Aren't Plasma Torpedoes backwards?

By DarthEnderX, in X-Wing

If this attack hits, remove a shield token from target ship before dealing damage

This. Even if it means increasing the cost of the Torpedo.

That is effectively just saying "do +1 damage" as the times you won't aren't common enough to bother with. The point of the weapon is to be especially good at stripping shields, not causing more damage. If you hit a scyk with 2 booms using the above wording the ship takes an extra hull damage and is destroyed instead of surviving. That isn't doing extra damage to shields, that's just doing extra damage period, which is way more powerful and contrary to the design intention and flavor of the weapon.

Not to mention 3 points is sweet for four dice + possibility of extra damage

It let's you roll redline with plamas and clusters with jukerelay omega L and two crackshot omegas :D

Yeah, the design's off. The possible but very rare extra damage distracts from the fact that it's a cheap 4-attack-dice torpedo.

It would have been a cleaner and more appealing design if it didn't have that second sentence at all. Then people would think of it as a cheaper alternative to Proton Torpedos, rather than focus on how the extra damage so rarely happens.

Though that damage is pretty fantastic when you actually get it. ;)

And don't forget, it came out the wave where they released TLTs, new bombs that were scariest against large ships, and ordinance 'fixes'. They were trying to release tools to hurt fat pancakes (remember those?); plasma torps probably seemed like a good counter to a fat Han, where you'd strip Shields (and thus start working on his hull) in quick order, aka before you'd lost too much of your own fleet.

It was never intended to be focusing down a regen Corran or Poe, even if it does wipe their shields pretty good too.

Shouldn't they take away a shield token BEFORE dealing damage?

I mean, it basically makes their special ability useless against most starfighters, because most of them won't have shields anymore anyway after getting hit by a 4 attack torpedo.

Seems an odd design choice is all.

Post Guidance Chips and LRS: Ordnancewing too OP ban pls

These are going to be significantly better once Chips and LRS fix ordnance. They'll be a less expensive version of Proton Torpedoes, and they have some synergy with Guidance Chip Ten Numb.

They're costed appropriately considering the fixes they're going to get. 4 dice for 3 points and a super concussion missile conversion for free with Chips is a steal.

They're actually pretty awesome. As others have mentioned, they'd be too good for the cost the other way.
