Well, I did need to purchase a Raider and another Advanced box to play my triple Advanced aces squad. Was it worth it?

Well, Vader, Stele, and Strom brought me to a first place finish, so yes.

Yesterday I watched a youtube vid of exactly such a squad utterly losing to ZZZAA+ a T-70. I can see why it would be challenging, to say the least. Typically people say 'Don't joust' - but what are you supposed to do, teleport yourself behind the enemy? Maybe it's a matter of how many practice games you are willing to spend losing with such a squad, but I don't see how to play it.

I'm actually buying one extra prototype for that exact list, at least casually

I bought the shuttle for advanced sensors, but I knew I'd end up using it so it didn't bother me. Apart from that, I just buy everything I want based on general concepts (for example: I'm getting 3-4 TAPs, knowing I can run a generic miniswarm with an ace, but also that I can build around them too).

I guess the closest to that I've done is spend €110 for a Raider so I could start running 4x Advanced lists, but goddamnit have I gotten my money's worth out of those cards...

Bought a TIE Phantom ($15 for a Tactitian and second copy of Fire Control) + second copy of Tactitian off ebay ($8) to run two "tactical control" B-wings in my current tournament list. Only time I've bought anything for a specific build and I had tested it with proxies prior (does good work ), but that just doesn't fly at the tourneys.

Apart from the obvious raider for a few cards, I bought 2 more K-Wings and a 3rd phantom to be able to run the danger zone list from world's (then ran the 3 K-Wings with bombs more than with tlts and tacticians), then bought a 4th k-wing and a second most wanted to run 4 wardens with autoblaster turrets

Buying the raider at all just for the title and system for the TIE Advanced, while not planning to ever use more than one TIE Advanced at a time.

I went five wins in a row (the first four with zero Dragonfly losses) before I was taken out by a rebel captive Chiraneau / Kath list in the semi-finals - stress is a real killer for this list!
