A rules question about Cards and Store Championships

By Kasuvari, in X-Wing

I will be attending my first store championship of this season this weekend, and in the list I wanted to run at the event I was hoping to be able to use the C-3PO card that will be given to the first 32 (something I am most certain to be).

My question is: Can I utilize a card in my list that I won't actually have until AFTER I arrive? AND, is there any rules about WHEN the door card is given out? Before the championship starts, or at the end?

I plan on coming prepared with an alternative crew just in case, but what is the general consensus?

Most I've been to hand cards out at the end.

But always, and for many things, when in doubt, call the TO (or in this case beforehand)

Call ahead and ask the venue when they will be giving them out. If they aren't doing it early then I would try to borrow from someone else who you know is attending.

I would think you'd actually have to play some games before you know who the top 32 are. It's not for the first 32 who show up.

It is if the tournament has 32 or fewer participants, which many if not most store champs would.

Depends where you live. Both in central-ish Florida so far have had ~40 players at the start. Some go higher.

I'd see if there's someone who can lend you the card. Most hand it out either at the end or during the first round (when it will go to everyone). I've only been to one that handed it out at the door and that was because they used it as incentive to get people to preregister.

The event was more than likely going to be less than 32, but it makes sense that it would be awarded near the end.

Thanks for the help.

Rules wise, you have to have the card when you start your first game.

But as others have said you can see about getting someone to loan you one, or perhaps the TO could give you one before it starts if there will be enough to go around.

I have an extra C3P0 card. If you're in the US, I am willing to send it along.

I'll say bring a back up, but ask other players or TO to borrow a c3p0 until you get yours.

Also, X-Wing players are generally very good people. Ask someone if you can borrow a 3p0 until they hand them out, and I'm betting you won't have to ask very many folks before someone takes care of you.

The store tournament i went to last weekend had fewer than 32 players when the official start time hit, so they just handed the c-3p0 cards out at the beginning. Everyone involved was gonna get one anyway, so why not?

Lucky for me, because I had a minor family emergency and had to drop out of the tournament early, but still got my card.

You are a good dude...because 3P0 cards are running $25-30 on eBay.

Anyone still trying to that much for them may have a hard time seeing as it is becoming substantially easier to get now.

Apparently the alt art versions are going for that much.

I was shocked when I saw that. How the heck is somehting that 32 people at every store championship are getting going for that much? Especially when there's plenty of people that go to a buncha store championships so they're gonna have a number of copies. It made sense for him to be expensive when he was only available in the Tantive, but compared to any of the other common alt-art cards...

What he said!

Most players are more than willing to help, assuming people actually bring more than just their tourney list worth of stuff.

There are only about 320 store championship tournaments. Which means only around 10,000 alt-art Threepios being given out. Given the likelihood most of those will be kept by the recipient and the utility of the card itself, those kind of asking prices aren't at all surprising.

A lot of people attend more than 1 store championship, and it's not like you can use multiple copies of threepio like you can with gunner, recon specialist or PTL.

Given 320 SCs, how many attend each on average? Our local had 11!!! Figure the one above had 40 and average them, thats 25-26 per SC on average. So 25 x 320 = 9,000 cards handed out!!! 32 x 320 = 10,240 cards total, leaving 1,240 spare cards to be given away elsewhere by the stores.

And Id bet the SC scene doesn't see 9,000 participants! Anybody know of a source to get an idea on how actually partipate in SCs?

I know for a fact from people who attended that two of the Central Florida store championships had over 40 players each.

Warboar in Bromley (uk) has 63 paid entrants for Saturday's store championship..

True, but 2 things...

First prices on Ebay aren't always a good judge of value. What someone asks for something and what someone actually pays for it can be two completely different things.

I mean if I put up a 3PO I can ask $5,000 for it... Doesn't mean anyone will pay it.

Second, the question is in part supply and demand, how many people are selling it, vs how many people want one, but never bought a CR-90.

Warboar actually has 58 paid tickets last time I checked (though space for 64). It's gonna be awesome.
