EotE Dice Roller for Google Hangouts

By GM Hook, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

This is a bit late in coming, but I thought I'd start a dedicated thread for my EotE Dice Roller app on Google Hangouts. Currently, discussion has been on the same thread as the Hangout EotE Tools thread ( https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/80113-playing-remotely-try-hangout-eote-tools/page-5 ) but I wanted to start a fresh one for the EotE Dice Roller to hopefully make information a little easier to find.

The roller can be launched in Hangouts from: https://cjhooker.github.io/eote-dice-roller-release/hangout-button.html

There is also a Beta version of the roller, which can be launched from: https://cjhooker.github.io/eote-dice-roller-qa/hangout-button.html

Features currently in Beta:

  • Add fixed symbols (e.g. an Advantage or Success) to your dice pool
  • Add a caption to your roll explaining what it's for

So use the Beta if you want the latest and greatest, and use the release version if you have any issues with the Beta.

If you have questions, requests, or feedback, there are a few ways to contact me:

If you're interested in contributing to the app, definitely check out the GitHub repository: https://github.com/cjhooker/eote-dice-roller

Hope you enjoy it!

one idea would be to give the gm the ability to push difficulty dice to a players roll.

One of my players suggested the same thing just the other day. Definitely something that could be useful. Thanks!

This is so fantastic. Using it along with roll20 in hangouts for my weekly online session. So convenient and easy. Thanks!

Glad you are enjoying it!

I'v been using the original for a few months now with the 2 online groups I run. Glad to see you've brought it to the Beta for Hangouts as well!

Extremely useful and well put together application; you have my gratitude.

I'm curious about one thing: does the Beta version show all the dice results other players got or just the end result after comparison?

Both the release version of this roller and the beta will show what each die rolled as well as the end result, for all players.

I just added a small feature to the beta version:

When you roll a numeric die (e.g. d100 or d10), it will show you the type of die, as well as the result of the roll. Before it would only show the result, and the other players would have no way to know which die you actually rolled.

Thanks for the tool!

One query that might be more a Google issue - I can't get my profile icon to display in the dice roll area as you have with your mug above. Admittedly I've just created a new google account, but I've uploaded profile pics to all the places I can think of - my Google Plus, Gmail and Hangout pages for instant. Google seems to forget the picture though, which is a bummer. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

That's strange. It should just be the Google Plus profile pic. Does your profile pic appear in other places in Hangouts? For example, if you turn off the camera, does the profile image you uploaded show?

I turned off the camera and saw my profile pic down the bottom of the hangout space, but it still wasn't appearing in the app.

However, after selecting "about google chrome" it upgraded from version 48 to 49, and after restarting chrome it now shows my profile picture ok.

So chalk that down to a Chrome issue perhaps - this was on a Mac running 10.9.5 FWIW.

Sorry to trouble you

Does the d100 function work if you add a "+20" to the roll in the case of multiple criticals? E.g. "d100 +20"

Currently we have doing just the d100 and then adding the "+20" to the roll our selves.

Awesome app by the way. Definitely enjoy that others can see the everyones roll without having to share their screen.

Nope, there's no way to add +20 to the roll, you have to add it yourself. You can roll different dice (eg d10) but that's it.

Heh - however did I miss this thread the first time around?

Fun fact: I work for google as a software tester on Hangouts. :)

GM Hook, I just wanted to thank you again for your excellent dice roller! The update that added the ability to include automatic dice results to each roll has been great! It's nice to see the extra Successes/Advantages that certain talents add to the dice pool right up front.

Can you let them know how much it blows that the new version of Hangouts doesn't support apps like the dice roller or Roll20?

Because it blows hella hard.

Wait what? I just used this a week ago. I'm missing something here.

[edit: I just tried it a minute ago and it worked. Am I a wizard?]

I can certainly talk to someone and see what they have to say about it. I don't know what the upcoming schedule is like, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

DISCLAIMER: Not actually representing Google here. This is all on me baby.

How are you launching Hangouts? If you launch from an event, I know you get the old version directly. But for me at least, if I just start a video call from Hangouts, I get the new version and have to tell it to send me to the old version instead.

You're welcome! I do find adding the symbols up front makes it easier for everyone to know what's going on.

Reeeeeally? Perhaps I'll have to pick your brain sometime. For a while, lots of people were having issues with the roller locking up. Seemed like it was possibly related to also having Roll20 open in Hangouts.

Not sure if people are still having that problem.

If anyone is, let me know!

I have never gamed over the net, but I may start. How will this handle the Meta-Game talents where the player can actually turn a die to an adjacent face? It won't be able to will it? Thanks.

No, right now there is no way to handle that in the roller. The player would probably have to look at a physical die and say how it affects the results.

I don't actually have the books that introduce those talents. If someone can post the descriptions of the talents, I can add it to the to-do list. No promises on timeline, though. :)

So I go to your link above, otherwise I can't seem to find it. I was using the video call as you suggest previously and yeah, it wasn't available. However, when I click your link I get a browser window with everything available. I figured it was me doing something wrong, not a version issue. Good to know!

Being able to use the version of Hangouts with apps is a huge boon for me and my group.

Well, as much as I'd love to bring good news, apparently the word is that the devs have too much on their plate and not enough manpower to go around, so that's why the dice functionality was cut.

So yeah, pretty much the curse of every software company on the planet since the dawn of time. :)

Will it come back? No idea, beyond random speculation around the office and "Yeah, that would be cool to have."
