Awaken the Ents

By Seastan, in Strategy and deck-building

This is meant to be a thematic deck, representing Gandalf, Merry, and Pippin entering Fangorn and awakening the Ents. Even Steward of Gondor does not seem like a thematic concession here, as it is meant to go on Pippin .

You put Steward on Pippin, and you give Gandalf his toys. With the Steward and Staff that's an extra 3 resources a turn, and once Treebeard is out you are generating a total of 7 resources a turn. Coupled with the deck's low starting threat, you can get a massive army of Ents before you have to deal with enemies.

Narya seals the deal. You get to defend with Treebeard, then ready him to defend for 4 twice or defend for 4 and attack for 5, and even more times you you save up some of Treebeard's resources (I never do, as the deck has so much card draw you can always use them). Narya readies a second Ent as well, and I often choose Derndingle who can then defend for 6.

I was thinking of making a video for this one, but wanted to get suggestions for improvement first. Let me know what you think!

I love it, but my current deck is also an Ent deck so I can hardly be unbiased.

I'm always really nervous to play Peace, and Thought. I feel like I should have my heroes be productive in some manner (though Hobbits usually just quest).

Shadowfax is expensive in solo, and limited because it's unique. I'd rather go with 2 Unexpected courage.

Maybe replace peace and thought with the Hammersmith that let's you grab attachments.

The Fast Hitch's make up for the set back of Peace and Thought. The issue with Unexpected Courage is that it is 2 cost spirit and he'd only be able to play it with Gandalf - note the absense of Wizard's Pipe - or with Good Harvest. Shadowfax, while he isn't getting all of the benefits (ranged/sentinel) is 3 cost neutral and can be played on any turn he draws it.

Being able to get an additional use from the Preserver (through Narya) is also a solid option depending on how damaged you are.

Perhaps a copy of Word of Command to hand pick a card from your deck. Actually, the Side Quest Gather Information would likely be better option in most cases. Gives you another way of getting whatever piece you are missing of the combo/setup.

Love it Seastan! I too came up with this lineup for Ents earlier but couldn't quite make it work. But now Narya is such an amazing addition to this deck! It works perfectly for sure. While I like the Faramir Grima Mablung ent deck, this one is just so thematic. By the way, is Wizard Pipe not useful in this deck?

What do you think of removing 1 Narya, 1 Steward and 1 Shadowfax for making space for 3 Word of Command?

EDIT: And also removing 1 QuickBeam and add 1 Ent Draught

I'd worry that without Shadowfax for standing, Word of Command is too high of a cost.

There are still 3 Flame of Anor

Actually, Expert Treasure-Hunter would probably work better than Word of Command and is another option to be considered

I can't believe I overlooked that. If I'm running the Gandalf Hero, Expert Treasure Hunter is just as much an auto-include as is all his other gear.

Expert treasure hunter ''replaces'' the pipe in a way.

As I build more decks, I've moved away from Daeron's Runes. Too often in a tightly tuned deck I cast it, look at my hand and don't want to discard anything. Makes me sad.

Good ideas everyone. I didn't end up using Flame of Anor much, so maybe I will swap them all out for Expert Treasure Hunter. Card draw definitely wasn't lacking though.
