What's the best delivery method for Advanced Proton Torps?

By Rogue Dakotan, in X-Wing

Not my Soontir...

Was range 3 behind a rock last night. I had already lost my stealth device to some horrid TLT scum bastards. I had an evade left. His YV-666 rolled 3 hits. 5 dice, 4 blanks 1 focus... With Thrusters and my evade I still took that hit to end Soontir's run.

I ran PTL Rhymer last weekend and found he was pretty easy to use. He took a big chunk out of the Falcon with his opening shot and likely would have finished it off except I got blocked by a Rookie X-wing.

Prockets on Engine Upgrade VI Vader are the best way to deliver Advanced Proton Torpedoes.

I've flown Nera with Deadeye, E2, Rec Spec, Extra Munitions, APT before. What happens is that even if your opponent is stupid enough to intentionally fly Soontir into range one of her, Soontir will still only take 1 damage from it. So you end up spending like 40 points on something that doesn't even counter the thing you're trying to counter that well, and you're paying more points for it. That's because Soontir is ******* busted.

Your opponent would need a perfect defense roll to only take 1 damage from an APT shot that had a focus to modify it.

You'd be surprised by how often these seems to happen...

"Hah, Soontir Fel needs a PERFECT ROLL here!" And then he just straight throws five evade dice...

Yep, he got a perfect defense roll/could modify to perfect and took one hit. Next time he rolled/modified to perfect again and took one crit. He only died because I got lucky and the crit was a Direct Hit.

My opponent turned 2 blanks and a focus into 4 evades with Palp and Autothrusters and focus and evade to dodge a 4/4 hit attack last time I faced it. That's not a NPE or anything.

The problem is that Soontir simultaneously doesn't care about bad luck because of all of his modifiers unless he gets hyper unlucky, while he benefits massively from good luck.

So what happens is that if your opponent's dice get lucky for the one chance you have to get Soontir you lose the game.

If Mauler Mithel gets a perfect evade roll, you can always kill him later because he's a TIE Fighter. If Soontir or a regen ace does you've lost your one chance to kill him.
