Finding a home for 'Red Ace'

By Nyxen, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So I've been toying around with the mid-pilot skill T-70 aces, and as a friend of mine likes to say, for 2 points more you can have Poe Dameron filling the same role, and easily doing it better. In what list is the 2 points worth more elsewhere?

The current build I've settled on for this pilot is the standard

R2-D2

Comm Relay

Autothrusters

Though dropping the Comm Relay gets you the points for Poe and VI on him, and having an optimized double regen combo leaves you with only 25 points (which to be fair, the rebels have some great options in)

In any rate, how do you guys end up using Red Ace?

That is how I would field Red Ace (too bad she cannot take an EPT or I would chuck Juke on her too).

Poe + Red Ace leaves you points for a Stresshog or a lean-ish A-wing. Too bad you can't quite fit a decent Kyle + Jan combo in there as they would really boost the 2 T70s.

Don't like AT on RedAce as makes him more expensive and not needed to be that expensive i think :)

Yes you can :)
You can Drop Predator in favor of VI and AT if you like ;)
Moldy is there for first turns to fly slow and get some Focus in to have reserve :)

I have used him a few different ways, but most prominently my "Can you beat this" list. If you can put out enough damage to kill it quickly, you likely have a viable list against the local meta.

Red Ace with R2D2, Relay, integrated

Jake and Tycho with refit, PTL, Title, Juke, Thrusters

Not super offensive, but it has stupidly good staying power if your greens are even average.

A guy at my LGS is running Red Ace alongside 2 Wardens w/ TLT and tactician. I ran a few different YV-666 lists against it and just couldn't quite get the firepower to take this list out.

@Poe vs Red Ace: Why not both?

A friend of mine played this list and it was a real pain:

Poe Dameron (31)
Lone Wolf (2)
R5-P9 (3)
Autothrusters (2)

Gold Squadron Pilot (18)
Twin Laser Turret (6)
R3-A2 (2)
BTL-A4 Y-Wing (0)

Comm Relay (3)

I think, he played Integrated Astromech simply to make room for a stresshog. But you don't even need Autothrusters, because Red Ace basically negates two damge per turn without even rolling any evade results.

Red Ace is a workhorse. With the standard 38pt build, you can expect him to plink away at non-arc dodging, low agility targets, all game long without blowing up and costing you 38 points.

In my opinion, Red Ace is the go to ship of you're looking for a Rebel that can survive, regenerate, fly unpredictably and still deal some damage. The only thing holding her back (for some reason I always refer to Red Ace as a her) is the lack of an EPT, but that would possibly make her too powerful. I always run AT, but it doesn't get used that often, or against a TLT it didn't change the outcome.

One of the keys for me is to not always regenerate a lost shield, that's often a great time to catch the opponent off guard. I love pulling a talon roll when they think I'm going to go green.

I also like R7-T1 on "Blue Ace" - great for repositioning on a flanker and can hit hard with that TL.

Too bad Red Ace does not have an EPT.

Now Blue Ace benefits from R2-D6 because then he can take Predator and use those sweet Boosts to flank and arc dodge while retaining an attack modifier for one point more without being committed to the target who is looking at him. He can also just take a Focus + Pred and sting the enemy more reliably if he's in a good position already (like out of arc, negating R7-T1).

OOps, sorry about that. I missed the droid.

I've really been liking flying Red Ace and Poe together. Red Ace doesn't necessarily need Autothrusters like Poe does.

Stresshog (Gold with BTL-A4 Title, R3-A2 and TLT)

Two regeneration ships with different mechanics and tactics. One carries the evade and picks one up when needed. The other arc-dodges around and holds focus for regen when needed.

Flies at PS6 across the board. Incredibly resilient to stress. Saves most focus results for the defense, while Dutch passes out Target Locks like candy. Deadly, deadly candy.
