Store Championship report featuring: Palob walks the Hogs

By Red G, in X-Wing Battle Reports

Here's a battle report from my local store championship (Red Raccoon Games in Bloomington/Normal IL that was earlier today. This squad has been performing really well for me.

Palob Walks the Hogs

Palob Godalhi + Blaster Turret, Moldy Crow title, Recon Specialist, Crack Shot (31)

N'Dru Suhlak + Lone Wolf (19)

Syndicate Thug + Ion Turret, BTL-A4 title, R4 Agromech (25)

Syndicate Thug + Ion Turret, BTL-A4 title, R4 Agromech (25)

The name is a play on the wave 3 classic, Biggs walks the Dogs. It actually plays somewhat similarly.

The idea behind this list is simple. Warthog Y-wings, as they are called, are absolutely brutal jousters. They get 2 attacks (and both focus and a target lock with R4) for the cost of 1 ship. When they ion something, they simply k-turn behind it and continue ioning it, plus whatever damage their primary attacks can dish out. Palob stacks focus tokens like they're going out of style (and has the attack power of a Falcon without the range 3 band) and makes sure one enemy nearby won't have a defensive focus/evade. N'Dru is simply a bargain. He is seen as a threat, and correctly so, as he's basically a high-PS budget X-wing/Kihrahx when isolated. But if the enemy focuses on N'Dru, then Palob and the Warthogs aren't getting shot at. I commonly fly N'Dru into dangerous situations because of this - focusing on N'Dru is a mistake, I think. But then again, leave him for late game and you're simply ensuring Lone Wolf and his ability activate. It's a no-win situation.

First off, let me say the wave 7 meta is fantastic. There is so much variety even though some ships are a bit more popular than others. Nobody out of 25 players brought the same list as far as I could tell; the closest were 2 Brobot lists, but they were kitted out fairly differently.

Round 1

Poe Dameron + BB-8, Integrated Astromech, Push the Limit

Wedge Antilles + Opportunist, R2 Astromech, Engine Upgrade

Grey Squadron Pilot + Twin Laser Turret, BTL-A4 title

Wedge dealt a lot of damage this game, but as soon as Palob flew within Range 2 of Poe, it was all over. He stole Poe's focus token and Poe was easily crushed. Wedge and the TLT Y-wing were very strong opponents, but they did not have the maneuverability to compete with my jousting strength. I lost Palob this game and many/all of my shields from my other ships.

Round 2

Darth Vader + Veteren Instincts, Engine Upgrade, Adv. Targeting Computer

Whisper + Veteren Instincts, Fire Control Systems, Adv. Cloaking Device

Omega Leader + Juke, Comms Relay

This was a very scary list to face. Vader and Whisper are both classic aces, proven to be tremendously strong. Omega Leader prevents ships he has target locked from modifying dice when attacking or being attacked by Omega Leader. Combined with Juke and Comms Relay, those upgrades act as a permanent Crack Shot, removing one of my evade results. Ultimately I just got lucky this game. My opponent k-turned Whisper onto a debris field, and I ioned her the next turn, preventing her from cloaking and stacking tokens. Omega Leader was soon dispatched with some nice rolls, and eventually Vader, hopelessly outnumbered fell. All my ships were damaged, but I only lost N'Dru this game.

Round 3

Darth Vader + Swarm Tactics, Adv. Targeting Computer

Commander Alozen + Adv. Targeting Computer

Kath Scarlet (Imperial) + Shield Upgrade

This list didn't seem so imposing when I first saw it, but my opponent flew really well, using barrel rolls to get some crucial arc dodges with his TIEs. It got down to my two Warthog Y-wings, both heavily damaged with critical hits, against his shieldless Commander Alozen. I could get a couple shots at range 3, but no ion shots were sticking. Just when I thought I had him, Alozen did a brilliant barrel roll millimeters behind an asteroid taking him out of my range 1 shot and into a range 1 shot of his own. Despite my loss, this was the most fun game of X-wing I've played in a long time.

Round 4

Drea Renthal + Twin Laser Turret, Unhinged Astromech

Latts Razzi + K4 Security Droid, Weapons Engineer

Talonbane Cobra + Glitterstim, Crack Shot

The idea behind this list was pretty cool. Latts Razzi can spend a target lock to reduce that target's evade dice by 1 for another ship's attack. K4 Security + Weapons Engineer allows Razzi to get 2 free Target Locks on a green maneuver, plus a focus. However, Latts Razzi's lumbering 1 agility YV-666 was easy prey for my Warthog Y-wings. While Drea and Renthal put up a good fight, heavily damaging all of my ships, only N'Dru fell in the end.

After the fourth round we cut to the final four. I was 3-1, and the top ranked 3-1. Since only one person was undefeated (with a Brobots list), that meant I was the 2nd seed out of 25. Unfortunately, I had another commitment and had to drop out, hopefully making the 5th seed's day. :) The prize support for this event was awesome - they gave away alternate art C-3POs, which are normally only found in the expensive CR-90 expansion. I also got an acrylic range ruler for being top 8. The store gave away a BUNCH of door prizes too (including a CR-90, 2 mats, and a Rebel Transport), which I did not expect at all. Red Raccoon ended up not profiting at all from hosting the 25 of us, so here's a shout out to them for that. Most if not all of my future X-wing purchases will be from them!

As I had to take off, I didn't see who won in the end. Hopefully someone will let me know here or post it in MajorJuggler's thread.

Sweet. I love seeing good old BTL-A4 with Ion Turret still running.
