Boba, Chewy, R2, integrated astromech order of operation

By balindamood, in X-Wing Rules Questions

When, relative to Chewbacca, et.al's ability to cancel a crit, does Boba get to decide to flip an upgrade card? The order of operation has not been further subdivided during the suffer damage phase that I am aware. Right now, after the compare results phase and a shield less defender has an uncancelled crit:

Defender receives face up damage card

Chewy, R2, maybe integrated astromech discards the critical hit without resolving the effect.

Does Boba have any say in this, or does he have to wait for the next one for the crit to actually go through?

It doesn't matter if the face-up card is eventually discarded. It was still dealt, so Boba's effect kicks in.

This. It's the dealing of the card that counts, not whether it was discarded, or flipped face down before it could do anything.

Now if there was an ability that prevented the card from being dealt in the first place, that would block Boba. But you can't discard something you never received in the first place.

Although maybe you're asking the larger question of whether Boba can discard Chewbacca before he's able to discard the damage card? Except Chewie triggers immediately after the card is dealt, while Boba goes after the attack. So Chewie could still do his thing before Boba gets rid of him.

I thought Boba triggered later. I would rather see what the crit was before I decided to use Boba or not, sort of like Crackshot.

Just remember that it is Boba who is being discarded and NOT the damage that was just dealt. You'll know what the card is and will be able to determine if you want to use Boba or not to take out some upgrade.

When it comes to Chewie Crew the wookie can be used and gone long before Boba can take him away. Of course if Chewie isn't used then Boba decides to take the wookie away the window to use that upgrade has passed. The Intergrated Astromech will be mostly the same.

Now if R2 really means R2-D2 in any form there is nothing the droid can do to stop Boba except keep the shields up to prevent that face-up card from ever being dealt.
