My Descent painted figures - with custom bases

By SpawnGarret, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

That dragon though Spawn, thumbs up!

Need to get hold onto the mini as well!

Awesome! Question, how many time does it take to paint a mini for you? One hero will cost me roughly one hour, including in between drying/ coffee making etc.
And how do you post images in a thread? All I could think of was linking to imgur.

It's hard to measure as I never work on a single mini and I usually make long breaks even within a single evening. I think my bandwidth is around 1 mini/evening (depending on mini, of course), and each evening would be around few hours dedicated.

I upload images on BGG or FB and then hotlink here.

Haha well, that also explains the difference in quality;) A few things I do to keep it less time consuming (talking mainly about heroes, I did all the zombies in 15 minutes or so):

1) I use primer, but I don't basecoat. And I don't remove mould lines. This saves time in the preparation process.

2) I don't spend a lot of time mixing colours, very often straight from the bottle. While this causes a lot of my heroes having the same shades of green/red etc. It doesn't really stand out because you don't play with them side by side.

3) I don't apply many layers with thin paint, but if my hand is steady enough only one with thicker paint. If the paint is too thin, it dries less quickly and creates bubbles if applied too quickly. Maybe you lose a little detail, but your weren't going to spot that anyway while looking at them from a 'gaming' distance.

4) Like SpawnGarret, I paint multiple minis at the same time. Usually a monster group, or 2-3 heroes so I can reuse the paint. The colour brown for leather, or metal for swords.

5) I also don't highlight. I know. It is lazy, I confess:p

6) I don't rework the bases. This has two reasons. The first is obviously that it takes time. The second is that it makes it easier to distinguish the minion from the master. My merriods for instance, don't have a colour difference because I felt that it wouldn't look good/ I couldn't find a way to make it look good. It depends on the monster tough, the cave spider master has a red cross, and the ettin master a red jacket instead of a brown one.

Maybe in the future, I will redo some of them. Like, removing the paint from the heroes so I can remove the mould lines or things like that. But for now, I am happy with the results.

I will post a link to my painted minis so you can check later. If you feel they don't look too bad maybe you can consider using some of the things I do (or don't do:p).

It's amazing!

Where did you get the miners proxies? Do you also have some custom miniatures for allies (reanimate, wolf, stones, shadow and etc)?

Thank you!
All my proxies come from Reaper, the miners are those guys: http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/miners/latest/50317

I will have custom proxies for pretty much all familiars and NPCs from the all campaigns I play, except the ones which are not treated as figure - as this would complicate the gameplay.

And of course, you'll see all of them here, eventually :)

Long time no update :)

I like your design for all your painted figures along with the bases, and also how the Farrow siblings having their base the same theme with each other.

Alys Raine is a different one since her model is like outside of the square (like she's falling out). Otherwise, everything you do is awesome. Keep it up :D

Paintjob is cool !

But bases are strange, especially for Alys Rayne,

Nice catch for Farrows ;)

Maybe it's a weak angle for get base. Essentially, she got a huge templar stone with crosses and gothic letters

I wish I had your skills

Thank you, but it's not too hard to get those skills ;)

I don't know if you have Mists of Bilehall expansion, or the Lieutenant pack for Ardus, Kyndrithul or Zairhell, but I would really Love to see if you manage to combine Kyndrithul with a Bone Horror like the artwork of him.
