Master Jack of all Trades

By Arrakus, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Came up with a fun exercise for myself and I thought I would share it with you all. Hopefully someone of you will take up the challenge and have fun with it as well.

In the least amount of specializations, how many career skills can one get without getting the same career skill from two different specializations?

(E.g. Could not use Pilot & Heavy together as they both offer the Gunnery skill.)

Also, cannot use Bases, Holocrons, or any other gear to get more career skills. They all have to come from the specializations, however Talents DO count (e.g. Well Rounded).

Oh and there is no exp limit, it is just for fun after all.

This is what I got:

Diplomat: Charm, Deception, Knowledge (Core Worlds), Knowledge (Lore), Knowledge (Outer Rim), Knowledge (Xenology), Leadership, and Negotiation

Analyst : Computers, Knowledge (Education), Knowledge (Warfare), and Perception

Recruit: Athletics, Discipline, Survival, Vigilance, Brawl, Ranged (Light), Gunnery, Piloting (Planetary), Melee and Ranged (Heavy)

Shadow: Cool, Mechanics, Skulduggery, Stealth, Streetwise and Underworld

28 Career skills in 3 Specializations.

And actually seems like a good character too! Nice job. I guess you would need Exile/Emergent too if it was a character to be used though, to get the most out of Shadow.

Or just start from Shadow as a Force PC.

The problem with starting out as a Sentinel/Shadow is that F&D classes only get 6 career skills and there's significant overlap between the Sentinel and Shadow skill lists, so your overall number of class skills drops. That said, you can match Arrakus' 28 class skills in three specs without resorting to a Force-user spec:

Colonist: Charm, Deception, Knowledge (Core Worlds), Knowledge (Education), Knowledge (Lore), Leadership, Negotiation, Streetwise

Scholar: Knowledge (Outer Rim), Knowledge (Underworld), Knowledge (Xenology), Perception, plus two from Well-Rounded (probably Stealth and Coordination with this setup)

Recruit: Athletics, Discipline, Survival, Vigilance, Brawl, Ranged (Light), Melee, Ranged (Heavy), Gunnery, Piloting (Planetary)

Demolitionist: Computers, Cool, Mechanics, Skulduggery

(Optionally, use Saboteur instead of Demolitionist and grab Computers and Cool with Scholar's Well-Rounded)

Beating 28 in 3 is going to be difficult, as there's a little too much overlap in skills between the various specs that get Well-Rounded and the Recruit spec. One might be able to do something fun with the Strategist's Well-Read talent, but that spec gets Vigilance, so it overlaps with Recruit.

Thanks.

The build kinda reminds me of a Jack Ryan. An intelligence operative put through basic training and then sent out into the dark criminal underworld to collect data and find targets that could poss a threat to the Rebels/Empire.

True, to your point to get the most out of the Shadow tree one would need to take either Exile/Emergent.

Though, I do think the character is playable as is and can always pick up the those trees later and say that they were late bloomers in a way.

Nice work. I like the build.

A disillusioned chemical engineer professor who leaves a highly reputable imperial university, joins the Rebels and develops an affinity for blowing stuff up. Kinda like Dolph Lundgren's character in the Expendables.

Agree with that it might not be possible to beat 28 in 3. I am not even sure how many more combinations there are hence the post.

Hopefully someone can come with something.

I like the Jack Ryan comparison. Another thing it reminds me of: the Operative from Serenity . (Mind you, the Operative would have to *start* with something a little bit more martial-arts heavy, rather than with a diplomacy-type. But the end point might look very similar.)

Cereans start with all Knowledge skills as Career skills. That should cut down the number of Specializations needed.

ooh. That is a good one. Did not think of that. Will have to take a look at that.

Hmm. I slightly misunderstood your excercise, instead of getting as many skills without getting a skill twice, I made a character that tried to get every single skill as a career skill with as few specializations as possible.

I needed 5 specializations, and I doubt you can do it in less, although there are probably a couple of other ways to do it in five.

The beauty is that this character has an absolutely plausible CV. I call her the Cerean Dilletante.

She started as a charming thief (Smuggler/Charmer/Thief) and occasional bounty hunter (Gadgeteer). Rebels recruited her (Recruit) and she became a first aid and trauma specialist (Medic). She's not Force-sensitive, so in any campaign where the other characters focus on increasing their Force powers and Force talents, she can focus solely on dabbling in every single skill there is.

Very impressive.

I like it.

I will admit I am finding more challenging using Cereans than using straight up humans.

I have not tried getting every skill regardless of getting it twice. But upon seeing this, I think I will try.

Gave your challenge another try, and nope, can't beat 28 with a Cerean either. Best I could do was a Cerean Hired Gun (Demolitionist/Fringer) with 24 skills. Close, but no cigar.

Hi. I'm new. Nice to meet you all. I think I've got 29. Cerean with charmer, thief and recruit. There's overlap between smuggler and cerean, but the challenge said without getting the same skill from different specialisations.
