What...Interesting...Squads Did You Build as a Beginner?

By AdmiralThrawn, in X-Wing

So I was going through an old list building word document from 2013 (around the time when I just has two cores, an interceptor, and an x wing expansion, about to buy all the other ships) when I discovered to my delight this lovely gem:

+Major Rhymer + Advanced Proton Torpedoes + Homing Missiles + Homing Missiles + Veteran Instincts + Proton Bombs + Stealth Device (51)

+Captain Jonus + Advanced Proton Torpedoes + Homing Missiles + Assault Missiles + Push the Limit + Proton Bombs + Stealth Device (49)

Ah, ignorance is bliss. As you might expect, I figured out how incredibly stupid and impractical this list was when I finally got my tie bombers.

What...interesting...mistakes did you all make as a beginner attempting to build your first squads?

Pretty much just loading up on as many upgrades as possible for the hell of it. I remember too when I got the Bomber, I was so excited by the number of upgrade icons it had. Sadly of course, as it turned out, most of them were redundant and even the ones that weren't were for lackluster ordnance.

I was really obsessed with making marksmanship work on Corran. Gave him Biggs. Did all kinds of silliness.

Jan Ors with Ion Cannon Turret, Nien Numb and Recon Specialist.

Well, let's see, I started playing a month ago so....

Definitely builds with the Decimator and Tactical Jammer. I was hoping I could use it as a "riot shield" for two RGP squints.

I didn't quite understand how the movement mechanics worked yet.

I've never really built any naive lists, but sometimes I've done stuff because it's so stupid. Like running Wedge with Opportunist together with VI Wes and Jan. Just to get to throw six dice at something at range 1 while reducing it's agility by one as well. The one game where I used it I actually got to hit Howlie with it at the end of the game. She did not stand a chance ^^

The silliest list I've run is probably Corran with PtL, R2, APT, FCS, SD and Etahn with PtL, R2, APT, Sensor Jammer, SD

Believe it or not, I've actually won games with it, though it feels strange to field just two small ships.

Etahn, r5p9

Airen cracken, swarm tactics

Not actually a terrible list. But not good enough.

I... And I hate to admit this now... but I... How do you say this...?

God... This is embarrassing...

Not sure how many on this forum would make such a ... mistake, but...

I built lists because they looked fun and probably not super practical or efficient. They just seemed... you know... Star Warsy.

I swear... I had NO IDEA that there was such a thing as a META I was supposed to follow.

Thank you. Thank you, my fellow XWM fans for allowing me to get that off my chest

I made a 60 pt imp boba. I'll stop there.....

I ran a lot of A-wing swarms. It did not go well.

I think my first list was Han, Biggs and a Rookie. I have no idea what upgrades I ran. That only leaves you 8 points to play with. I thought they'll have to shoot Biggs and Han can just do Han things. Well little did I know how difficult it was to keep those ships in formation properly.

I put munitions fail safe on Fel's Wrath once.

Expose on Kath Scarlet (SnV). That 6 damage range 1 360 no scope was brilliant for awhile.

I once saw a rookie put a targeting computer on an x wing....

They tended to involve X-wings or Defenders.

The irony is not lost on me.

Yep.... I tried TIE bomber B-52 loadout, too, but I was also obsessed with Mauler Mithel the Marksman. I will say it was excellent preparation for donut hole hoovering.

My very first list was for my first tournament, which was the first real people I'd ever played (not including a rather uninterested wife who played the intro demo with me).

Rexler Brath, VI, HLC

Backstabber

3x Obsidian Squadron Pilots

I really like Soontir Fel, and Mini-Tie Swarms. Also, I liked having PS advantage, so I made this:

I soon started running Crakshot miniswarm instead, hehe.

Idea:

Show up to someplace new, bring some obnoxious list like this, and pretend to be new at the game and try to sweep. Strategically "forget" things when it doesn't matter a lot and make it known to your opponent, say that the Imperial player has the initiative by default, bring the 6 old asteroids to every game with an old damage deck, and repeatedly ask your opponent if asteroids give you stress, right?

Not a squad this bad, but something like VI Brobots that have Proton Bombs instead of cannons or something. Or like Palp Aces, but with Marksmanship and Expose. something that you could actually do well with that's just has a tinge of sub-optimal.

It's hard to come up with a squad that appears to be a blatant noob trash squadron that actually turns out to be somewhat playable. I mean you could do this with any B- list really, just bring quad Sigma and pretend to be new.

One of my first tournaments involved Jek porkins. With R7-T1. This did not go well.

I haven't changed too much since I started. I still fly my Rebel Aces. It's mostly HOW I fly them. I still use Luke and Corran a lot.

I'm planning to run glass cannon build with Serissu + 3 Cartel Spacer, all with HLCs.

Yesterday I ran 2 bombing run K-Wings with Autoblaster turret and Gemmer Sojan with Predator.

If that's not enough, see my sig. I love running stupid lists. But I'll try my best to deliver a game that is worth my opponent's time. Often times I wreaked havoc the lists that have been carefully built by my friends.

The K-Wings alternate their Conner Nets to safely escort a SuperFat han to the outer rim... ;)

Back in 2013 right after the wave 2 release, I put together a list featuring a fully loaded Lando and Wedge. I think the list revolved around having Lando give Wedge extra actions so he can fire off Proton Torps and hopefully one-shot TIEs. I lost all but one game in the tournament I played in, as expected, but it was pretty fun.
