System Open- disappointed in organizers

By dragegutt21, in X-Wing Organized Play

I was looking at the System Open tournaments, trying to see if I wanted to do some travelling in Europe. Sadly, some of the organizers haven't done all that much to make it easy, and some of the organizers I have some doubts about.

The Kashyyk tournament in Italy for instance. The organizers there haven't had an X-Wing tournament at all, they have only held some demos in december 2015. They have a lot of Netrunner and Conquest tournaments though. And the Kashyyk event has still not been logged in their events calendar: http://www.giochiuniti.it/index.php?option=com_jeeventcalendar&view=event〈=it. And their page is Italian only, nor making it easy to find info.

The Jakku tournament in France is held at an Star Wars convention, at the end of April, http://leblog.genstarwars.com/sadly the page is in all french. I mean ALL in french, even their "news in english"-page is in french: http://www.genstarwars.com/blog2/category/news-in-english/. Trying to buy tickets, I am taken to a page where I can choose spanish or french. Searching for X-Wing on that page I find that I can buy a starter, an X-Wing or a T-70 as well as dice and sleeves, no tournaments. This is a tournaments only two months away, and NO info!

The Endor tournament in Warzaw, Poland, I had to use some google-fu to find, no info on location or possibilities for attending. One of Europes 8 largest tournaments, two months away, no info. http://galakta.pl/bitwa-o-endor-system-open-2016/

The Yavin in Birmingham, UK has info. Held at a convention called UK Games Expo, https://www.ukgamesexpo.co.uk/game.php?id=MIN1549, the entry fees is a measly £16 or US$23

Tattoine event in Madrid, Spain. No info, no webpage, except they apparantly use the same as the Jakku event.

Naboo, in Copenhagen, DK. Finally a Facebook-event, updated info.

Lothal, in Stuttgart, Germany. Held at Germanys first Comic Con, http://www.comiccon.de/en/. No info on X-Wing, and FFG is not a partner or sponsor or visible anywhere on the website as far as I found out. Disappointed!!

Hoth, in Schaumburg, IL USA, has info, but I was only interested in the European ones.

So, out of the 7 largest tournaments in Europe this spring/summer, I only found out how to attend 2 of those! And 1 venue who apparantly has never hosted an X-Wing event!

I hope this is a fluke, and not how FFG plans on holding large events in Europe in the future.

end rant:-)

Sadly FFG is not the primary event organizer here, the regional resellers are. Each regional reseller (Edge for France and Spain for exemple) is tasked with organizing the official tournaments at the National level.

This makes sense as FFG has no implantation locally in Europe, they would not know where and how to organise the events.

I'm guessing the costs would be an order of magnitude greater if FFG tried to organise the tournaments from the US.

I know the pain. I am trying to do the Schaumburg one. I tried to ask some questions but, the only phone number listed is to the Hotel, NOT the people who organized it. The hotel is unable to answer any questions that I have.

I tried emailing the FFG contact listed on the Open Series page, and I have yet to get a response. This is most unfortunate because I need to book a flight within the next couple of days to get my early booking price. That may not happen at this going rate :(

I don't know what else to do

I plan to attend the Madrid one as it coincides with my Euro vacation and I got in touch with some X-wingers out there who plan on attending it as well. They also don't have any information other than the FFG site. They are keeping close watch for any info. They seem to think that based on previous tournaments it will cost from 5 -25 euros entry.

I had problems with the Schaumburg registration as well. I called that same number that wad listed and got the hotel as well. But I did find a "contact us" email so I gave that a try. And within a 1/2 hour all my troubles were fixed. It turns out that the person helping me was the head honcho. He was so helpful I asked for the name of his supervisor so I could let them know how much of a help he was. His response was "Thanks! I think I am basically the supervisor, well lat least owner of the event!"

Anyone interested in attending at Endor Open go visit FB page: https://www.facebook.com/events/1694397057516677/

There is info in english there as well.

Here is the official info from the orga:

Tickets are available at their shop: http://sklep.galakta.pl/category.php?id_category=68

Wait, you are going to travel all the way to Europe for an X-Wing tournament and you are concerned that the UK entry fee is $23? The alt art card will easily get that back for you if you sold it. The UK seems like a no brainer for someone complaining about the lack of English on the other pages. I am confused.

Nah, I live in Europe. Norway to be exact. I am attending the danish one in Copenhagen. The post was more of a rant over many of the organizers of the biggest X-Wing events in Europe and their (mostly) poor organizational skills. Travel within Europe is fairly cheap if you can plan months in advance, that's why it is important to get the info out.

I was going to go to Tatooine as well, but I can't commit to buying tickets until I know I have a spot. I suggest we keep a post somewhere on the FFG forums with info on all the European System Opens.

Seeing as I haven't seen any other thread on the Open Series... I guess this would be the thread with the info?

I guess so, at least for now.
