Ideas for cross-faction ships

By StarSlayer, in X-Wing

So, I'm sure there is already a thread out there discussing this, but I haven't found it. I know there are people talking about putting Poe Dameron in a TIE/FO, or Han and Chewie in the Shuttle Tyridium, and while those cards would be great, I think there also exists another elegant solution. A title card called:

*Stolen Vessel (Unique, Title)

You may ignore this ship's faction for squad building purposes. You may equip a second, non-unique title. You cannot equip this card if your pilot skill is 3 or greater.

Squad Cost: 0/1

While this does not allow an ace pilot to fly any ship, it does allow you to take a generic pilot from any faction and add it to your squad, perhaps a disillusioned Imperial or a Villain looking for purpose will join the Rebellion. Or a pilot tired of the war seeks to make a profit in the outer rim. Or the Empire coerces a pilot to turn to their cause. In any case, it can be thematic as long as it is limited, hence the title is unique and the PS requirement weeds out the named pilots...

I think it might also be wise to add the condition that no other unique cards may be assigned to this ship. While at first I was considering leaving this open (to have Han on a Lambada for instance), you might run into trouble when it comes to certain faction-specific characters (R2-D2) that were not made faction-specific in certain forms (astromech).

Another piece of additional text I am considering is "Until the first time you perform an attack, each time an attacker of your ship's faction declares you the target of an attack, that ship immediately receives one stress token." Kind of like Rebel Captive, if your enemy sees a friendly ship with friendly IFF's, they might be hesitant to attack until they know for certain it is an enemy (it attacks). This would bump the cost to 1-2, maybe 3, I am not certain on these matters.

Anyways, long post, but I am curious to see what you guys think of this, I also think that specific pilot packs would be cool, to put Han and Chewie as pilots of a Lambada, Luke in an E-Wing, etc. I also think it would be cool to see some Rebel Scum and Imperial Bounty hunters that could be fielded to either faction.

I like the unique stolen vessel title idea. It would add a lot of new build options. It would probably make me spend more money on ships, though.

I like the idea in theory, but it would have to come after FFG made a restriction list for tournaments. Then you could just add these kinds of thematic cards to the list without trying to make them tournament balanced.

This idea has been proposed before in a few forms and it's always a bad idea. If actual friendly ships don't cause this effect in mirror matches, why should a stolen ship?

I think this idea is neat and fluffy but in practice it would dilute the identity of each faction. I guess I'm just thinking of Star Trek Attack Wing and how you can pretty much run any faction with any other faction. Definitely a fun house rule idea though.

When "friendly" ships meet it may just be a training exercise so they are already preprogrammed to know who the bad guys are. In a combat situation you see a ship that you know belongs on your side you may hesitate to shoot at it until it is identified as being hostile.

Now if you want the biggest reason that should NOT be allowed it isn't the blue on blue situation but rather point at the Scum who happen to be flying a number of the same ships as the original factions. I mean if firing on a stolen Shuttle would have problems then shouldn't rebels have trouble firing on Y-Wings or HWK and what about the Firespray?

I do want to see cross-faction pilots for some ships but only on a limited basis and certainly not as an upgrade that could be used on any ship.

Old canon had most of the Imperial ships in Rebel hands anyway. Galaxies was the one with the exception of a few novels that introduced real pirate/scum ships outside uglies, cloakshapes, z-95s, and Y-Wings.

The new disney**** canon abolished it anyway, so the identity argument is completely moot. More importantly, you are forced to buy other faction ships for upgrade cards. The reason why you wouldn't make ships outside mass produced (Lines, Y wings) is for balance.

Han and Chewie as pilots of a Lambada

The idea would probably work better if you just limit it to non-unique pilots. That would open it up to things like Black Sun Aces, but weeds out ships like Mux, Chaser and Tarn.

I don't want to know what happens when Kavil gets totally Ruthless!
