Your own upgrade card

By The Penguin UK, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum - I figured this or Off-Topic.

Me and some guys were discussing the new Boba Fett card, and how the World Champ got to create new upgrade cards. At the same time, we had discussed how (in our local club meta anyway), there needs to be something to bump up the unnamed pilots, as we mostly run aces/big ships.

This got me thinking about a possible card for LOW PS pilots, after I made the joke about 'blind panic', the idea about a pilot completely losing it as he is chased down by a superior foe. Just wondered what you thought of the following...

Blind Panic - EPT (3 pts)

May only be taken by a PS2 or less pilot WITHOUT the EPT skill.

Once per game, after you have been nominated as the target of an attack, you may turn over this card. You automatically evade and/or ignore all hits from the subsequent attack, and any additional effects.

After the attack, receive one stress. You opponent may plan this ship's maneauver dial in the next round.

Possibly OP, possibly UP - certainly situational (good to waste an opponents rockets or glitterstim maybe). But, the image made me laugh and I just thought I'd share it to see what you thought about it.

Cheers,

PUK

(FWIW I wouldn't have felt this topic was out of place in the main forum.)

It's funny, but I can't see it ever getting used. Who would spend three points to save a low-skill generic from one attack at the cost of taking them out of the fight for at least another turn? I don't know that I would think it was undercosted even at zero points.

Never even saw the main forum - can you believe it! Would delete the topic if I could find a button to do so - Sorry!

"Your Own Upgrade Card" put me in mind of upgrade cards that represent ourselves. Mine would be "While defending, if in the Compare Dice Results step you have zero evade results, hurl your dice across the room to add one evade result. Then gain a stress token." That sounds about right.

A one use card that lets you force an attack to miss in return for generating a stress sounds fair (especially if it is limited to pilots that are PS 2 or less).

Allowing the opponent to set the dial seems like it is a bit too much of a drawback, especially since the opponent could run your ship off the board.

Maybe something along the lines of "While defending against an attack, if you would be destroyed, you may treat your PS as equal to the attacker's until the end of the current round" as a 1 or 2 point upgrade that can not be taken by unique pilots. It's more or less Fel Wrath's ability but it might be more useful on a lower PS pilot or one that can carry ordnance.

Mine would be "if you designed this list only because you liked the characters, as opposed to having a competitive list, discard this card to use one action twice in the same round. Do not gain any stress because you really dont care if you lose."

(In my head, I would be allowed to roll the dice for the Lando crew card twice)

A 0 point elite talent with "Any time you would roll dice when neither attacking or defending, you may discard a blue target-lock token to change their results to any combination of results".

Lando, Saboteur, R5-D8, and R5-K6 are happy.
Porkins is still pretty okay with things, even though he's kind of sad that he can't take it with Push the Limit.

Enemy Mines, Asteroids, and certain Critical effects are fairly annoyed.

If you change it to "Friendly ships at Range 1" and "Receive a Stress Token" rather than "You" and "Discard a blue target-lock token", it works very well as a Pilot Ability.

I'd run that. I'd run it so hard

We need a "Bat-**** Lucky" EPT...

Spend 3 points on an upgrade to completely negate a shot? That is extremely strong even if it gives you a Stress. Allowing the opponent (who triggered it?) to set your dial is a tough pill to swallow but if you consider how that would allow a ship that would otherwise DIE to stay around and likely get it's shot off I'm thinking it would be too good.

I mean under normal circumstances you may never want to put your ace right in the gunsights of an opposing ship but if you have a very high likelihood of destroying that ship before it could return fire you may consider it. Now with this card you'd never see that happen because now the Ace is certain NOT to destroy the enemy while the enemy will get to return fire; so what if the ship could be screwed next turn because it was supposed to be DEAD and may even have taken out an enemy in the process.

Anyone ever feel it was worth the risk to drive Fel to R1 in front of a Doomshuttle with the intent on taking it out before it can cause any more harm? With the proposed upgrade that just became absolute suicide as there would be no way of taking it out yet you'd be certain to get a facefull of return fire for your trouble.

Also consider how the stressed ship now gives fewer maneuver choices. If the maneuver is set during the PLANning stage you'd better believe it is getting set to RED maneuver to go with the Stress it has allowing me to see what happens before setting the dial when it actually moves.

A cute idea but one that would be much more complicated to introduce and actually have function as intended. Maybe if it also added a Disabled Weapons token to the ship that would help negate the above situations but issues would still remain.
