NPC Ship Designs

By Argoden, in Rogue Trader Gamemasters

I figure a thread with NPC ship stats might be handy for my fellow GMs. Feel free to post here yourselves.

The Calixian pride is an old run down ugly mutt, it dented hull is a rusty brown, to put it in different words, it has seen better days.
But looks can be deceiving, hidden in its hull are a powerful supplement of weapons.

The Calixian Pride used to be a merchant ship but has been converted into a Q-ship a long time ago.
While the outside looks bruised and battered the inside is in perfect working order.

The most noteworthy component is its Teleportarium, an ancient device which allows to teleport men to a location and back, even to locations several thousands of kilometres away

The Golden Dawn:

This ancient frigate has served the Imperium for as long as ten thousand years and has ventured across the galaxy seeing almost all of its marvels and horrors.
The Dawn is frigate of an old and unknown pattern but it is assumed it is very old pattern Sword-class.
The Golden Dawn is more than just an old ship, it was one of the first ships constructed on Mars at the beginning of the Age of Rebirth, hence its glorious name.

The crew of the ship counts some 26.000 souls and does not only consist out of indentured labourers but also out families that have lived and died the Dawn for countless of generations, some families go back as far as the ships original commissioning.
The two most influential families on the ship are the Godwinne family who traditionally take care of maintenance and engineering, and the Sarvus family who always manned the ships gun batteries.
These important families are the backbone of the ship and their record are intertwined with the ships records, they have educated many captains in their past, a wise captain would always take these families in account when making decisions about the crew since they are well organised.

The Golden Dawn is a warship and thus is adequately armed and armoured, its main weapon is the long range Sunsear Laser Battery mounted dorsally near the prow of the mighty ship.
Its secondary armament is a set of four devastating Ryza Pattern Plasma Batteries mounted amidships dorsally.
But this is not all, to repel boarding parties and to destroy small attack-craft and torpedoes the ship sprouts dozens of Vulcan Mega Bolters mounted in its hull and in turrets placed strategically across the ship.

The two most beautiful features of the ship are its captain’s bridge and crystal observation dome.
The Archeotech bridge is the pride and joy of the Dawn’s captain, it allows him to oversee the ships action better than any other “regular” bridge would allow him, great hololithic display tanks show him the ships status and its surroundings and its helm greatly improves the ships manoeuvrability. The bridge also gives a great feeling of comfort and grandeur, its wooden and engraved panels, the golden gaslight chandeliers and soft comfortable grandfather chairs also make it an ideal place to receive and overwhelm visitors.
The great crystal observation dome a true work of art, underneath it is a small park with actual living plants and trees, throughout the park are black adamantine slates inlayed with gold filament featuring the star maps of many systems and its centre on a marble pedestal is mounted a beautiful engraved telescope. The dome is used for many joyous occasions, be it a marriage, a victory celebration or simply a day off.

What would be the use of such a great vessel if their was no possibility to reach the surface of a planet, just like most other ships of its class the Dawn has a dock where it can hold and launch several smaller craft, this landing bay has to be depressurised before opening its bay doors and re-pressurised before the guests and crew can exit the smaller craft.
Currently the Golden Dawn employs the following smaller craft:

An Aquila Lander which makes for an excellent light shuttle to make a social visit, it is designed for comfort and style and can carry a pilot, a gunner and twenty passengers.
Ten Cargo Landers which are the workhorses of the ship, able to transport a lot of cargo from or to the planet surface or another ship.

Finally the Dawn’s captain also has two Guncutters; these heavily armed shuttles are perfect to land in less safe environments or to blast a small enemy encampment to dust.

The Bloody Hand of Vikoth is a typical Saynay Clan light raider. Daubed with blasphemous sigils inside and out, she is clearly tainted by the Ruinous Powers. Her interior is a bizarre mix of tattered finery and stinking abbatoir, her crew composed of deranged blood cultists serving alongside the vilest of mutants. Her captain Vikoth the Eye is a former Imperial Navigator who has fallen into utter corruption following the exile of his noble employers. A corpulent giant and champion of the warp, he bears the marks of mutation and madness.

Crimson Blight is a heavy raider in the service of the renegade Saynay Clan. It bears obvious marks of warp corruption, most notably the 100-meter warp-auger that thrusts from its prow like an obscene eyestalk. The Blight's interior is a blood-washed nightmare, and many of her crew have melded obscenely with the fabric of the ship itself. The bridge is sealed in a tumorlike mass of flesh composed of the former captain and his senior officers. The chorus of shrieked commands that issue from that horror are interspersed with maddened screams and crazed chanting.

Both these ships are meant for "grunt" spaceship encounters. They're decent fighters, but not good enough to be a major threat to a well-built and crewed PC ship. They're also clearly bad guys, and crazy enough to start fights that aren't clearly in their favor. You can play them as berserkers, or as more canny foes who retreat when badly damaged. Their high speed and maneuverability make them hard to escape from or run down. If you need a more serious challenge, you could use both at once, as the Saynay sometimes hunt in packs.

