Foldable wings attack shuttle?

By Baak, in X-Wing

I was looking at the model for the attack shuttle and was wondering if it is possible that it will have wings that fold, like the lambda shuttle. Looking closely at the model, it looks like there are two hinged joints at the wings. Offcourse they could be there just for asthetics and detail, but how awesome would it be if you can actually fold in the wings. Perhaps you even need to, to dock it into the ghost :)

Not going to happen*. They heavily advertised that on the Lambda. And I would argue the primary purpose was for storage. There is no visible hinge, and the wing is too thin to be hiding it internally.

*Someone in the mod community will make it work. And it'll likely dock into the Ghost.

You'd have to modify it yourself.

The shuttle's wings have the two articulated segments. It's certainly possible to create a toy spaceship with that kind of thing, and make it dockable with the ghost.

But I don't think there's a way to (inexpensively) make the wing segments stiff enough that they wouldn't be floppy and annoying while actually playing the tabletop miniatures game. The Lambda shuttle is a much bigger model by comparison, and only has the single ariculating joint. There's also a very practical reason to articulate the Lambda's wings: they make it waaay easier to package and store.

Yeah, the Lambda could do it because it had enough internal space for all the structure to be made out of injection moulded plastic. There's no way to easily do that for a mini this small. Hinging it would be more than possible, but I'd have to do it with brass rod or similar as the hinge like I did my StarViper..

I think the Ghost has a Phantom docked onto it.

Someone with modding skills and too much time and $$$ will find a way to fold the wings and dock. I want to try, but I lack that level of skill.

I guess it would be kinda hard (and perhaps expensive) to pull of, but it would be a very awesome surprise if they did fold!

They havent revealed if the ship is docked either yet (tough its likely its part of the mold) perhaps they are keeping this information as a bonus, just like some upgrade cards like Thermal detonator and Overclocked agromech.

Untill the boat comes and we know for sure, I keep my hopes up for foldable awesomness :)

I mean I think the Ghost model, has an attached phantom as part of the model, not the Phantom model.

The other thing is unless you're incredibly precise having a 'docking and folding' shuttle is going to mean its either quite a loose fit and therefore likely to just fall out during a game... .or you make it tight enough to be held in by friction and in that case you're going to need to repaint it every other game as its going to wear the paint off.

TBH its an 'abstract' gaming piece, if you want one that docks by a lego or 3" action figure one as its really beyond the scope or need of the game IMO

This is what magnets are for ;)

And i was going to say you could magnetise it but again its so much effort for something that doesnt actually need doing.

Personally i think magnetised ships in general look great for photoshoots but look silly most the time in games unless you're constantly adjusting them to reflect the last manouvre

Something i've never felt the need to do myself, i've used magnets before for quick 'weapon swap options' on 40k support weapons and dreads but i personally dont feel the need to use them in xwing, i can see why others like it but my mate magnetises his and it always seem more hassle to do and adjust and stop certain ships overbalancing to justify any visual improvement or storage improvement.

So you know a magnetised ghost shuttle, the point still stands, its an abstract playing piece i cant see the need.

To me its like putting rotating turrets on 1/300 scale micro armour tanks. Nice but not really neccessary

I bet you mel's miniatures will have a solution after it is released. Maybe a whole separate phantom, or maybe just the wings that you can replace. I'd love to have a second Ghost, with a hole cut out to allow the docking.

I know. My comment still stands. LOL

Easy enough to build a hinge in a 3d printed model. but probably prohibitively expensive for FFGs mass production

There is some guy on here that made movable X-Wing S-Foils. Surely if that can be done, hinging the wings of that thing can.

some of us model maker folk do enjoy a challenge :3
