Dear FFG - Please Send More Regional Kits

By Funkleton, in X-Wing

Last year, for me to travel to my nearest regional I would have had to go to another country (Wales).

Same story this year.

According to the person is charge of OP at Esdivium this is due to the limited number of Regional Kits that they receive from FFG.

So while it's disappointing - there is a simple solution and plenty of time to implement it.

hahaha. what's that? a three hour drive? and like 5 events within 3 or 4 hours of each other? be glad you're not in the U.S., where you'll be lucky to have one regional within 8 hours of your house.

you can't even drive for 8 hours in the UK without falling into the ocean.

Yes - but what you pay for a gallon of petrol we pay for a litre :)

This country would collapse into a zombie apocalypse if we had to pay your prices for guzzoline.

That's your fault for converting to metric. ;)

I mean... on one hand, I feel for you. It's tough not to live near any Regionals.

On the other hand, I'm assuming you mean you'd have to travel all the way to Cardiff for the nearest SC? That means it's probably no more than a few hours. I'm not an expert on UK geography, but... I mean, if you were in Ireland the closest would certainly be Dublin or Limerick. If you were in Scotland, it would be at Lanark, so you must be in England.

And that means you have six Regionals locations within an area about the size of a medium-sized US state. You're probably a very comfortable drive (or, because you live in a civilized 21st-century nation, even a train ride!) from more than one Regionals, which is pretty good compared to a lot of us here in the US.

I'm for more regionals across the board. I drove 5 hours each to attend 2 last year. On the bright side, I'm hearing rumors that Michigan will get one this year. :-)

However, given the turnout at tournaments recently with the movie release, I think we just need more regionals period! I expect them to fill up quickly.

So yes FFG, please increase them significantly from last year in the U.S. and across the pond.

I should note that it won't be a comfortable train ride however. We're not that civilised! ;)

I'm for raising the number of regionals, but it's less to do with distance apart (though that would be good) and more to do with the ridiculous popularity of the game and the amount of people we're seeing at Store Championships.

I went to two regionals last year. One was, blessedly, about 45 minutes from my house. The other about 8 hours and a hotel stay.

I'm more confused by the announcement there's a regional st the uk games exp. the Open event is being held there so will it be a choice of entering the regional or the open series? Seems odd.

What our US cousins fail to realise is that a 3 hour drive in a uk that involves going to (practically) any city will actually take you more like 5 hours thanks to the fact we have about 20x the number of cars on the road per square mile of road than in the states.

As a side note, your flights cost abot the same as our trains, take less time and offer a lot more comfort. There was a chap here that travelled from one uk town to another via Berlin as the flights were cheaper than getting the train!

I don't see anything on FFG announcing regional dates and locations. Where did this info come from?

Organized Play linked it on Facebook.

Also, thus far it is only UK Regionals announced.

OT, another country in Europe is comparable to another state here in the US. I live in a state where nearly everything is in another state so I'm sympathetic... In fact, I'd bet that I'll have to drive further to get to a SC than OP will to get to Regionals this year.

Unless I'm missing something, we still don't know the dates yet, just which stores will be holding the events.

One thing I find interesting is that it will take me twice as long to get to my nearest regional in Hockley than it will do to get to Cardiff. I may have to weigh up my options on this one :/

I didn't get to go to ANY regionals last year, because while I'm in the US, I live in Alaska. The closest regional was in Seattle, which is about a 4 hour (and not inexpensive) plane ride. Or a multi-day drive through canada....

I should note that it won't be a comfortable train ride however. We're not that civilised! ;)

Or affordable.

I do wish the regional stuff was broken up a bit more too. It's at a point now where you genuinely might not get to one because of numbers or distance, (or plain cost). It'd be nice to see something like provincial tournaments, or sub-divided regions. Due to work and bad luck with scheduling, I'm already missing every store championship in the country (not that there are many). That's not anyone else's fault, but I'm definitely not on my own in that boat.

The only way this is true is if "train" is British slang for "Hunger Games".

Well, only if you compare the countries in the UK. Travel to a different country usually also involves a change of language (within 4 hours travel by boat or car I can pick and choose from at least 5 languages not my own). That changes accessibility of course.

I don't have any problem believing that, but still--for my friend in Albuquerque, New Mexico last year, his closest option for Regionals was the six-hour drive to Denver, Colorado.

That's... amazing, I guess, although not in a good way. I can't imagine a mode of travel less comfortable than coach airfare in the US, so you have my deepest sympathies.

I was really tempted to go to the Yavin open, considering it's "only" a flight away, but between a 4 hour drive to the airport, the flight, hotels, tickets, car rental, and the terrifying exchange rate, it'd be about the same for me to fly to Worlds.

Be happy that your country even gets one.. We here in Finland are going to miss our Regionals second time in a row now.

Last year we didn't get one, because the store which held Regionals in 2014 said that it was too expensive and so on. This year they said that X-wing sells well, but there isn't enough players that play actively..(bull.. I say...) We had 14 players today in our store (other than theirs, they don't have play area suitable for X-wing at least in my city)

Well this year we had 24 players tournament fully booked in less than 2 hours and many people left out. This same store would've been eager to host Regionals this year too with space for easily 32-64 players. But got denied or something..

Basically our OP kit distributor (Fantasiapelit) said that they have their own plans for Regionals, but for us when asked they said that they don't have any shop that is willing to host Regionals (Again)

So we are missing out Regionals again at this moment..

We just want our X-Wing Regionals.. There hasn't been any problem with other games (mainly LCG's)

We have sent FFG messages about this as this is total bull.. that we are having over here. Haven't received any reply from them.

Random thought: UK trains do have one advantage over flying - you can still travel by train without any obligatory anal probe :P

Here in the UK then it could be worse, as you say. The entire island is about an 8 hour drive top-to-bottom, as opposed to days of travel in the continental USA, or not having one in your country AT ALL (commiserations on that, by the way).

But then again it could be better too. I mean, if the problem really is the number of reward kits available then that seems a little absurd - how hard is it to print even 5 more copies for shipping to the UK? Or any other place? Why is a fairly large global gaming company routinely unable to provide a handful of paper cards and plastic tokens to their own events?
