Getting Stressed in the Activation Phase

By DG Medic, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Recently during a game of Epic play we had just finished the planning phase and started the activation phase. My opponent went first and dropped a conner net on top of my ship. He had a setup that not only did I get a damage and ion tokens, but it also caused my ship to be stressed. I do not remember the exact setup he had with upgrade cards that allowed this but nevertheless he put a stress token on my ship in the activation phase before I revealed my dial. When it was my turn to reveal my maneuver I had previously selected a koigan 4 which was a red maneuver. He then said I revealed a red maneuver while stress took my dial and moved my ship into his epic ship. This does not seem right to me because when I chose my maneuver I did not have any stress, but I can see that the rules says when you "reveal a red maneuver while stressed". Was this the correct interpretation of the rules?

If you receive a stress token between placing your dial and revealing it, you still need to have your opponent choose a maneuver for you if you reveal a red maneuver while stressed.

I can't figure out which combination of cards would let him deal a stress with a Conner Net but I know it's possible to get hit with a crit from a Proximity mine that deals a stress. It's also possible to self inflict stress before revealing your dial with Advanced Sensors or Attani Mindlink.

Was a Tactitian involved? Because I don't think Tactitians work with mines/bombs.

You are correct, Tactician does not work with bombs. Bombs are not attacks.

According to my knowledge no such combo exists... (Besides the lucky Proximity Mine crit.)

I'd really like to know what setup this person had and I think it's important for you to check this sort of stuff to make sure the person isn't intentionally or unintentionally cheating.

I believe that FFG has avoided creating any cards that might add stress before revealing dials because it's sort of janky and ridiculously punishing to someone who might have a red move planned on their dial or need to perform a red move to keep their ship on the board, etc.

I agree - there's no provision or special ruling for stress tokens dealt to a ship after it has set its dial but before it activates - so we're forced to go with the ruling we have.

I'm racking my brain as to what specific combination of upgrade cards could achieve this though - the only way I can think of for a Conner net to trigger this would be a shieldless ship which has a Major Hull Breach crit from a previous turn, and receives a Thrust Control Fire crit when it's hit with the Conner

He is a friend and a very honest person we play together all the time so I have no doubt he was trying to cheat me, I was just wondering if the rules were being used correctly.

I trust your judgment. I just really want to know the upgrades in question so we can fix this rules issue.

Ask your friend so we can see it here.

The first thing we tend to assume here is a mistake and not cheating. So while we may question how he did it I don't think any of us are trying to call him a cheater. Just saying that what you reported doesn't actually work.

My guess is a mis-play of Raymus Antilles

He was playing The rebels with the raider so I know Antilles was not involved

The technical answer is that yes, if you receive a stress after the start of the activation phase but before you reveal a red maneuver, your opponent does indeed get to select your maneuver for the round.

As to what combination of game element and effects caused it to actually happen, I'm as curious as everyone else.
