Dengar Crew w/ Predator EPT?

By heychadwick, in X-Wing

So, I haven't heard this mentioned on any podcast yet. I haven't seen it in a post, but there have been A LOT of posts about this. I have not heard anyone mention this combo yet. Forgive me if someone already has.

So....Dengar lets you get a re-roll, and two for mid-high PS.

Predator lets you get a re-roll, and two for low PS.

That means you are looking at 3 re-rolls a turn! OK....you want action economy? How about them apples?!? It would mean you can do almost anything with your action instead of modifying your dice. You can preposition, or Gonk, or....maybe even Focus to help out on the damage.

Which ships can take this?

- Named Firesprays

- Named G-1A Misthunter

- All Jumpmasters

- Named HWK-290

Just thinking here:

Zuckus = Get an extra attack die and give them an extra defense die. OK...you get to re-roll 3 dice a turn! Why not? Perfect combo. Spend your action on Evade or Focus for offense or defense.

Manaroo = Give all your tokens to another ship. Oh, but you need something yourself? Boom! 3 dice modification. This means you are a super buffer of other ships while not really giving up your own feasibility. Really not a bad option.

Emon = Many of the good bombs require an action to drop. Now you can drop them and still be effective in combat!

Kath Scarlet = Who doesn't want all those re-rolls, especially with bonus dice out the rear? You can spend your action doing an Evade to stay alive longer!

HWK's = OK...not the best set up, but you sure will get to re-roll those TLT shots!

The consensus seemed to be that the combo suffered from diminishing returns too much to be worth 6 points and two slots in an earlier thread.

Minor quibble: Dengar doesn't care about PS. He cares about uniqueness. That means you'll only get 2 dice against higher PS generics.

That does mean that with Mux around you can reroll four dice against PS0 uniques.

There's a reason people don't run predator on scum Boba. Redundancy, especially for three points, is not the best way to spend those points.

Costs WAY too much to essentially give you the same effect as Push the Limit. Boost or focus and same rerolls as a target lock. Benefit being that the rerolls aren't stuck to who you target lock if you find a better target. And how often do you REALLY need to reroll three dice. Sure, you can whiff completely on four reds, but you only have a 6% chance to roll zero hits in that case, or less than one percent if you have a focus token. Way too many points for an insurance policy of any kind, and particularly one that occurs less than once in ten attacks.

Ahhh.....thanks for the link to the old thread. I missed that one. Sorry.

Uniqueness. I keep forgetting that. Yeah, with Mux he would make someone hurt!

I still think about any of the Jumpmasters. It can be really good. For one, you can Barrel Roll somewhere to be really annoying. That can be pretty good for a lot of Jumpmasters. I do think about the base generic, though. Give him Anti-Pursuit Lasers, as well, and he can be a real pain in the butt! Don't know where he's going to go and he can BR, as well. Make him an annoying blocker.

Uboat Jumpmaster works, too. Load up on Proton Torpedoes and use TL to fire. Then, you can adjust the dice quite a bit.

Doing that has worked well for me. I find I still normally trigger my Predator rerolls even with his ability. His attacks become very reliable.

You forgot Bossk YV-666

I thought you were only allowed to reroll dice once.

Dengar is reaally good, but I think that's because he can replace Predator to allow a ship to still take another EPT. I'd probably never pair them together (unless you have the world's worst dice, that are like weighted to roll exclusively blanks). I think that crew Dengar outright replaces the first K-4 Droid in pretty much every list that isn't running pilot Dengar, except in rare corner cases where the TL is for ordinance.

You can reroll each die once. You can use multiple effects that grant rerolls.

Scum Fett with Predator and one enemy ship at range one is shooting at a PS6 enemy ship. Fett can use his ability to reroll one of his red dice and he can use Predator to reroll a second die.

I've been running both on Zuckuss where I'm rolling 4-5 dice, and can pretty much always use his ability since I have at least rerolls and frequently both rerolls and focus vs whatever my opponent might have.

HLC Kath is really the only case I can see for running both Predator and Dengar on the same ship, as she can then roll at least four dice at all ranges, with three rerolls while fighting anything but PS3+ generics, and can spend her actions on defense.

However, that's also 51 points, and doesn't even include the cost of Illicits or Modifications.

Get off the 40K juice.
