How much room/space does the game take up?

By Jonny WS, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Alright, so here goes.

I have played Descent first edition for many years, many great moments, many arguments. Is/was a great game. However, it is no longer supported for further expansions/content.

Life goes on.

I did buy a copy of the second edition and tried to play it but couldn't get past a few issues. That was back when the game was released. Now, 2016 the game has expanded greatly with many expansions, hero and monster packs, lieutenant packs and other smaller items. This game does not appear to be slowing down anytime soon and has again peeked my interest as well as my friends.

I am a collector of things and I like to have all of the expansions for a board game. Since Descent: second edition has far more components than the first edition ever did I will need a new way to store/transport the game.

I have looked at a few of the threads and topics posted but I cannot find what I am looking for. (I do not want to sift through EVERY thread/post)

I plan on getting EVERY expansion for this game as well as all the smaller hero/monster packs, lieutenant packs.

So, my question is simple:

How much room/space does this game take up when packed away? I do plan on using sleeves for all the cards as well as small plano boxes for the smaller tokens.

If someone also has everything for this game (that is currently available) perhaps you can tell me?

To keep it simple, lets just assume that everything can be packed away in the boxes that the box-expansions have come in. Can you get everything in those boxes (tiles, monsters, cards, etc) or is there more space needed?

Firstly, no need to sift through every post. Generously pinned at the top of the forum, compiled by any2cards .

That being said, everything but the hero and monster packs comes in boxes, so all of THAT fits in those same boxes, obviously. However, the minis take up a lot of room. I have everything except for many of the Lieutenant packs (I have 5/20-something.)

For example, ALL of the tiles (just barely) fit in the base game box.

I keep all of my cards in the Labyrinth of Ruin box (some sleeved, some not.)

I have 4 large compartment boxes which I use to house all of the miniatures, and they are just thrown in there- I do not separate them with foam (I don't paint.)

I have 2 small compartment boxes which I use to house all of the tokens.

The compartment boxes all sit in a file box for convenience.

I do not use the Bilehall, Trollfens, Manor, Lair, or Nerekhall boxes. I feel like most of the minis would probably fit in there.

That is exactly what I needed to know. Thank you very much for your fast and accurate response.

I plan on using the Dewalt Tstak tool boxes for this game and based on your information I will be able to get it all in 3 of those units.

The first edition game always had the same problem with tiles and model figures being the most bulky and difficult to store. I eventually found a solution but was a nightmare at the time. I have a feeling this game will likely provide a similar nightmare if it keeps expanding.

Thank you again.

Hi Jonny WS,

As far as packing every single thing into the game boxes goes, it can be done :-)

I keep everything, all the books, tokens, tiles, sleeved cards, pod's, mini's, ... stored in the games boxes:

1 Big base box - tiles, bases & doors

2 Big exp. boxes - minis (heroes, monsters, lieut) & books

4 Small exp. boxes - every thing else cards, hero sheets, tokens, dice, pod's, ...

I guess the other 2 h&m expansions will fit in as well, still some room left :-)

I have Base Game, 2 bix Box Expansions and all Small Box Expansions with exception of Bilehall. I also have all Lieutenants, mostly all of the H&Ms.

My current setup:

Main Box: Two Bags containing Characters Sheets- Warriors and Healers, Scouts and Mage. Bags consisting of the different cards individually: OL Cards, Plot Decks, Monster Cards, Shop Cards, Relics, Travel. Search Bag consists of the cards and tokens. Objective/Village Token Bag. Lieutenant Token Bag. Familiar Bag consisting of the cards and tokens for each. Class Card Bag. Class Token Bag ( ex. Elixir Tokens, Hex Tokens) Reference Card and Hero Token Bag. Secret Room Bag- consists of the Secret Room Tiles, the special entrance tiles, Challenge tokens and Cards. Co-Op Bag: Has all Co-Op Materials. The Loot Track Cards. Shadows of Nerekhall Bag: Corrupt Citizen Cards, Special Travel cards, Influence Tokens. Bag of Hero Figures, Bag of Huge Monsters. ( Monsters with 4x4 base.) Bag containing all cut out proof of purchases. Door Bag- has door tiles and bases. Overgrowth and Portcullus Bag. Bag of Dice. Heart/Fatigue Token Bag. Condition Bag- Cards and Tokens. Threat Token bag.

Lab of Ruin Box: All Game Tiles.

Shadows of Nerekhall Box: Game Manuals. Base Game Rules, Quest Guide. Lab of Ruin Quest Guide, Shadows Quest Guide, Heirs of Blood Cam. Book, Lair of the Wyrm, TrollFens, Manor of Ravens Rulebooks. H&M Quest Sheets. Plot Deck/Threat Token Rules. Printed Manuals of Co-ops. Custom Printed Campaign Logs. Pencil.

Small Boxes: Lieutenant Bag, Medium Monster and Large Model 1x1 monster Bag. Small base monster bag.

Queen Ariad and Valyndra in a white plastic shopping Bag.

If I missed anything it's probably in the main box.

Wow, you managed to cram it all into just a few boxes. Okay, that helps me even more.
When it comes to my board games, I am pretty OCD on how things are organized (you should see my arkham horror collection) so the whole of me making this thread was to figure out how big of a tool box(s) I would need to store/transport this game safely and securely.

I have only the base game and the LoR, SoN, LotW, and TTF expansions. I keep all the tiles in the corresponding boxes, all cards in 5 deck boxes, and all the tokens and hero sheets in a small storage box about half the size of the base game box. The miniatures are on display or on my desk being painted but you could get a case for them, especially handy if you want to transport them. Somewhere on this forum, someone posted Warhammer cases that look like the get the job done very nicely.
