Best way to learn the game!

By cjk1975, in X-Wing

Hey gang. I'm limited on time and have been dabbling into Xwing since day 1 off and on. Now that I'm ready to put some time in it, what would be the best way to learn to play? Would playing on Vassal help? I'm about 45 min to almost an hour a way from my closest local game store. I don't think I need a demo. Rules are pretty straight forward. But I want to learn the advanced rules. I have been watching a ton of YouTube videos and unboxings, learning the termanology and so forth. Just want to take the the best step forward. Any advice will help!

Thanks in advance!

After learning the basics through a Core set it's time to just play. There is not substitute for experience. Build lists, play against as many different people as possible, take notes, and learn from others and your own mistakes.

Play the introductory scenarios with a friend. They are *really* good for getting you used to game concepts.

Vassal is good for getting lots of practice in, but you should have a familiarity with the ships in the game before you use it.

Vassal also has a fairly steep 'set up' learning curve. I was lucky in that Mishary taught me how to play on it and was very patient but i'd hate to go into it with no one to tutor me in how to build and place my units.

Furballs with extra asteroids on the table. Or just regular games with extra asteroids. The extra asteroids do a great job at teaching you your dial.

Revolver with one round in a random each mistake you pull the trigger, does wonders for your concentration...except for Billy but I didn't know about his adhd.

get a friend, sit down, play some games. check rules.
