Take it to the Tomax, to Maximize Your Stopping Power!

By Jisforjets, in X-Wing

I have been working around the 2 PS missiles plus archetype. It has been working very well. I usually drop a ship of my choice at the start of the game. Then the game turns in to my 85 points versus their 75 or less. Yes, this also works exceedingly well against tie swarms.

Having only one test game, and many games with the general archetype, I feel that a particular Tomax build may work as a third ship.

Tomax

Fleet officer

Ept of your choice crack/cool hand/wired/etc.

Tomax buys your 2 aces a focus on top of their typical token milieu. This lets Vader have a much more aolid first round, him being able to target lock evade and have a focus. Inquisitor can triple dip like Vader with Tomax assist. Tomax is also no slouch in with crackshot and Kallus for helping get that last point of damage through on a ship. I believe a non Vader tie advance could work well here, not having to suffer the no defensive action penalty for acquiring an ATC target lock is quite nice.

I am not sure how many other ships benefit significantly from a focus, to the point of meaningfully damaging an opponents squad. I can also concieve of a 4 ship build working with this Tomax load out, being able to meet my personal requirement of destroying a stressbot in the first exchange.

Any tips for ships that can bring the bag of hammers neccessary to maximize the alpha strike alongside Tomax?

VI/PTL Juno would make an excellent partner for Tomax, imho.

If I were running an ordnanceless Fleet Officer Tomax I think I would run him in one of two ways: Either as a fighter with Crack Shot and Kallus, or as a dedicated support ship with Cool Hand and Tactician.

I can't wait to try a cool hand Tomax paired with Rexlar, so you finally have a decent way of getting Rex 2 focuses per round (one from Tomax and one from Rex's action(s). Add in another PS8+ ace and you've got two ships who can fire before Rex to strip shields, and then Rex can lay on some damage and flip all the cards face up. ;)

The Inquisitor seems to fit pretty well pointswise. If you hive him Juke you can force the target to spend its focus before Rexler fires.

More of this thread over here.

I guess I am clueless here, but I don't understand the point of a tomax without ordnance. seems to me that he was designed to rain death in the form of torps and missles.

Someone is going to have to speak slow and use small words and break this down for me.

Would it ever be worth it to have tomax drive a tie shuttle?

Would you be better off with a gamma squad veteran with something like squad leader and fleet officer. using tomax in this way seems like a waste of points to me. Like I said, show me the error of my thinking please

bascially you Squad Leader then cool hand from the stress so you can give out two foci, one of which can be to yourself, then add an evade to you modifications, then if you get stressed by another means (r3A2 ect) and you NEED TO STAY ALIVE you can do it again, while you can only do that once per game if it keeps you alive and being a nuisance its a great benefit.

I gotta agree with Mr. Fish, here. IMO any Tomax build should start:

Tomax

Crack Shot

Extra Munitions

Guidance Chips

And then flavor missiles/bombs/torpedoes to taste from there. The ability just seems like such a waste if you don't maximize it with the best discard EPT available, and that seems like a waste if you don't maximize Tomax's offensive potential.

TIE Shuttles can't take LRS. They don't meet the requirements of having both Torpedo and Missile slots. If you are putting Fleet Officer and Cool Hand on Tomax, he kind of needs MKII Engines.

Getting and holding TLs for Vessery seems like it would be a problem. Tomax is going to need to choose between taking a TL or using Fleet Officer in the rounds when those extra tokens are probably the most needed. I think I'd rather save some points on Tomax and get Brath PTL or Predator and get Lone Wolf or Crackshot for Vessery. Sprinkle TIE MKII Engines around with the spare points.
