X-wing Out of a Hat: ARA...Space?

By Bluebees, in X-Wing

Hey yall.

My buddies and I decided to spice the game up a little. We wrote down all the pilot cards, upgrade cards, blah blah blah and threw them into separate hats. No hat contained duplicate cards, so there is only one VI, one PTL, etc.

Then, in clockwise order, everyone draws a pilot card. .... Learn to love it, because that's what your flying!

Then in order of pilot skill (lowest goes first), you get 1 of two options:

1) You pick one upgrade slot on your pilot and reach into the respective hat to pick one card. Now bear in mind what you draw, you HAVE to use. So your ship can start off swell, but completely fall apart (or at the very least become unnecessarily expensive) if you get too greedy.

2) 'Fold' and bow out of the round.

The process continues until everyone 'folds'.

Then the first player who 'folded' first gets to pick a new pilot for the next round. And the cycle continues.

Suffice it to say, I got silly lucky, My pilot was Tomax Bren, and I got me Mara Jade + Lightning Reflexes for my first round. Oh the angry looks on everyone's faces.

All that aside, I realize the Tomax Bren hype train has come and gone, however I'm curious if anyone on the forums play tested a Bren like the one I played, in a serious game......

Tomax Bren (24)
Lightning Reflexes (1)
Mara Jade (3)
TIE Shuttle (0)
Total: 28
If you were given the chance to proxy this in a competitive list, what would you run with him? Tie Advanced + An Interceptor? New Defenders? Mini-swarm?
As always, Thanks for reading.

I'm a bit confused here. What if I was to draw an Academy Pilot? That would be that? Or what if I drew Luke Skywalker and then as an upgrade card got Heavy Laser Cannon...

I guess I don't follow the rules very well. You mentioned that the ship can get expensive - does that matter? Aren't you just playing against whatever your friends drew, or do you have to insert it into a 100pt list?

Oh please don't get me wrong - its riddled with issues. That being said, you only select upgrades that your ship can equip when its your turn ("You pick one upgrade slot on your pilot and reach into the respective hat to pick one card").

If you drew a Academy pilot - you can really only select a modification slot during that round.... But at least you get to pick first during the next one! ..... -.-

This process - if you can't tell already - was made in a matter of... eh, 15 minutes?

Again, not reallllly the point per-se - More was curious how people feel the Tomax Bren loadout. If they have played it, etc.

Hell, if we wanna turn this thread into a "How does one play Draft-Wing?" you'll hear no complaints from me!

You can also try Fab's squad builder in random mode. It generates some pretty wacky combos using cards you might not otherwise use.
