Rules Question - Battles

By Scullysguy, in Battlelore

Sorry if this is a stupid question. I am new to this game.

During the "movement" phase of the turn are you required to state which units you plan to battle with each order? Here's why I ask. Let's say that during the "movement" phase, you order two units into melee range with the same defending unit. But during the first battle, the defending unit is forced to retreat and is therefore no longer in melee range of your second unit. But, your second unit also happens to be in melee range of a second defending unit. Even if your intent was to battle the defending unit that was forced to retreat are you still allowed to battle the secondary target?

the decision as to which enemy unit to battle is made at the time that your unit chooses to battle. It could be _any_ adjacent unit, in the case you listed.

In Phase 2, Order Your Units, you only state which units are ordered. You do not state what the orders are. In Phase 4, Resolve Each Battle, each battle is resolved sequentially, in the order of your choice. The first step in each battle is to indicate the ordered unit that will battle and its target. The decision as to which target to combat is made at that point, not when you were ordering units. (Pages 13 and 19.)
