Quick Storage Question Regarding Pluck Foam

By jbmindtrick, in X-Wing

For those of you that use pluck foam for storage (which I plan to use for small ships-it seems awesome!), do you guys trim it to use on the bottom or top or do you just let it sit on the red foam base on the bottom? Also, do you do cut-outs for different shapes (like putting a little box underneath for the tie fighter cockpit for example)? Just trying to have a plan before I pluck away.

Thanks!

Here's what I use the pluck foam for, just large ships that don't fit as well inside my Plano 1374 case. Using pluck foam for everything would get really pricey. I just lay the ship on top and pluck one cube at a time.

I select foam thickness based on the ship and put only 1 layer of ships per foam tray. They all sit on the base. I have 1", 1.5", 2", 2.5" and 3" trays. The 3" thick ones were needed for the Hound's Tooth and some Armada miniatures.

I don't do anything fancy in terms of shapes. Enough to snuggly fit the model in there. I also pluck whole pieces out.

I reuse the original packaging that the ships came in. Just trim it so it fits on the pluck foam.

I don't for all my ships, just the fragile ones like the X-wing.

A-wings can stand on there engines in a one by two gap.

Just make sure you plan out where all the ships will go before plucking.

What foam did you use btw?? I have battlefoam sword bag standard pluck foam load out, just for reference

I caved and bought the pre-cut foam for the Feldherr case. I have the Feldherr backpack and bought specific foam for my ships.

GamePlus Products 1" x 1" cubes, 7.5" x 13" trays on sale for $8 each through Miniature Market with their standard bag on sale $40. I bought a 2" & 2.5" to test and figure it out. In essence I will be able to get my entire Empire small ship fleet (not on pegs/stands) in one tray & same for rebel and S & V and then big ships (up to 15 ships on each). Bag holds I think like 12.5" inches height so plenty of room.

I use pluck foam for my EPIC ships.

The only non-Epic ship that won't fit in 3700 series tackleboxes that come in the Plano 1374 is the Hound's Tooth.

That was easily remedied by carefully wiggling the back wing until the glue loosened and you could snap the back wings of the HT off and store it in two pieces that slide back together snuggly.

Ghost is probably too big for a 3700 series Plano, though.

While this is true, I don't feel like it's an efficient use of space to store the Deci and HT in the 3700 trays. I'd rather keep those larger, oddly shaped ships in a separate place. I feel like the trays' best use of space is for small ships, bases and dials.

I have a Battle Foam bag and it looks like most of their competitor tray do not fit their bag :(
