Armada Team Tournament - Vassal

By BiggsIRL, in Star Wars: Armada

Yeah gg to madaghmire he won 6-4.

This game does not lend itself well to team play. He only had to take a 5-5 to win the tournament (or something). He slow-played it and left the onus of chasing him on me (as 2nd player, with blue/black). I would never say it wasn't sporting, because it's well within the rules of the game, but it makes for a crap game. Since this was a game for Internet points, I carried on, even when I was slightly winning (enough to let his team lose 1st place).

A waste of 4 hours of my life. Not playing on equal footing is terribly frustrating. If we meet again, Mad, I will give you the win.

Not cool man, not cool. This is not an issue with team play, the EXACT same thing can happen in a regular tournament. If you are near the top, and a 5-5 will keep the top player in the top, don't expect him not to play conservatively as well. Getting upset with that is not the other players fault; it only speaks negatively to your sportsmanship.

I was courteous throughout the game, but I can't start lying that I had a good time. We were playing the anti-game and it was frustrating. I asked him explicitly if he was going for a 5-5 in the beginning, because I would have offered to draw, no sense in pretending to play.

It doesn't speak negatively on my sportsmanship, but on my patience, because I jumped at the opportunity of an engagement when I found one, however stupid it was.

I congratulated my opponent, but after all, out of 3 games I only played one game of Armada and .... this. It was very disappointing, especially from a player who I considered to be good and with a list that had a good chance. If a win for magic internet points is more important than sharing a game with someone, then I choose not to play him again. That's precisely what I said, no more, no less.

Then I think this comes down more to mentality. Part of Armada is reading the field, and knowing if your opponent will play conservatively or not, and then adjusting your own play/deployment to counter. I'm not saying that it is easy, with second player, it can be really hard to go on the offensive against a kiting player. He did share a game with you (probably why he didn't just ask for a draw). In this shared game, you were outmaneuvered and lost. I'm sure that's frustrating, but in my opinion that's no reason to start getting upset at other players to the point of refusing future games. However, that is of course your own prerogative.

Also, I'm not trying to be harsh, or belittle you in any way. I probably came off a little strong in my first response, and I apologize (personal flaw of being over defensive). I haven't heard that you were unsportsmanlike.

Honestly, I didn't think that a handshake draw was on the table. And it probably wouldn't have been fair to Church of Rocco, who played amazing in the final round against good competetion to put themselves in position to win if we had done that.

I'm genuinely sorry you didn't enjoy the game, and that you aren't interested in playing with me again. However, I employed the tactics I felt gave me the best shot at winning, and in a tournament setting, regardless of the fact that its for internet points, I won't apologize for acting in my own best interest.

I hope this is the end of this. Its unfortunate to end what I thought was a largely fantastic event on such a sour note. I vote for Zanos as MVP. He stepped up with a fleet that he didn't design to play it like a pro and consistently put us in great position.

That's why I say Armada is flawed in this respect. In X-wing, I'll take a fortressing player any day. Even running players, because the playing field is not that large and you have enough turns to cut them off. But here? Not so easy.

There was, that's why I kept asking. It upset me because I asked you bluntly, wanting the avoid a game where you only ran away. I knew I had no chance if you kept running. It gets fuzzy for me when you're ok with intentionally playing evasive but somehow the intentional draw is different, especially since both are legal ways of getting a win for your team. The only difference I see is both of our times lost.

I was looking forward to our match all week, despite warnings from my teammates.

I understand you gave it your best shot at winning, and I can't fault you for that. My objective was to have fun as well, and that part was thoroughly ruined, along with the start of my week. But the solution isn't to threaten not to play you again, I apologize for that. But I am going to tone it down with Armada on Vassal.

So top 2 playoff? ;)

Congratulations to Bacta the Future, - JJ's Juggernaut, Madaghmire, Zanos - winners of the Armada Team Tournament!

And special congratulations to Zanos - tournament MVP! Taking the most tournament points over his 3 games, and consistently winning each one, he did it with a list he didn't even build.

Great play, especially considering not being given choice of matches, or a fleet he built!!!

Runner up for MVP is Caribbean Ninja, scoring the most points for The Vanguard.

For flying the sqadron flag, taking down the ultimate spam, and lets pretend he didnt lose to a dual ISD list at the end.

Honorable Mention for MVP is SkyCake, from First Time Vassalers.

Went from being taught vassal (and some armada rules) at the start of the tournament to winning a 10-0 for the last round.

And another Honorable Mention to Matt Shadowlord of Full Jar Jar.

Yay! Well done to all the winners! :D

And well done Biggs for successfully running another fantastic tournament. Thanks for all the good times, buddy! :D

Well, we didn't finish last, that's the main thing :) (Not the winning that counts)

My heartiest congratz Bacta!

Thanks very much for such an awesome tournament Biggs!

Congratulations to Bacta the Future, Church of Rocco and Chaos Shanghied!

Congratulations to Zanos for tournament MVP - it seems like just months ago when I was PMing you to come over from Xwing Vassal to the Dark side.

Well done Skycake, you deserve your honorable mention.

And thanks for running a professional event Matt Biggs. It was a lot of fun, I enjoyed working with the other Jar Jar team members Doobleg and Miedomeda. Fourth place is not bad for a gungan themed team that spends more time on crazy ship names and in-game sound effects than tactics :D

See you all in the Galactic World Cup!
