How much fighter packs?

By KaLeu, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

Hy,

I'm new to the game and still building up my fleet since christmas so that's not depleting my purse too fast...

Reading through the posts I noticed a lot of squadron builds with 8 A-Wings or 8 TIE Bombers, meaning they would use 4 fighter packs or even 4 firesprays plus Boba Fett for a total of 5 Rogues and Villians packs.

Till now i was planning on getting 2 from every model and each fighter pack (i will provide for both players till i can convince one of my friends to get in as well) but it seems that a lot of builds nowadays are swarms of one kind or the other.

So should i already try to specialise on one or two types of ships or is an even buy still useful?

I swear I'm not buying more than ONE Rogues and Villains pack, but I have 6 packs of the fighters for each side. Make some fleet lists and see what floats your boat and pick up another pack every now and then.

2 of each squadron pack to start is probably wise.

Past that you get diminishing returns, with some exceptions that you can then build into later if you find the prospect of fielding a bunch of one type of squadron appealing.

2 of squad and two rogues, plus to base sets........so many tie fighters

I've got two of each. That seems to be plenty. You'll see a few lists with more than 4 of any of the fighters contained in those packs, but not very many. You also get 4 X-wings and 6 Ties in the start set, which means you're at 10 Ties after 2 Imperial Fighter packs. My sense is that the game also comes up against people's pocketbooks at some point, and we all have to ask what is reasonable to buy. My sense is that if you cannot build it with 2 fighter packs each, you probably shouldn't be fielding it.

Not to mention if you decide to play higher point battles I know I'd love to put 1000 points on the table

I have been always been a hoard type player. I like to run all A-wings, all YT2400's or whatever. Just easier for me to keep track of. So I knew I needed multiple sets. I bought a few YT-2400 from ebay. I split a R&V pack with some friends. You can also buy fighters individually form Ebay. 2 sets of fighters around $5. Nothing says you have to have 10 Awings the first time you play. I plan on playing for a while. Buying a fighter pack every once in while doesn't seem to bad to me.

I think that it's sufficient for most to get two of each fighter pack and one rogues and villains.

If, after that, you decided that you really want more of a certain fighter type, then buy more.

I wouldn't be surprised if we saw an aces pack or similar in the future, with more of the same models.

I suggest buying one of each and playing a few games - you can certainly get a buddy and proxy ones you don't have until you have a better idea of what you want.

Plus, with a bit of practice mixed fighter builds are very effective, and super cool looking on the table. It's a bit easier to do as Rebels since their squadrons are more multirole capable...

I would love to try things like 8 A-Wings, but the cost would be exorbitant. It's in no way necessary to use such lists. One thing to note is that a lot of people play Vassal games online and in Vassal, they can obviously try things without consideration of cost. So you may be seeing lists that people only play online and at the table-top, they will play something different.
