I can't see anyone else has posted a rundown yet so may as well....
This sunday last was our first store championship, with eighteen players (I think!) from the local area and bolstered by a sizeable contingent from Sydney also, so a great turn out. Thanks first up for Good Games Newcastle for running the event, everything went really smoothly with a great atmosphere.
Apologies in advance for any errors I’ve made in the retelling of this. ![]()
My list was
VSD1 with Motti, Needa, Boosted Comms and Flight Controllers
VSD1 with Dominator and an Intel Officer
Glad2 with Demolisher, Ruthless strategists, a veteran captain and assault torps,
Raider 1
Squadrons - Vader, Boba Fett and three Tie Fighters
Came to 400 even. Objectives were most wanted, hyperspace and dangerous territory
First game was against Dean one of the regulars at our store and a great guy. He was running an Ackbar MC80 assault (defiance), an Assault frigate and a corvette backed up by two YT2400s and 3 A wings. We were both at 400 even and he won the roll off to decide who had initiative, and gave me first player, with me choosing Deans Intel sweep objective (his corvette, my Raider being the objective ships). First player and 4 activations worked out really well for me, my Raider activating last then first to steal an objective token from right under Defiances nose (and dual arcing it along the way) before running like hell away at speed 4. My demolisher managed to catch Deans objective corvette and take it out before using the assault frigate as a convenient hiding spot via colliding to avoid being nuked in return by Defiance also. Demolisher spent the rest of the game on the tail of the assault frigate and ended up taking her down. Meanwhile our squadrons basically ground each other down - Awing counters are still an effective force!
That left my two VSDs going up against the big boy. Dominator, on the assumption that vs Xi7s shields were a bit of a luxury anyway, funnelled just about every shield she had left into Defiance, only Motti keeping her alive to tell the tale. I managed to take Defiance out before she could get what would have been a fatal volley on Dominator giving me the win with the Intel sweep objective. Could have been very different except that my ships had so many options with activation order and first player - when Defiance fired at full effect she can basically cripple a VSD every volley. The score blew out a bit and I went 10-0.
Game 2 was against Andrew, another regular at our store and a very skilled player with Imperials. He was running a fully loaded ISD2, with demolisher and a raider plus a scary air superiority contingent of vader, mauler, sontir and dengar. Andrew had the bid and chose to go first, picking my dangerous territory. Having been shredded by his demolisher in previous games I deployed extremely defensively with both victories together on my right flank. Unfortunately this also made them prime targets for the ISD2s Gunnery teams! Again the squadron battle was tense but probably a draw overall with neither side having much left in fighters by the end. Boba died early, but Vader hang around and managed to clean up a few of the opposing Imperial aces via flight controller boosted accuracies. The game I think was really decided in turn two, with Andrews demolisher swooping in and trying to dive between my two VSDs. Again, 4 ship activations saved me as I was able to keep both victories unactivated until Andrews demolisher had made her attack run, with combined fire from Dominator (again burning shields like anything), Mottis VSD (which missed with everything from the side arc) unloading into her to stop the dual arc first turn activation. After surviving everything else I could possibly throw at her (including two tie fighter blue dice!), Andrews demolisher finally went down to a heroic squadron phase shot by Vader himself. Literally the last dice I could throw at her. My demolisher caught Andrews Raider and took her out before barely surviving a front arc shot from the ISD2. My Raider did his best to not be noticed - I think his only contribution in this battle was as an activation sponge, and maybe a sneaky volley at the ISD2 when she was concentrating on gunning down my victory classes.
By now of course Andrews ISD2 was bearing down on my hapless VSDs. Its first volley put Dominator on life support. Due to my deployment a quick calculation told me I could get the wounded dominator into the fight but Mottis VSD was never going to be able to turn hard enough to bring her main guns to bear. The battle ended with the unedifying sight of my VSDs running shambolically away at speed 2 from the vengeful ISD which turned to chase them scarily quickly. Again, Motti saved me, with my demolisher and Dominator both only alive on Mottis hull bonus at the end of the game. So I came away with the win, basically up by the points of Andrews Raider and Demolisher. 215-95, 120 MOV, 7-3 to me.
So going into the final game three I was on the top table and expecting my Armada brain to give out any moment. Game 3 was against Tristan who was up from Sydney with a semi-similar list to mine - an Ozzel VSD1, Demolisher, a Raider (Impetuous I think), but also with a full scale firespray Rhymer ball - Vader, Rhymer, Dengar, Bossk and 4 firesprays. Again with the points bid Tristan chose to go first and picked my Dangerous Territory.
This was a great game - very close and some cliff hanger moments. I deployed again very (too) defensively, trying to keep the VSDs arranged so they could cover each other from a potential demolisher flank attack. I thought I had lost it completely in the first turn, with Mottis VSD deployed too far from the action and my Raider head to head with Tristans Demolisher. My Raider took Tristans demolisher to the face in turn two but survived by being able to brace against demolishers front arc. This was followed by Tristans demolisher move but due to facing and obstacles Demolisher couldn't quite bring her side arc to bear to finish me off. Extremely surprised to still be in the land of the living, my Raider went to speed 4 and ran away. She spent the rest of the game looping through the backfield and finally getting some inconsequential volleys into Tristans VSD.
In the main battle, Tristan made fantastic use of Wulf Yularen and Ozzel on his VSD to push his squadron ball exactly where they needed to be. He also manoeuvred very skilfully, using Ozzell and Wulfs nav token to alternate between speed zero and speed 2 on the VSD1 which definitely threw the expected pace of the engagement out for me. With Rhymer enabled firespray hits mounting up, I threw my squadrons into the Rhymer ball in the hope of pulling it apart supported by my Ruthless Glad 2 demolisher. My initial strike went fairly well, downing two of the firesprays, but Tristans Raider, bossk and Vader were always going to come out ahead. At this point my Demolisher was running low on shields from a couple of firespray volleys and was coming into close range of both Tristans Demolisher and his Raider. I don’t think I had any real options for keeping my demolisher alive at this point, and opted for a last gasp attack on Tristans demolisher, which I feared with first turn could end up mauling my VSDs in the late game. Not sure if this was the right move – I did fairly inconsequential damage, and lost my demolisher in short order when he activated.
It was not all in vain however! Tristans demolisher swept in for an attack run on Dominator, hurting her badly but again my activation advantage saved me as I had been able to keep her unactivated till this point. Dominators front and side arcs were both able to fire at full effect, and combined with the earlier attack from my demolisher, I managed to take Tristans demolisher down, putting us at one ship kill a piece.
By this time Tristans Fire-Rhymer Ball had finished off my fighter wave and resumed plinking at Dominator. My two VSDs were still too far away from Tristans VSD to attack it effectively this late in the game, and his Raider had zoned out. The game ended again with Dominator (by now spamming engineering) alive on two hull plus a couple of shields. A great game and very well played by Tristan who ended up winning - we were both down by a demolisher but he was slightly ahead on fighters and objectives – I think it was 185-141 – 44 MOV, 6-4 to Tristan.
So the day ended, I ended up placing third, Tristan and I having neither go enough points out of the final game to retain first place! I got third, Tristan was second, and sincere apologies to first who I missed the name of!!!
Thanks again to Good Games Newcastle who ran a great tourney (as usual!) and who are doing a great job supporting and building our local Armada community. Great job guys! ![]()
