forum for people who play with toy spaceships so I think we can take this as a given. It doesn't change the fact that quite often the cost of travelling to and from a single regional event could quite easily match the cash value of a large fraction of my X-Wing collection.
