Any info on Dial Upgrade Kits?

By Killerardvark, in X-Wing

I know we're all excited for wave 8, but it looks like the Dial Upgrade Kits are also on that same boat. I'm very interested in them, but I'm skeptical they will be a significant enough improvement. Have there been any spoilers on how they work? What all is included?

Edit: Yes I've seen this article... Not enough info for me to understand them and buy them blindly. https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2015/10/22/ace-maneuvers/

Have you played armada? If yes... Then you know exactly how well they work. If not... They work ok.

The down side is going to be changing the dials in and out all the time will probably be a pain, but if you get enough for all of your dials it will take up so much extra room in your storage...

Each pack, according to the article, includes three plastic housings for the dials of your choice, and cardboard cutouts for all the ships from the faction you buy up to wave 7.

I have way too many ships to get these for all of them, but I'll likely pick some up for the squadrons I'll take to the Yavin open. Which, thinking about it, if I go with the lists I'm thinking about means 2 packs of Scum for the main event, and 2 Rebels and 3 Imperial for the side event... Hmm. That could get pricey.

I have not used Armada dials. One big question I have is, does the cardboard circle move or does the plastic selector move? Either way, if this fixes the issue of loose dials I may be inclined to get a set. I don't think saving space is a good excuse for this. We'll see.

I'm thinking that one of each pack is going to be my max. Worst case scenario, like if i'm running a 7-8 tie swarm, I will just have to use mixed faction dials.

The cardboard moves, not the plastic.

This has me worried that the loose dial issue will be equal or worse (if not much worse due to constantly changing which is in the holder).

Would love to get these for ALL my dials. But since I have so many dials... I would easily be in the $120+ range to cover them all. And while not a ton of money, it is really a luxury I do not need. They look neat though. Wish they had worked out to about a buck each. I would have definitely bought them for all my ships.

"And cardboard cutouts" is what concerns me. If they are snug inserts like the distance marker on the maneuver tool then once you insert the cutout you may never get it out. But without then insert you may be be able to tell one ship from the other.

So nothing to do buy wait. Many people have close to or well over 100 ships. That's a lot of dials if you take one for each, not to mention the room they would take up.

I'm hoping they are compatible with the number tokens. If not, they missed an obvious opportunity. Sometimes I'd rather have numbers so I don't have to place the dial directly next to the ships. Using numbers that associate with the ship would be awesome! A little ship silhouette is fine, but if you're running more than one of a ship it'd be nice to tell them apart.

I'm planning to take plasticard or thin card and make a number insert to put in place of the ship silhouette marker. Maybe even laminate the card insert so I can easily change the number. But really it will probably just be easier to move the number token from ship to ship.

As the man says..."hell to the nah". I am not buying any of these. I can't imagine how massive a PITA it would be to take all my dials apart without destroying one or both sides.

The normal ones work fine, no reason to mess with what works.

I'm going with no. The inserts are not for numbers.

Too bad really,

Also looking at the picture it doesn't seem very likely that the insert will even be easy to take out if at all. This appears to be a new dial per ship type per ship. That's about 30 packages (3 in a pack) times ~ $10/ package for all the ships I have.

There are a lot of expansions and other games I could get for that; even a brand new custom Battle Foam case. So this may be an expense I don't need.

Again, too bad the insert isn't for numbers. But I'm still hoping that they easily pop out; we'll see.

I'm thinking the ship tokens slide in through the back before you put the dial on. I think some people here are assuming you put it in through that oval. Of course we don't know until more information is provided or we finally get them in our hands. I'm surprised they aren't providing more information since how these work will have a great bearing on who buys them and how many people buy.

Dial damage is a huge concern of mine. They say you should avoid having any marks on your dials so your opponent can't predict what you selected based on positioning. I would think it would be easier with these if you had some mark on the back that is a glaring beacon when turned and visible in that little area that the cardboard dial is seen. "Hey, every time I see that scuff mark, he's doing a K-Turn."

Not to mention, once you pull that black dial holder off the cardboard there's no going back or your dial will be super loose.

Sliding them through the back would require more cardboard and the possibility that they could slip out against the maneuver dial. Possible but less efficient overall. I hope you are right though...

I can't wait for them to hit shelves. Just having s few of each and swapping out the card board sounds perfectly fine to me. Also I want to paint them.

Looks like a completely unnecessary expense; I'll just use the dials that come with the ship I payed for and call it good. I've had no problems with the regular dials yet, and I can't imagine any issues these will solve. A dial can be just as loose in one of the Armada style cups as in a regular dial, just as notches, marks, etc. will remain visible. Really, I think the cardboard dials look fine, they don't take away from the visual appeal of the game, so why mess with what works?

This is where I'm sitting until something pops up to show me otherwise. They are pretty though...

I looked into them a while ago, and it looks like the silhouette id slides in the back, behind the dial cardboard itself. It also looks like there will be plenty of ID tokens, no need to worry.

From the article:

A pack of maneuver dials includes three dial ID tokens for every ship from the T-65 X-wing and TIE Fighter in the original X-Wing Core Set, up to the T-70 X-wing and TIE/fo fighter from Star Wars: The Force Awakens™ Core Set! Soon, every X-Wing expansion will include a dial ID token for you to use with your plastic maneuver dials if you so choose. These will begin with the Ghost Expansion Pack, the Mist Hunter Expansion Pack, the Punishing One Expansion Pack, and the Inquisitor’s TIE Expansion Pack. Standard cardboard maneuver dials will still be included in each expansion.

So one pack will cover most 3 ship lists, 2 packs for larger lists, and 3 packs for swarms. I am actually looking forward to these, as storing 3 or more of these and then being able to get rid of half of every dial I already have will actually save space in my case. Beside that, I think they're classy. I might even paint some kind of scheme on mine to personalize them even more.

To be honest, I think the only issue they're supposed to solve is that FFG don't have all of our money. They are, like the coloured bases and pegs, completely unnecessary. But, like the coloured bases and pegs, they're a nice extra if you want them.

Man, they charge a lot of money for plastic.

Man, they charge a lot of money for plastic.

That never stopped other companies... Ozarka, Nestle, Aquafina... put plastic around a free commodity and soon everyone will pay for water! Actually, I don't think we're paying that much for plastic. Most of the costs are Research / Development, Molds and Shipping.

Man, they charge a lot of money for plastic.

It's the tooling.

The actual plastic is only pennies, but you've still got to pay for that tooling.
