First Game with Gonk and Dengar Crew

By Engine25, in X-Wing

Fellow at the FLGS last night let me proxy Gonk and Dengar on my YV last night. My list was:

Bossk

+Veteran Instincts

+Gonk

+Dengar

+Outlaw Tech

+Engine Upgrade

Syndicate Thug

+R4 Agromech

+Twin Laser Turret

×2

He was playing a Palpatine Shuttle and a mini swarm of unique TIE Fighters.

He smartly went after the TLTS first, and I was having trouble connecting attacks, so I traded both Y wings for Wampa after a few turns of fire (other than one attack when I dealt 4 damage to the shuttle from Range 3 because Bossk triggered). Not a great start for me, but at this point, I had Bossk completely untouched and 3 shields ready to be recovered on Gonk, against 3 untouched TIE Fighters and a gently damaged shuttle.

I pulled it out. Got the shuttle down to 1 but then it had to come around and waS out of my hair for a minute. He pursued me through rocks and had to break up, so I could at least guarantee that in most turns he couldn't attack me with every ship. He did pull a coupleasure if highly skilled turns and caught me in the net with nowhere to boost, but like I said, Gonk got me through it. Over the course if the game, he dealt ten damage to the YV, only one of which was a hull damage. The extra shields protected me from quite a few critical hits, as well, so those last 2 HP could well have been direct hits. And with Dengar and Outlaw Tech, I could make essentially any maneuver and still boost or Gonk without sacrificing a modification.

The Scum large ships have been characteristically weak for a while, except for IGs. Gonk is admittedly limited compared to Rebel regen options, but is a HUGE step in the right direction. Can't wait till its actually legal.

So Wave 8, then...

Darn I miss Wednesday Night X-wing!! :(

Thats really cool you got that much life out of a YV, my brother will be really happy, often times I kill Bossk quickly.

Dengar is absolutely fantastic. I've been running this squad on vassal and Dengar crew has been key to many victories.

I am seriously chomping at the bit to start running some YV-666 builds like this, and am glad to hear that it's working out for you!

You still have to be very careful. Before this, I have had the most luck with the YV by using pilot skill as your defense. I play Bossk not because of his ability, but because he has access to PS9 boost.

EVERY time you are about to take a R1 shot, unless you KNOW you can finish the ship off before it fires, you boost. Every time. You might have to give up a few attacks, but you'll get much more value from the ship over the course of the match. Don't bother spending points on making Bossk trigger. When it works, it's awesome, but it's a point trap. Other than that, just have fun!

Still not sure if I'd compete with it, but it is definitely a step in the right direction, like I said. Just need some practice. Dengar crew is a great boon because you don't have to telegraph your target as with K4. Gonk is limited, but if you're careful, it will certainly change the game for the YV and Firespray.

YVs are awesome. It's a shuttle that doesn't suck so much...everyone fears my shuttle play already so this is very scary for them.

I've been saying that Gonk is going to be a power card. I fly a 58 point Imperial Boba and there are multiple turns of downtime where one could regenerate or bank an extra shield, and that's not counting the freebie turn or two you get at the start of the game that could be drawn out an extra turn or two if one wanted.

Firesprays spend multiple turns out of the fight. Getting even one shield regenerated out of Gonk would be worth it, and you'll be able to easily regen more than that.

Was the action to use Gonk worth the Regan?

My only problem with running bossk pilot is that it means I can't run bossk crew...

Depends on the turn. But consider this: There are always pre-combat turns. Spend those turns on the approach to slow roll and stock up a few shield tokens on the Gonk card. Then, once you have some prepared, it's essentially no different than taking the evade action, other than the fact that these tokens do not go away at the end of the turn, they stack. In the YV and Firespray, you will inevitably have a turn or two where little combat is happening, and I even found it useful to Gonk in combat during one turn. It will obviously work best when you also have an attack modification, so that your action is not purely defensive. Pair with Dengar Crew, K4, or Boba Fett pilot!

Fair point, but I'm betting a Trandoshan Slaver with Bossk crew, Gunner, and Gonk will be an aggressive build for its cost. I might still take Dengar Crew in place of Bossk, though.

I've been running bossk with k4, calculation and greedo.

Tore apart a a triple t-70 player that's a perennial contender this year. K4 keeps the actions flowing and I can focus when I have the chance for calculation to proc. Greedo makes the crits stick after bossk breaks them open.
