I really like mixing it up every couple of games and try to limit myself in games. I was thinking about trying to fly the worst ships in the game and really trying to make it work and fly well. I am not talking specific pilots but just the ships. and yes I would count the outer rim smuggler as a different ship than the yt-1300, because the only thing the same is the dial. I was wondering what are the worst 3 ships on the rebels faction?
Playing with the not as good as other ships
I feel that the worst Rebel ship right now is the good old T-65 X-Wing. But the Outer Rim Smuggler YT-1300 and the Rebel Operative HWK have pretty poor reputations. Here are some squad ideas:
Block Party (100 points)
2x Outer Rim Smuggler + Anti-Pursuit Lasers
Wild Space Fringer + Anti-Pursuit Lasers
Hawk Party (100 points)
3x Rebel Operative + Twin Laser Turret
Blue Squadron Pilot
Bandit Squadron Pilot
Edited by DagobahDaveThe ORS is a special kind of overpriced, but it's got a good suite of upgrade slots to become truly strange.
Intel Agent
Navigator
Anti-Pursuit Lasers
But, yeah, the (Rebel) HWK is still worse than the T-65. By a lot. Even with TLTs in the picture.
The thing about the hawk is that its not useless, it has good upgrade slots. It's hampered by its 1 attack dice essentially forcing you to take expensive turret which automatically makes it overcosted. If you can live with that you still have the worst dial in the game to overcome. It's slow, sluggish to turn and without K turn you are once again forceed to take the turret upgrade.
The named pilots for rebel aren't bad, in fact Jan Ors has a fantastic ability that synergises well with others, however once kitted out is usually a third of your squad points. For that investment it's just too fragile and struggles to pull its weight offensively.
Hwk 290 are good if playing 150+ pts, and very good in Epic. Equip a TLT in a Agi 2 ship and start kicking !!! I think that the Hwk is an Epic Ship. As House Rule we modified a little it to make it cheaper, but "by the book" it is a good Epic ship
The more you experiment with the different ships and pilots, the more you learn about the game. It's worth giving everything a try.
I enjoy playing tie punisher, but it really soaks up points to make it worth using, and by then it becomes a big target that can't dodge and dies easily. It's great fun those few times you do get to unload a face full of ordnance at the enemy, but more often it dies with unspent missiles etc.
Apart from my many games using Rhymer and generic Punishers and even Scyks + Bossk ... while I better should get some practice with my competitive lists,
I recently played with 3 x Blues and Luke with Lone Wolf and R2-D2 ... I did really enjoy Luke who was able to stay in the game as last survivor and wreck the remaining opposing ship - which happened to be Soontir.

I still maintain that the rebel HWK's have their uses (even if i do call them sh*thawks - as a trailer park boys reference).
Roarks making someone PS12 in combat is insanely useful for getting that blountmissile off.
The hawk is a support ship. It was never meant to pull it's weight offensively. I don't think it is overcosted either. I think it on the low side to allow for a turret being an auto include.
Take three knaves.
I've thought about:
Knave Squadron Pilot (27)
Advanced Sensors (3)
Flechette Torpedoes (2)
Targeting Astromech (2)

When you K-turn you can pull a TL + Focus. You can throw Guidance Chips on the two with Flechettes. I don't think it super great, but I don't think its that bad either. I just need two more E-wings.
The hilarious thing is is that in a vacuum of 100 points games, sure a lot of ships are above or below par.
Take things to epic and the rules suddenly change. Soontir fel for example sucks on higher point games, but defenders, x-wings and generic e-wings actually start getting really good.

I could accept the low attack power if it had either better durability (extra shield?) or better manoeuvre options. The combination of all 3 leaves it in a poor position. If it wasn't for the excellent named pilot skills it would be a complete waste.
I was just thinking I wanted to challenge someone to a B list game. I want to play a bunch of those Tie Fighter Pilots and Tie FO Pilots that aren't amazing.
Zeta Ace = Use the 2 range for Barrel Roll - I want to try that for giggles!
Epsilon Ace = PS 12 until damaged!
Chaser = Grab a used Focus token
Scourge = If they are damaged, roll an extra die
Winged Gundark - Hit turns to crit at R1
I'd love to fly these guys with a few other ones I haven't flown in a while. Just try it out and see how it goes. It would have to be against someone else's B list, though.
I also love to take things that people say are broken and try to make good uses for them. I've even used Gemmer and Expose before, but it just didn't work. Almost one shotted a Tie Interceptor, though, but he had Hull Upgrade.

The only b-list pilot you have is winged gundark, and being a ps5 tie fighter, he's not going to bring down the list or anything.I was just thinking I wanted to challenge someone to a B list game. I want to play a bunch of those Tie Fighter Pilots and Tie FO Pilots that aren't amazing.

Well.....I kind of disagree. To me, there is uber competitive play that only allows a few ships. Then there is the next tier of ships that are not bad. Sub-par brings up the rear. I don't think you would see many of the pilots I listed in a serious Store Championship list. They aren't bad, but they aren't "the best".
I've never heard of anyone using Zeta Ace, even in casual games. What's been your experience?
I am using Zeta Ace in casual games and looking to bring him to tourney.
He's 1 pt more expensive compared to Omega Sq Pilot and gets 1 extra PS plus that awesome barrel roll. The repositioning capability it offers is just amazing.
Caught red ace by surprise at R1 by doing 1 Hard Turn and barrel rolling. against low-PS pilots or even aces, he can roll out of arc effortlessly. I've stressed out a few stresshog players so bad they didn't even get a shot at him at all. By all means, give him a try with Comm Relay and EPT of choice (Juke or outmaneuver, preferably). He won't disappoint. I haven't tried this personally, but I bet PTL + EU will make him the craziest arc dodger ever known to low ps generics.
Edited by GrivoireZeta Ace is great. 1 more point than an Omega Squadron Pilot for a PS 5 FO is decent, and the extr a distance makes barrel roll very powerful. It's as if Lt. Lorrie had an EPT and didn't stress himself when he used his ability.
Scourge is also solid, it's just his preferred prey is in hiding due to TLTs. Chaser and Epsilon Ace aren't as great because they lack EPTs or a way to push damage through, but even they're not in the same league as Winged Gundark (Who just looks awful next to the five other original Tie Pilots, all of whom have awesome abilities).
If Lorrir has an EPT and no stress, these two will be the imperial acrobatic Air Show Masters. But too bad Lorrir is rather dead on arrival guy alongside his poor friend Kir Kanos.
