What...Interesting...Squads Did You Build as a Beginner?

By AdmiralThrawn, in X-Wing

My first tournament list. I came in right when the meta was shifting away from swarms after wave 3. I didnt realize that until that day.

X-Wing: Rookie Pilot (21)

R2 Astromech (1)

X-Wing: Rookie Pilot (21)

R2 Astromech (1)

A-Wing: Green Squadron Pilot (19)

Push The Limit (3)

Assault Missiles (5)

My very first build was an 'alpha strike wedge' with advanced proton torpedos, marksmanship, and Dutch yander with ion cannon turret and seismic charges and some filler.

The idea was to use p rockets and wedges ability to make a guaranteed 4 hits and a crit.

I lost...bad. my friend used ACD whisper with a mini tie swarm

Darth Vader with EH for that double barrel roll goodness back before the FAQ. Howlrunner with squad leader. Not as many mistakes could be made back in wave 1.

Wedge with marksmanship and r2d2,out rim smuggler, jake farrel with push the limit wired from what I remember

I'm a fan of Vader and 2 tie fighter's.

I made a 60 pt imp boba. I'll stop there.....

You will laugh, Paragoomba Slayer won a store championship with a build that featured ~60 points of imperial Boba.

My first list ever featured Tactician B-Wings, Roark Garnet, and a Prototype A-Wing, it did okay, but obviously Roark with low PS ships is a luke warm Phantom counter at best, which he was intended to be, so the list failed to achieve what I wanted it to.

Desperately tried to make a Z-95 munitions swarm work.

So I will Jabba-laugh extra hard if Guidance Chips actually makes that archetype successful.

Three B-wings, and a Y with an ICT is definitely up there. Not so much for the list itself in how I tried to use it. Face first joust toward a TIE swarm. B-wings got melted within a couple of turns, to virtually no losses for the TIEs. The Y-wing literally just turned around and ran, shooting anything that got into range of it's ass.

Also, Etahn with a Z mini-swarm. I so badly wanted this to work. The problem isn't so much that the concept didn't work, but that the Zs had to work so hard to make it work, they ended up as balls of flame, rather than glorious crit dealers.

One day I'll get Etahn to be relevant outside of epic...

In my first game, I equiped a B wing with...R2D2. Last round, just before winning, the other guy look at my superb Blue Squadron... " I can not see a droid in the ship "... But R2D2 B wing was not a bad idea vs two Academy...

Wedge + R2-F2 + Expose
Luke Skywalker
Gold Squadron Y-wing
Gold Squadron Y-wing

One of my earliest lists involved Lando, Dutch, and a rookie pilot. Before that I hardly played 100 pt. matches, but I think I may have played Han + 2 rookies. I'd still like to make the Lando/Dutch combo work...

I ran Turr Phennir with VI, 2 royal guards with PTL, and Lt. Lorrir to my first tournament, the Imdaar Alpha event. I cringe just thinking about that list in today's meta.

My early squads typically involved Soontir Fel, Turr Phennir and a couple of TIE Fighters or Kath Scarlet. Eventually I turned to the Lambda, and ran a variety of builds, from Doom to Buzzsaw to Jendon. Nothing really awful, I think, but pre-Autothrusters I got pretty sick of playing Interceptors against twin pancakes.

My first tournament list back then where I didn't had enough Imperial ships to make a 100 points list:

Han Solo

+ Engine Upgrade

+ Expose

+ Gunner

+ Chewy

Luke

+ Proton Torps

+ R2 D2

+ Veteran Instincts

I used the Lambda a lot. Not that there's anything wrong with the Lambda, but as a new player I made things much harder for me than they needed to be.

I think my first list was something like:

Omicron Group Pilot: Advanced Sensors, Weapons Engineer, Heavy Laser Cannon

Rexler Brath: Heavy Laser Cannon, something else maybe

2x Academy Ties

This due mainly to these being the only ships I had. Didn't quite work out for me.

I do know someone who put Munitions Failsafe on Lieutenant Blount.

Still my favourite combo in X-wing.

I think you learn a lot about manouvering by limiting yourself to bad dials and little to no repositioning. Forces you to plan ahead right from the beginning.

I did! I got pretty good at getting some work done with the Lambda (a skill that I haven't used in a while). I brought a barely similar list to a tournament about 4 months later and ended up 4th of ~15. Not bad if you ask me. :)

Playing X-Wing has been a journey, and this thread is awesome because it's reminded me of my humble beginnings. Good times!

I ran

Wedge

Luke

Dutch

Gray Squad Y Wing

Of course that was all that was out when I started playing.

I once used Saboteur.

The end.

pre advanced fix 4Xtempest...

For a long time, I flew 2 Y-Wings with Ion Turrets and 2 Rookie Pilots with Proton Torpedos. As time went on, I swapped the rookies for Biggs and Wedge.

My first tournament list:

Keyan - HLC, PTL, Advanced Sensors, E2 & Lando

Garven

Biggs - R2F2

Went 1-2 in the end. My love of B-Wings has been there ever since.

My first list was 4x Tie Advanced with cluster missiles. Ah, wave 1.

I loved Dutch for the first several waves. Lots of Dutch, Wedge, Biggs.