Prophet of Ruin is the flagship of Rogue Trader Trazius Mammon, great-grandson of Annias Mammon, founder of the dynasty and former Warmaster from the Segmentum Solar. Annias had his Warrant of Trade forced upon him as part of a political coup in the ranks of the Adeptus Terra. After reaching the Expanse under "security escort" by a Naval cruiser group, he quickly made a name for himself by trading upon the might of his ship and the elite Stormtroopers it carried with him to exile. He also became entangled with followers of the Ruinous Powers, who provided him with an archeotech stasis crypt that would allow him to wait out the ages while living a surrogate life through psychic domination of his descendents. Trazius is current "head" of House Mammon, and like his father and his father's father he is little more than a puppet to the ancient schemer that lies frozen in warptime on the bridge of the Prophet of Ruin. Through him, Annias continues to spin his webs of revenge against the Imperium. The Mammons have secret ties to many renegades, dark cults and pirate groups, although they have as yet to succumb to the lure of Chaos themselves. They are owed favors by the Saynay Clan, and sometimes call on them to perform tasks too foul for Mammon's public image as a dangerous but generally trustworthy Rogue Trader.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Prophet of Ruin and the Mammon dynasty are a fairly serious threat, something that a starting RT group would have trouble dealing with head-to-head. Beating them and their allies should be a fairly momentous event - a Boss Fight for a moderately experienced bunch of PCs, if you will. Annius/Trazius is primarily interested in increasing his military strength by means fair or foul, but that can easily lead to him interfering with PC Endeavors as they compete over the same resources.

The ancient seat of power of the Scott dynasty, this vessel has served the family of Rogue Traders well for over a thousand years. In that time, their fortunes have waxxed and waned, though the Glory's Profit has remained a constant. Each Rogue Trader leaves something of themselves behind; the ship is a virtual museum of the family's history and prestige, and has accumulated several archeo- and xeno-tech components over time. The latest heir to the Warrant, Nicholai, is the seventh of the line; he hopes that the number will bring him luck, after the family lost much of their holdings in a rather precipitous fashion immediately prior to him inheriting it.

The renegade ship Wretched Excess was once the Navy frigate Longsight, but centuries have passed since she was seized by mutineers during a scouting mission in the Expanse. Surviving the years by acts of piracy and station-raiding, the ship's crew has fallen into anarchy but not, as yet, greater corruption. Her new name is a jibe at the decadence of her former officers and a reminder to her new "Congress of the Helm" to avoid repeating that behavior lest they join the procession of ghostly tyrants that still walk her decks. Some of these "ghosts" are indeed the former bodies her senior officers, converted into servitors by heretek priests and set to march the corridors dressed in their own bloodied finery. Others are less explicable, warp-phantoms or worse.

She is a well-known ship in outlaw circles, albeit lacking the bloodthirsty reputation of many other raiders. The Navy would love to see her destroyed or captured, as would several Rogue Trader dynasties and colonial governments.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Wretched Excess is a dangerous but not overwhelming opponent for a starting RT ship. Her background allows her to serve an enemy or ally as needed, although any RT associating with her risks the wrath of her numerous foes.

Monster is an ancient warship since the Gothic War and has been acquired by Grinthax, an anceint Traitor Marine turned Warlord. He and several other Chaos Marines lord over the crew of this ancient vessel and have a number of small raiders in their fleet. They prey on merchant ships and will occassionally strike against Imperial patrols. This ship has suffered great misfortunes in the past and has come under the unnatural powers of the Dark Gods. Grinthax will sometimes travel without his escort ships when he is feeling predatory to hunt as a lone wolf.

This ship is meant as a very difficult encounter either to stress the resources of well funded Rogue Traders with a few ships, or to force a new Rogue Trader with only one ship to flee, or attempt some daring heroics and kill Grinthax in a boarding action.

Lathe Pattern Corvette

800m Long.
150m abeam.
Mass: 3.5 megatons
Crew: 8000
Accel: 6g
SP: 20

Speed: 11
Detection: +10
Void Shields: 1
Turrets: 1
Manoeuvrability: +30
Armour: 13
Hull integrity: 25
Space: 30
Weapon capacity: 1 dorsal.

This lightweight ship was inspired from the Cobra-class destroyer, with ease of building from common parts in mind. Lathe pattern corvettes are versatile ships designed for merchant fleet escort mission, or forward scouting. Their speed and manoeuvrability alows them to conduct efficient hit and run tactics against raider ships.

note: Corvette uses (recycled) Jovian pattern class I drive. Their small mass allows them to attain great speed and acceleration from this drive.

(note: I initially designed these ships for "Into the Maw". Two raiders opponents would have torn apart the little merchant ship of my players).
