Easy to fly rebel list for younger kids

By Crackin Dirty, in X-Wing

Need some recommendations for an easy list for my grade school kid to play. He has been playing for a month now and when he gets good grades he will get his own ships.

I want to keep it simple so more than likely a large base ship with turret, but which, falcon or dash?

He is getting better at maneuvering and I want him to have something with the large ship that he will actually have to make some effort to fly. He does tend to attack the center of the board then not know what to do, I want to keep him to a 2 or 3 ship list till he can straighten that out.

Any help is appreciated.

My daughter, who just turned 8, loves to run this list.

Outer rim smuggler 27

Engine upgrade 4

Rookie pilot 21

R5 astromech 1

Rookie pilot 21

R5 astromech 1

Rookie pilot 21

R2-D2 4

100

first of all, try less than 100 points.

70 80 ish?

2 ships are easy: less upgrades AND less ships to read.

1 turret 1 non-turret.

Falcon

Xwing?

There. Done.

Start with the Falcon and a basic X-Wing, that'll give him either the Escape from Hoth (Han, Chewie, Luke, R2-D2) or Attack on DSII lists (Lando, Nien Nunb, Wedge). Recognizable and fun :)

If he's a fan of the Star Wars Rebels cartoon, there's always a Ghost + Phantom list when Wave 8 hits the stores... while it is a bit more complicated than just Fat Han + some X-Wings (or Z-95s, or A-Wings) it's thematically appropriate.

I hear Naboo has some starfighters that are perfect for young children.

Good grades = More ships.

The secret to see your son as a "Man of the Month" during your golden years

Though I started my sons off with large base PWT, kids can do more. My oldest (6) is actually better with x-wings, with the Falcon he gets too ambitious and forgets about the rocks. Dash would work better for him.

For my sons, keeping the number of upgrades low is the trick.

Probably want to stick with thematic ships like the falcon and x wings.

But be careful giving him a turret ship every game when hes just starting out, it's gonna make his maneuvering skills weaker when it comes to getting a ship in arc. ( i know this from experience with a player I helped start the game)

If you keep the turret from him sometimes, he will thank you once he wants to fly imperial aces, or IG2000s, or a wings, or blt y wings, or pretty much most stuff in the game.

When I play with my kids, one of my daughters loves to fly Chewbacca with Push the Limit, Dash Rendar, Gunner and the Millennium Falcon title.

  • One of the best dials in the game
  • No criticals
  • Don't have to worry about asteroids so much
  • You get to reroll if your dice are bad
  • Focus and Evade every turn or Focus and TL if no-one can shoot you make choosing actions easy
  • Plus she likes that the Gunner card has a wookie on. He's Chewbacca's friend, apparently. :)

Falcon

Falcon

Falcon

Falcon!

Thanks for all the suggestions. Will probably go with the Falcon, he has only seen the OT movies and he will like the Falcon. I was thinking Dash might help with asteroids. I can of course get that for him later and he can play either one (or use Dash crew).

His favorite ships are A and B wings (which I don't think are so great for him at this point) but I am sure if I get him Wedge he will like that a lot. We only have the T-70 from the core set but he loves the OT so a T-65 or two should spark his interest.

Hopefully he takes a few years to really wreck my lists.

I had to improvise on the fly on Sunday with an 8 year old son of a friend. He wanted to roll the dice but I knew he wasn't getting the cards. The numbers on the bases are fairly simple to understand, especially with everything being color coded. I took the Chewbacca list I had as one of the options his brother might have flown and had 2 X-Wings with it. Yes, you throw away balance when you do this and if I was planning for it, I would have matched them up more closely, but it made for a simple straightfoward game that he got to move ships, use the maneuvers, roll dice and "play" the game. He has played the basic scenario before with the X-Wing versus the TIE Fighters without asteroids. He adjusted mostly well to the asteroids... the dials were the hardest for him to visualize and play, but he had a blast doing it.

You can do the same thing with generics, but if needed, you can always play without the cards for younger kids. It worked great! His last ship left he "escaped" off the board. It's fun to play with wide open imaginations and even more sound effects.

dash and falcon, nothing easier to fly than turrets.

I almost recommend learning on just T-65 X-wings to learn the basics. You don't have to worry about fancy barrel rolls or boosts. You learn how not to bump. You learn how to K-turn. It's a good ship to learn on.

I would worry going with a big turret ship that they won't pick up the basics of the game, but maybe that's just me.

The problem is that kids love the Millennium Falcon and gravitate to it quickly. Soon that will be replaced with the Ghost... but for now... they all know the Falcon.

For younger kids smaller lists and no pilot skills really helps simplify the game. The two characters that a child might want to run, when it comes to the YT-1300, have easy pilot abilities that could be used. Same goes for the X-wing pilots that your child will know and probably want to play with. As the adult, you should not play with any pilot abilities or upgrade cards.

Han Solo and Luke Skywalker vs. Darth Vader and TIE Fighters can be a lot of fun for the kids. It is still fun for the adult to play a simple TIE swarm without the tricks as it challenges you to concentrate on your movements. I have yet to meet a kid that does not have fun flying Luke and Han around blowing up TIE Fighters.... :)
